  • MatPat, The Game Theorists, and GTLive have been the target of a lot of hate the past week or so. After posting a livestream to GTLive titled "The NEXT UNDERTALE GAME is Here! Heartbound (Game Release)", the creator of Heartbound, Pirate Software, called MatPat out for using Undertale, Deltarune, and Toby Fox in the promotions of his game, and for not linking the game in the description. And, on top of that, a UA-camr by the name of LegalEagle called out MatPat and the Game Theorists for "plagiarizing" his video. And though we could go into that aspect of the controversy as well, at this point it seems very cut and dry that The Game Theorists did nothing of the sort, so we're not even going to give it the time of day. Join your host, Grant, as he breaks down this whole weird week of MatPat controversy and uncovers it all in the Story You Never Knew!

As someone who has hung out with MatPat a number of times and had pretty in-depth discussions with him, I can say my experience has always pointed to him being a solid, genuine dude. He's a brilliant guy with a brilliant team, so when a mistake is made on his end, it weighs heavier than most other channels. People expect MatPat to be on point at all times, but he's human (although he may be part machine, honestly, who knows). This "controversy" will dissipate in time and it's only as powerful as it is right now because people are addicted to outrage, will over-zealously jump to the defense of a perceived underdog, and because MatPat isn't expected to produce any form of human error. Just my thoughts on it.

@@SilverAuron They responded, as anyone would, annoyed because they had spent a long time making a game that MatPat was profiting off and he didn't even bother to do the simple act of linking to the game.
Their responce is rather irrelavant. If he had just linked to the game in the first place there wouldn't be a problem. Yes, he called it the next Undertale, but that's because UA-cam algorithims are shit and the game wasn't well known. Again though, not my point.
MatPat seems incapable of linking to things, either out of malice or incompetance, I don't know, but he clearly can because he did link to the game after a bigger, more well known and respected developer stepped in. When Toby Fox came into call him out, instead of an almost snarky response trying to shift the blame to the people that work for him, he apologised, fixed the title and linked to the game with his tail between his legs. Why couldn't he just do that from the beggining? And his latest video, which is just factually wrong from the beggining, he brieflty mentions the reddit user he effectively ripped the idea from for a few seconds in the video and then that user is never mentioned again and their post isn't linked in the description.
He is effectively just profiting off of other people's work, and it's not like it's difficult to at the very least just stick a link in the description to where you get your information or the game.

I agree especially with the tags since i do this for a living as well. Some games are not known and i don't see the problem with leveraging another games popularity in order to get the game seen. It actually only helps the less known devs and games get more exposure. I think the line is making people believe its not the game you are playing, which like you said is where the issue is but even still i think at the end of the day the game has gotten more exposure which is a good thing.
I also believe you should link games of course but anyone that really wants to play the game can easily just google search the game and get it themselves. If anything its probably more beneficial to link games in the comment section. I don't think mat pat is evil i just think there are a ton of people that don't understand how UA-cam works because they don't do it.

I didn't know about this until now. I'm a longtime MatPat/GameTheory fan that hasn't really jumped on board the livestream bandwagon. All that said, I think your analysis is absolutely right. One thing has to be understood right now, Pirate Software, and all those fairweather fans out there.
MatPat is not your enemy. No one in his team is trying to kick your puppy or make your game perform worse.
Mat's team fucked up, yes. They weren't well-prepared enough to make sure that - IF they want to make sure that the company is credited correctly at all points - that the game was linked, the title wasn't misleading, and that Mat and Steph had the vital info (company name, release date, game name, etc.) on a whiteboard or something where they could instantly reference it.
These were HONEST MISTAKES. MatPat would not maliciously try to use someone for his own gains. He's put too much of his real self out there for me to believe that.
HOWEVER. Everything that Grant said was true on the backend. MatPat and GameTheory don't owe anything to game developers or publishers that don't pay him for his company's services. When he reviews a game on his own, he has every right to do it as he sees fit, and should only be beholden to those game creators and his fans as much as he sees fit. Which, thankfully, he believes is REALLY important. Don't forget that, if you've read this far. I'll say it again:
MATPAT IS NOT OUR ENEMY. HE NEVER HAS BEEN PEOPLE. JFC.

How dare Matpat use good marketing tactics to promote my product!

