Wilhelm Furtwängler: « Bruckner's Art is timeless; he thought only of eternity and he worked for eternity. This musician is a descendant of the German mystics like Master Eckhart, Jakob Böhme. An artist like Bruckner reminds me of an erratic block of memories from ancient times. Prone to sublime feelings of ecstasy, Bruckner is the heir of all the means of expression of Romanticism at its height: he lived at a time when the universe of sound was dissolving into fragmentary sensations and multiple temptations. In his music, which covers the whole range of human feelings, there is not one single note that does not proclaim an immediate and authentic bond with Eternity. »

Jochum was a giant of Bruckner. Every time I hear him I find something new and extraordinary in his interpretation. He had a deep understanding of music and will never be able to be imitated.

Bruckner is all about the feeling. If the feeling isn't there it isn't Bruckner. It's a feeling of awe, reverence and spiritual magnificence. It comes through brilliantly in these exceptional performances.

@@buckybit Bruckner's works definitely have originality, his symphonies are a profoundly subjective personal expression.
Sure he was influenced heavily by Wagner as where most composers that came after him, Bruckner adored him of course but to my ears he is nowhere near as structurally chromatic, granted his borrowing of Wagner's tremolo in the strings is scattered throughout, but no more than Mahler or Schoenberg. Influence does not undermine originality.

They are am I different kinds of beautiful, aren't they? Like trees in the forest, clouded in the sky, brides flying by or states a million miles high in the cold quiet night. I can't get enough sometimes. One needs this... I love watching an infant, or a toddler stupid to lixten. They know, too.

I can only marvel at the acoustic your team with its remastering achieves. The Concertgebouw is one of the great orchestras of the world, and this release on CMRR with Eugen Jochum, who probably understands the music of Bruckner better than most others, well deserves the accolade of Century's Recording. I thank you for making this avaible to a whole new, younger audience. Magic.

Bruckner’s music is based on those produced by Beethoven or even Wagner, however it presents an originality that does not allow it to be confused, not only for its romanticism but also for the unmistakable harmony. His symphonies are musical masterpieces that touch us deeply in our soul, leading us to moments of divine beauty.
The orchestra and direction are superb and it is perhaps one of the best interpretations I ever heard.
Thanks for this magnificent recording that allows us to enjoy unique moments of pleasure.

I've never been able to "understand" Bruckner's symphonies (i.e., the same way I "understand" the music of Bach or Tchaikovsky, for example), but, even without understanding it, it's something amazing to listen to.
I guess it's even possible that my inability to "understand" it makes it even more goregous, as I never know exactly what is going on and especially what to expect next.

My favorite is 6. This is a great performance of 6, but for my taste he falls into the same trap as most other conductors of 6 do -- during the swells in that wonderful slow movement he speeds up a bit instead of slowing down to intensify the emotional response. Karajan and Haitink interpret that movement somewhat more to my liking, but this is still a terrific performance. I especially like his interpretation of the last movement -- a little faster than others -- and emphasizing the trombones in the last few bars -- WOW! Thanks for this!!

The performance of the Eighth Symphony is not the first version of 1884-1887 which Jochum never performed. He uses the 1890 revision as edited by Nowak.

  • @يزيدبنعبداللهالرشيد

Either you haven't heard of the great Sergiu Celibidache or you got something against him
    There is no other explanation.
He has made the best recordings of both Anton Bruckner and Johannes Brahms + many other composers
He devoted him self for the music he conducted and cared for the experince of the audince more than any other conducter
I would be very happy to see that you have put them on your list in this great channel.
Thank you and you're team for you're existence.

Ordinary pepole intend not to like Sergiu Celibidache because he was never like many other people who performed music he was original and he has a mind of his won and musical ear the ordinary pepole knew nothing about. there are a lot of deatils in his performence and clear lines you will find missing in almost all other recordings. he take time to perform music more than other conducters because it's music and he take it to anthoer lever allowing the composer to express him self and tell the story while the orchestra is there to help the conducter to achive such goals.
It's very comon to be ordinary.

I have a love-hate relationship with Bruckner - which may be appropriate as B himself famously said “They want me to write differently. Certainly I could, but I must not. ...” which to me sounds like he didn’t particularly enjoy writing, rather felt compelled to.
