    I have been doing business with China for the good part of last 30 years, to say that Chinese made junk products is not fair to Chinese people, more accurately, Walmart, Target, K-Mart, all these discount stores, forced Chinese OEM to produce Cheapest possible goods for last 30 years, the owner of these companies become super rich by selling Cheap product they instructed Chinese OEM to make over poor consumers in their own country.

    Chinese economy will not rely on exports forever. At some point they are going to reorient to domestic consumption. Given the good quality of some of their products, Chinese made products are not all junk as they used to be in the 90s. there's good stuff emerging, that means soon it will be the world to want to trade with China because they'll produce stuff nobody else's going to produce. The investment they make in research is way higher than the one in the west (except from the big corps). Why did everyone want to trade with the US after ww2? They were producing stuff nobody else was producing. The same applies here. No wonder the political pressure on China is that big. A shift to the east is coming, wether we like it or not, China is not a rice producing country anymore.

      Um, become a consumption led economy?
      A consumption led economy means a younger demographic that does the actual consuming. Young people buy the houses, the cars, the phones, the music, the shoes for there kids football practice. How can china become a consumption led economy when its age demographics are falling off a cliff. They have already aged beyond viable reproduction, in part due to the one child policy, though all industrialised economies have this issue to an extent.
      Without this demographic china will never have consumption that rivals it's production, meaning it will always be reliant on exporting.

    China has more people than the entire EU, North America (Canada USA Mexico), Australia, South Korea, and Japan combined. So of course China will be growing more and more reliant on the domestic market.
    You need to differentiate the "tradable goods" and "service generated economic activity" Tradable goods are the window where you let wealth to flow in, and domestic service activity is the tool to distribute the wealth based on skill, merit and innovation.
    So in order to have a high income domestic led economy, the country must have high value added tradable or manufactured goods to export. The domestic service industries are the ones supporting and redistributing the wealth earned.
    So the key for China is to move up the economic value chain for manufactured goods.
    On this front, China is doing very well. They've already dominates many sectors of industries, such as the electronics and communication technology market. And we're starting to see emerging Chinese Electric Vehicle brands such as NIO, Xpeng, Li Auto and BYD, that are producing some very good EVs.
    The last piece of the puzzle is the high end semiconductor manufacturing. China right now can produce up to 14nm chips. This is the key point in semiconductor fabrication. as advancement in silicone based semiconductor slows, right now is the perfect opportunity to catch up.

    Demographics. That, and how much you believe in it, is central to whether the drive to boost China's consumer economy will work. That the One Child per Family program is three decades old and has resulted in a shortage of thirty-year-olds, and that people below the age of 48 is where most consumption is done is the critical idea.
    People's spending peaks at 48, then drops off as they save for retirement, while those under 48 are buying houses, raising children etc, all expensive demand creating stuff. The average of in China is near retirement, so in the next decade - so the demographic argument goes - savings useful for investment will get used to support them instead. Consumption will drop because China has far fewer people in the appropriate age range - young people.
    Note that Germany is in the same position, which is why it is an export-driven economy. In the developed world generally we Baby Boomers did not replace ourselves and are now headed into retirement. So the demand will drop worldwide, and both export AND consumption-driven economic growth becomes unworkable.
    So if you believe Demographics is really going to be a dominant force -as opposed to "yes there will be an impact but we can deal with it" - then China depending on becoming a consumer economy is not workable, and the export boom will dry up too.

    • @blazingsun971

      You do make sense. But I would also argue that consumption is not the key to economic growth, production is. GDP is calculated by production, not consumption. Money in an economy is going to end up in someone's hand one way or another, and that ultimately end up becoming capital or consumption.
      people acutally have unlimited wants, meaning if you put money in their hands, they will find a way to spend it.
      What actually would cause the imbalance is when the products does not fit people's desires. Like when China overproduced steel, while people didn't need that much steel. What can happen is that China just produce higher quality and higher priced goods, then people with the money would buy them, then the system would work out.
      China do has huge consumption capacity. Luxry goods consumption had being booming in recent years, as well as foreign traveling spending. The problem is for the supply side to catch up to the shifting consumer demend.

    • @IpSyCo

If that happens company’s go out of business and you’ll most likely see a depression on an unprecedented scale. The only consumer economy set to avoid a demographic collapse in the next few decades is the US, France, and New Zealand. China has managed to piss off all of those countries so exporting to them will not be a viable option.

      @@blazingsun971 well said, agree with you. What many confuse is that wealth is not created by consumption, instead by research and innovation. I try to make it simple. Let's say you're a small country and your industry is made of food, clothing, transport, constructions, and that's pretty much all. Now a real growth is not the increase of demand in the fields nominated above, rather a birth of a new field, like let's say biomedical industry. If a new field is born, it means more jobs are created, more demand for an independent new product, therefore more wealth. If many new fields are born and productivity is increased ( in the sense of, if before you needed 1 person to produce 1 product now you need less than 1) then you can achieve a higher level of wealth with the same work. The key in economic development is not to constantly increase the demand, that's not capitalism, that's just a sick consum-ism. Instead the creation of new branches and increase of productivity, that's what growth means. Imagine, nowadays we can enjoy a level of wealth even the kings of the biggest empires 500years ago could only dream of, that's because we invented things which made our lives easier.

      I think China is lucky enough to grow into a future that experiences an extreme social shift driven by a qualitative surge in technology. With AI and automation, basic resources like food, housing and common goods will be produced with extremely low cost, people's life expectancy will increase enough to redefine social construct. I believe under those extreme changes driven by technology, a totalitarian government like CHina under the correct leadership (if lucky) will have the best chance to transition into the new future.

    On a scientific approach, China's total export amount to only 17% of its GDP on year 2019. This is within ballpark for last few years.
    According to IMF, China's debt ratio is about 50% of its GDP.
    China also waived or rearranged their loans to third world countries for 78 times.
    China also loaned a substantial amount to US, these bonds are sunk cost to China, and is prepared to waive them for better return for China.

    讲得不错,但有一点其实up主自己都没意识到。中国所谓“国企的过度投资”“大规模基建”,不是投资行为,而是政府主导的消费行为,类似于放大了好几倍的凯恩斯主义。中国经济是一艘巨轮,开得慢一点、稳一点,也比崩溃倒下好太多了。

    • @ZGSPG
      @ZGSPG 3 роки тому

      不,是消费的投资部门消费了上游的生产部门,但是最终还是要有最终消费者,比如铺设铁路可以消费钢铁,但是最终还是要靠乘客才能把这个游戏继续玩下去。由于投资周期可能有好几年,所以最终消费和生产部门消费之前只是有个时间差而已,苏联在实行所谓新经济政策时也是这个逻辑。

  • @ericshang7744
    @ericshang7744 3 роки тому

    again, interesting video but I think you have missed the key point to the 'why China economy didn't go into recession in 2020'. the anwser is short, they got the pandemic under control. if it wasn't because China got the virus got control, the increase in export is impossible (because you won't have anything to export at all if all factories are shut down).
    the second point you got confused on the 'reform on provider side' is that, the 'reform of provider side' is not new, it started as early as 2015, and the goal of it not reducing provide capability, but to diversify. which proves working well.
    the 3rd thing you got confused is on the 'dual circulation', this is an more political answer to US' 'de-couple' threat, and smart one. Chinese is trying to use its vast domestic market as a counter measure to the fast changing international market. this policy's true effect is yet to show. ultimately, unexpectedly to many westerners, this will lead to a free exchange of Yuan, and an open capital market.
    in short, Chinese economy didn't go into recession in 2020 is simply because they got pandemic under control, and nothing else.
