- Video of the large 6ft 3D Zoetrope in building 5 "Get Animated" exhibit at the California State Fair in Sacramento. The Get Animated exhibit is produced by Troy Carlson of Stage 9. I made the mechanics, motor controls, music controls, lighting & strobe electronics. My Friend Manny Baca did all the character animations. The music is Alphabet Boogie by Gene Michael Productions. This Zoetrope was at the California State Fair thru Aug 1, 2010. It is currently on tour around the US and Canada.
This Zoetrope has moved to Museum of Science & History
1025 Museum Circle
Jacksonville, FL 32207
It is amazing to see it live!
The disk spins at about 60rpm (1 revolution per second) and the strobes flash 15 times each revolution or ~ 15 flashes per second. I set my camera to record at 15 frames per second (frame averaging) and the camera syncs on the strobes pretty well. Many phone cams use 15fps as standard so they can get a reasonable image but most handy cames are at 30fps so most of the frames will appear black.
You got all the classics: The Simpsons, Mr. Bill, Gumby, Pink Panther, and the oldest toon, of all, Felix the Cat!
I even saw Mr Bill!
I even had a Mr. Bill t-shirt! LOL!
I'm almost 8 years late on this but I just recently got into the history of the tropes, animation, and photography. It's extremely fascinating.
i just discovered 3d zoetropes and idk how i didnt see it before. Nice
12 years late, but I think these are great. We are talking about the history of film in my media class and the textbook mentioned one of these so I had to see for myself. Wasn't disappointed 😁
3D Zoetropes are amazing and I never get tired of them. This zoetrope is still on nearly continuous travel and display. We updated it's electronics a few years ago.
You could just stare at that all day. There is just so much happening! 😀👍 Infact so complex.
How does this not have over a million views?
Bcus it is edit. Should show how it really is
@@benjaminstephen97it's not an edit, watch other videos
I know it's a funny thing to concentrate on, but man, the way it looks like Bart Simpson keeps skateboarding around Homer at the bottom of the zoetrope always makes me smile...😊❤
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.. AND THE MUSIC IS A FANTASTIC ACCOMPANIMENT
THANK YOU FOR SHARING
Потрясающе! Впечатлилась! Спасибо, что показали. Музыка-это что-то!
This zoetrope will be at the California State Fair in Sacramento July 12-28, 2024. You should see it live, it's amazing!
This is oddly adorable
Absolutely mesmerizing. With the computer-design and 3D printing now available, you guys should consider taking commissions for more of these.

“Incredible work of art!”
The other 50%:
“But that beat, tho!”
Cash on cash out made me come back to watch how all this is made 🔥
Mr. Bill! Nice deep cut.
Oddly effective and appropriate music selection.
The original motor was a 3/4 HP AC motor with Cap start. There was a limited slip clutch plate after the gear reduction. We changed the motor to a 2HP DC motor with motor controller. We elimitated the slip plate.
It was nice to see a couple of characters from my childhood, pink panther and Mr. Bill
A true work of art, even when it's not spinning !
I used a Sony HD 3CCD camera and was filming at 1080i. This camera has the capability of changing the shutter rate to 15 frames per second. The strobe rate is very near to this rate so the camera can sync on most of the frames.
I am not sure why your comment was removed?
Excellent creativity, the background music is superb.
very beautiful
Amazing work
Its not that loud. If you listen carefully you can hear the low rumbling of the spinning table under the music soundtrack. The sound was recorded with a standard hand held video camera which picked up the sound from the speakers along with all other ambient sound. You hear a 1hp electric motor driving the 6ft platter with a 40Hp gear reducer. The platter rests on 6 large roller blade wheels to take most of the weight of the platform.
That’s really cool! Thanks for sharing!
I had a question if this was real... Yes this is a video of the actual Zoetrope that was running at the state Fair. Seeing it in person is actually much better! This Zoetrope is currently in Redding at the Turtle Bay Exploration park
How fast does it spin and what kind of camera do you use?
This Zoetrope is moving to the Comic-Con museum in San Diego in Feb 2023
I've just watched Pharell's latest music video and it's freakin sick to be seeing this concept now! 🔥🔥🔥
It's my first time seeing one of these I had to do my research after watching that Pharrell video
@@KJ_Jizzle Same hey, it's crazy to think that this video is from 2010!
I like this video because it's actually using the strobe. I don't mind the occasional flashes.
The wheel is spinning at 60rpm. The strobes stop the action so you can see it. (15 flashes per second 1/1000 flash duration) I syncronized the camera shutter speed to the strobes to take the video.
Can we see it with a naked eye?
@@fattydoo7848 yes, you can see it live, it's amazing to see
¡¡Impresionante mix de personajes, un enorme trabajo!!! Saludos desde Argentina.
Now imagine that each individual movement goes off into it's own parallel dimension.......
Not everyone knows who Mr. Bill is. Great addition.
The BEST I’ve ever seen
The number of figures you use depends on the strobe rate The Pixar zoetrope uses 18 as the standstill strobe rate. I use 15 strobes per second as the standstill rate so it is easily filmed by a phone camera.
Yes it is ok to use part if this video
It's back at the fair 2024!
That's a whole lot of fun.
The voice actor at the beginning is Bill Farmer, the voice of Disney's Goofy.
Very well done!
I love zoetropes. Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful, fascinating
Lighting Effect Change The Art ❤❤❤
I love the Mister Bill reference...LOL Great video.
Why would you say that... You need to see it in person. The concept of 3D animation is amazing.