    • @hyperacc6530
      @hyperacc6530 5 років тому +10

But it's not good marketing tactics for the game itself.
As someone who wants to make a game, that is inspired by undertale, and has elements from undertale, i don't want it to be compared to undertale.
Just because my game has similar concepts, and is inspired by undertale, does not mean it's meant to be another undertale. It is still meant to stand on its own.
Not only is it misleading to compare this to undertale, but by comparing this game to undertale it drives expectations way up.
On one hand It would be flattering to make a game and have it be compared to one of the best selling indie hits in recent history. Especially if you like that game a lot.
But that's where the problem is, is that it's one of the best selling indie games in recent history. Not only that, but it's also an incredibly well crafted game that struck a chord with a ton of people.
When people hear a game called the next Undertale, they're expecting a similar experience that will strike the same chords that undertale struck. When that game cannot deliver upon that, then the game doesn't do as well as it didn't live up to peoples expectations. People expected something as good, if not possibly better than undertale, and when the game didn't make them feel that way they consider the game disappointing.
Which is why Toby Fox himself, the creator of undertale, when talking about deltarune basically says that it's not another undertale. He doesn't want it compared to undertale because as he's said, he can't make something that will make people feel the way undertale made them feel ever again. He doesn't want people to have sky high expectations for deltarune and be disappointed because it's not like undertale.
So it's not good marketing. It would likely hurt the game in all honesty. It's better to let a game stand on it's own merit rather than piggyback off anothers success.
And not to mention, that even some people will then call it a rip off. Which no one would want their game to be called a rip off.
The only way this was good marketing, was for matpats own channel. Because it got him viewers. Which i understand UA-cam is a business after all.
But if we make that argument, we would be defending clickbait. Even if i can see the reason to clickbait, and make justifications, its still a shady business practice either way.
And finally, if matpat was doing all he could to promote the product. If he really liked it that much, and really thought this game needed more attention then why didn't he simply link the fucking game in the description?
Yes he's not obligated to do so, but if you want to try your hardest to promote a game and give the game attention, you would at the very least link people to it.

Sure the clickbait title is kinda cheap but in the end it worked for both of them. Mat had more people tuning in to his stream, while Pirate Software got a lot of attention from people who might be interested in the game because they like Undertale.
I'm sorry if this came out as rude to anyone, but honestly you guys (haters) are just jumping in on every opportunities you get to hate on MatPat and making it so that he was the bad guys. So here are MatPat's sins:
    1) clickbait
    2) discredit
    3) no download link
    4) getting defensive (until Toby contacts him)
Now let's look at how sinful they are, under the circumstances.
    1) almost everybody on UA-cam uses clickbait. Go look at that Watermelon Movies movie trailers. As annoying as it is, clickbait is still harmless.
    2) discrediting is a serious issue. However, I'm pretty sure the credits were in the game, which was being played in the video. So technically credit was there
    3) download link. I personally never thought that was a necessity. If you know the name of the game, you can Google it to find the download link yourself.
    4) I agree that's petty. But he said he'd revise it even before Toby stepped in, so who cares?
Everyone's acting like he did some permanent damage to an indie developer. Like...no. It's a UA-cam Livestream that's giving an indie game some attention. If I had a penny for every UA-camr that committed those four 'sins,' and nobody bats an eye at them, Bill Gates would ask me for a loan.

5:50 They wanted to get the game more exposure. So they stirred up drama to get publicity
Let's be real here, even with the screw up, he was doing them a favor overall. He still got the game's actual title (which is more important if the dev isn't well know) correct.
He then proceeded to fix the company name in the title, yet they STILL complain about private tags, which as you said HELP the game get attention.
I do not like MattPatt overall (although this makes me reconsider), but he is absolutely in the right here.

Given that it actively benefits them, I think it’s safe to assume they didn’t understand why the tags were there, and would be annoying because they just had to tell him to fix their name in his video.
It’s like you come home from work and whoever you live with was supposed to have cleaned, they took a while but finally got it done, you open the closet to put your coat away, and all the trash flies into your face.