I never knew such a thing existed until now
Why did I get this 13 years later?
Wonderful cast of characters. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
I hope it won first place!!!
What RPM does this spin at? Also, does the effect rely on a strobe light or a particular framerate on the camera?
Yes. I just saw this in another video. Have you found it yet?
this will work although most record players only turn at 45rpm max. You should try an LED style strobe. The standard xenon flash tube party strobes are very insense, hard to look at, and do not have a fast flash rate. I used a record player to make a zoetrope that has 12 lego characters and I modified a party strobe so it would flash at 20% of its normal intensity but at a higher flash rate. I have used this for teaching in classrooms and it worked well.
I'm glad these didn't exist 50 years ago when I was an LSD enthusiast. I might be twiddling my thumbs in a cave somewhere.
Stunning.
13 years late, I'm 56 and understand how they work but I still question myself every time lol.
Obviously the work of intoxicated alien pranksters.
No normal human would attempt such a thing even if it were possible
I remember seeing this going to the fair it was awesome
Hi Sean those are posable off the shelf models. They were purchased by stage 9 in Sacramento
Wow omg amazing really amazing video
Who would downvote this?! Super cool! Looks like a kooky animation. Amazing.
So impressive & enjoyable
What an interesting video!
*THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLY 100% AWESOME!*
*Thank you!*
Daft Punk - Arround the World fits as a music for this video no doubt
You sir are a Garden!
The animation effect requires distinct "frames" to work. Otherwise, it will just be a blur. Using a camera with an appropriate frame rate is one way to do it. If you want to see it in real life without a camera, you could instead use a strobe light with a suitable flash frequency.
Awesome, Amazing 😮😮👍👍
great! I like it 😃
Amazing!
Blur is usually caused by the strobe "on time". Depending upon the diameter and speed of your zoetrope you will need about 1/1000 sec "on time". What are you using for a strobe.
This is fantastic!
@DrGaryAden I appreciate your reply. I second guessed myself after I asked the question. I then I removed my own post. For that you're owed an apology.
I want one of this machine how collection, is cool 😉👍🏻
Our childhood in a nutshell.
Top gemacht 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This Zoetrope is currently at the New York Hall Of Science...

Is it me, or can I hear Bill Farmer's voice at the beginning? This is so cool to watch, though.
Yes, it was Bill Farmer doing the voice over
Gary Aden I thought I recognised Goofy’s voice.
how fast does it need to spin for the effect to happen ? ..... this is incredible !!
Is this what you see with the naked eye or is it something with like it’s matching the camera speed, like how an airplane propeller looks still sometimes?
This is what you see with your own eyes.
Did this come before or after the Toy Story zoetrope that used to be in Disneyland? I know a zoetrope isn’t that new of an idea, but the similarities between the animation movements of these two are SO similar. Buzz light year is on a ball and aliens are jumping into a hole. There are videos of it too.
This is Zoetrope was made later
That was bad Ass !
@DrGaryAden I appreciate your reply. I felt bad after I second guessed myself.
Incredible! Is this actually ''real''?.... or like a cartoon? -if done by strobes, not sure exactly how it works, but looks amazing.
Yes its real, I saw a explanation of how it works by Kevin (the person who invents them) and it actually makes sence.
Superb
INCREIBLE MARAVILLOSO GRACIAS
Now i understand the op of mob psycho
and I’m still wondering how these things work
Anyone remember bart vs the world nintendo game? You had to ride the skateboard on the great wall of china hard af lol.
Flat Earth Candy : Tripping Fractal Clues : Awesome Wedding Cake Build : Live Action Olympic Open &c - The way this works has so many applications. EDIT ADD: I bet using it in tandem with lenticular lensing would be a great 2.0 version More snell window version in 3.0- thanks for the share- ive never seen these less the original w the horse and such
So much work and patience!!!
And very interesting music. Can I have a link to this song?
The song Alphabet Boogie was bought from Gene Micheal productions for commercial use.
@@DrGaryAden Thank you !!!
Awesome!
I used to have a site with pictures and schematics of the entire machine but I didn't want to keep paying for it. Sorry.
Gary Aden LOL...can simply upload an archive to dropbox and post a link. That is free.
Thanks for having posted them. As said before, you could upload them again to Dropbox or Google Drive, or others better solutions. Thanks in advance!
How can you find said schematics?
Gary Aden Felix and Gumby are my favorite!
Hi Mr. Gary
I want to make one like this, but there are lots of blur.
I can't see the figures clearly.
Can you tell me how can I fix the blur problem?
thank you
You need a strobe light or anylight that 'blinks' extremely fast to the human eye, something that interrupts the flow of movement enough for your eye to be tricked in joining 'frames' (with missing images) together. If you look up a classic zoetrope, you can see the images are partly blocked by a screen with cut out squares to create the sameish effect of animation.
FASCINANTE!
Our brains and eyes are great!
o vídeo é de 13 anos atrás, da a sensação que esse vídeo foi gerado por inteligência artificial
Where did the idea come from? Did you see other sculptural zoetropes? I'd like to know more!
Amazing!!
I need to know how big is your platform and how much weight you are spinning. A large 6ft zoetrope used a 3HP motor while a small 2ft zoetrope would use a 1/4 HP motor
What if you slowed it down increased the size and added more figures of the same size, and later made a lemniscut of flexible pathway rotating and twisting thru pullys
The illusion of motion has to be at a specific speed to match what our eyes will see, otherwise the objects do not appear to "move" right. Also making it too large could make some figures animations look clunky on the outer edge.
Hope that helps! ☺