Thanks for this! I hadn't even heard of Heartbound until this whole controversy blew up (and now that I've seen a bit of it, I don't have much interest. The devs acting like the next iteration of early-access is a "full game" doesn't bode well) but I know that people have a long history of attacking MatPat over things that, really, shouldn't be that big of a deal. I think it's simply a case of something (GT, specifically) being popular, and it being "cool" to hate on popular things.
Take the whole Undertale debacle. MatPat made that now infamous "is Sans Ness?" video a while back which proposed a fun, if pretty unlikely idea that Sans was the undead, time-shifted version of Ness from a different universe. Personally, I thought the connections were interesting and the video itself was entertaining. But the amount of hatred the video garnered baffles me _to this day!_ I mean, MatPat gets things wrong, a lot (just watch his video on For Honor, for reference) but so what? He churns out huge amounts of content every week for entertainment purposes, of course he's going to make mistakes.
Then there was all that business with giving Undertale to the pope. A bit silly, sure, but hardly what I'd consider reason to fucking _riot._ But now that Toby Fox himself is taking pot shots at MatPat for doing something that literally 90% of the YT content creators are effectively _forced_ to do thanks to YT's shitty algorithms? That was hugely unnecessary. I get that Toby probably dislikes his game being used as clickbait, but that's too fucking bad for him! He made a popular video game, people are going to capitalize on that popularity! He can fucking cry about it into his piles of money for all I care.
This whole "controversy" is a non-issue being blown out of proportion. It's a bunch of whiney game devs taking shots at a big UA-camr because of a bunch of semantic bullshit. MatPat's video did nothing but earn Heartbound more popularity, which it sorely needed. But instead of saying "thanks for featuring our game on your livestream" the developers decided to kick up a big stink because MatPat got their name wrong and they think GT's viewing audience is too dumb to use google.
Is clickbait deceptive? Sure. But that's not a problem with MatPat, it's a problem with _UA-cam._ MatPat uses clickbait for the same reason thousands of content creators use it; they pretty much _have to._ You want to get pissy about clickbait, get pissy at UA-cam, not the poor schmucks being forced to use it just to stay afloat.

Like simply list the things they weren’t satisfied with and to fix, and knowing mattpat, he would graciously fix them? Why did they have to make a tweet about it when it could’ve been rectified privately? I’m not saying Matt was in the right, clearly he wasn’t if it made the creator upset. I just feel like it wasn’t that necessary to openly call him out like that. Now if Matt was a dick and refused to do as they asked, oh sure call him out! @@hamsamech8399I'm also kinda just looking back at this stuff, so you're not the only one.
Tbh, I think it's more the opposite. It feels more like there was a bit too much ego from the game dev than anything.
The only actual point that really made sense in the initial callout was the slight clickbait (wasn't even the malicious kind either). The other points made felt like extremely minor issues at best and non-issues at worst (the tags in the description and the link to the steam page especially). The tags really didn't matter (as it was for SEO purposes to help boost the game's reach against YT's algorithms) and demanding a game link feels absurd when it's a paid steam game with an easily searchable/rememberable name like Heartbound (spreading the name itself is really all that is needed since it's simple enough).
The whole getting compared to Undertale and Toby Fox thing as well. That would've ended up happening with or without Matpat given the similar designs and how much of Heartbound was inspired by Undertale and Earthbound. So, the callout just ends up feeling unnecessary and a bit ego driven. Toby enabling it didn't really help at all either.
Kinda a shame really, as I was really looking forward to the Early Access updates back then, but this unnecessary "controversy" really ruined my love and anticipation for the game.

They are using controversy to promote an unfinished game, they are named too closely to a phrase like "Pirating games" for me (which i think is why MatPat made the mistake), they snapped at MatPat for some pretty minor issues when you factor it was a LIVE show and they posted a link in the chat.
They were WAY to harsh on MatPat for a live-video if this was one of his NORMAL theory videos THEN I understand their reaction more, but it wasn't MatPat didn't edit, he didn't need to do hours of research, he just played a game and said the wrong thing.

Since MatPat wants to treat his chanel like a business. He is going to face the wrath of a messup like a business. Had he apologized and promptly fixed the issue, none of this would have gotten as out of,hand as it did. Instead MatPat blamed those managing the channel (his fault for improper training and he is the boss...), and deflected the issue right up until Toby called him out on it. If they ask me to link it in the description, I can CHOOSE whether to do so or not because they are NOT sponsoring me (if they are, then that's a different story). If they make a big deal out of me not doing it, I'm never showing off the product again 'cause the last thing I want is drama. Me showing off the product is me doing you a PRACTICAL & ETHICAL FAVOR for you doing me no PRACTICAL favors (since I paid you; that was all). An eye for the 2 eyes I'm already giving you. Once again, I already paid you. That was all. It was not a requirement that came with buying said product. If that were the case, everyone would be linking every piece of their gaming rigs in the description for just using/talking a bit about it. It would be an illogical thing. But that's my take on the matter.

@@KorgCrimson It would also be a different story if it was FREE. Then, it would be that person giving me 2 eyes (the ethical gaming experience AND with no practical benefit to them). As a result, showing their work off and linking it would only be fair.

Yes but it also makes yourself look bad when it’s petty to this extent. And the fact they mad over something that isn’t even a full game is even worse
