We wanna hear your thoughts on the button situation: are solid-state buttons the way to go (assuming they're done well)? Or is it a gimmick no one wants?
People are _sleeping_ on this phone. Beautiful design and an HTC always feels better in the hand than it comes across via UA-cam. No bloatware just a super fast no BS solid feel well constructed industrial feel phone.
3 days until delivery for me here! Had my old Legendary HTC One M7 for over 5 years as a Daily Driver! Nothing have replaced it! Im expecting the same with the new U12+....
Watching on my Asus Zenpad - But with my Legendary 5 Year old Daily Driver: HTC One M7 by my side charging! - Waiting for the order of my new HTC U12+ !!!
Same here 😁 Someone stole my 10 at an amusement park last month, so I got an s8 and just felt dirty. Returned that pos, soon as the sketchy eBay deal was complete and I had a new 10 in hand. STILL one of the best phone out there, far as I'm concerned. And I still got my M7 from 2013 as my alarm clock! Love these pocket tanks, long live HTC
I think this is my top 5 phone of the year. The design itself is gorgeous to me, one of the most beautiful phone I've seen so far. I think users of the phone should adapt and get use to those buttons.
The Tech Animation Studio yeah, I honestly can't judge before trying the phone. I've seen all over the internet that the phone's 'buttons' are very bad. But, I really can't judge before trying. I might never try this phone forever as there's no store here that has HTC phones here.
Alvin Z I've had my U12+ for two days now I haven't had a single issue with the buttons, they really do feel like an actual click too. This phone is impressively fast and the cameras are stunning.
David hunsinger thanks for the info. God, if I haven't got my XZ2 yet, I would've suffer from headache just because I can't pick between them. How do the buttons work with a case?
Got my U12 today. I don't know if HTC already fixed the buttons but I can long press on the volume up and down buttons to do what I want. Also I can take screenshots by holding down the power button and tapping the home button on the screen just like l used to do with regular physical buttons. No problem with the buttons.
Same here...my buttons are fine...there's a short learning curve sure but you'd think these geeks that mess with devices all day, every day would be aces at it but it looks like they are kinda slow to new, refined features.
Reviewers don't tell you they like, full brightness, notifications on, Bluetooth on, Location on, IG, FB, YT, SnapChat, E-Mail, calling, texting, Waze or GMaps, Gaming, reviewers are hard on their phones.
The orientation lock got me excited! It baffles me that no OEM has even thought bout this. Truly lifesaver. (I say this lying in bed, while my phone keeps asking me with it's auto rotate. Lol) But no physical buttons is kind of a deal breaker. Hopefully they iron that out. Or better, Google adopts the orientation thing with the pixel 3! Win!
DK baller oneplus has also such a feature with their latest if i'm not mistaken. They do it via the front camera though and the position of your face. HTC has a track record of implementing things that makes you say why isn't everyone doing this: stereo front facing speakers, a tweeter woofer combination via the earpiece speaker etc
This screen rotate lock is genious...the feature i was looking forward to the most!...oh, the buttons are fine...some people nitpick over menial things.
I own a OnePlus 5t it doesn't have any such thing... Have heard the same about the OP6. The issue with HTC for me is it's availability... Like how you guys said these reviewers complain over menial things, the issue is there is no way for me to check it out in hand.
The U12+ is an awesome device...Powerful and feature packed, even by die-hard HTC loyalist standards, but I'm not too hip on its large size, nor those haptic volume and power buttons... I like the solid and reliable feel of those sturdy mechanical buttons, with the ridged edges on the power button, all on my smaller HTC 10... My little handset is still a beast after almost two years, and I'm going to stretch it out for as long as I can...
I'm sure someone has mentioned it already...just slide the other dock over and tap to take a screenshot or screen record! It couldn't be easier. The side buttons work fine for me, it takes a bit to adjust to a more refined approach. Just because it's new doesn't mean they are bad or should get bad review. They work! They are just different and it takes a bit to learn that's all...but they work fine.
I didn't expect that rotate feature seriously come. I am really glad HTC did it but this I need in my HTC 10 will I get that feature through update... (sorry for bad English)
No notch, yay! Really bummed that this isn't sold in stores, I really want to try one out before purchasing. Incidentally, Android Authority, please talk about speakers/audio when reviewing phones. This phone is supposed to have some of the best speakers and audio recording on the market, thanks!
ironshark123 I just don't see any inovation done by htc, desing is a (bad)copy of LG, software is meh, cameras are meh, buttons are "removed", srceen is ok, price is way too high. This phone should be priced like oneplus 6, that way it would make some sense. And if you want to squeeze something get a girlfriend.
ILIJA1993 You don't see any innovation from HTC, wow.HTC made first android smartphone. All others are in the market because of htc.also, first metal phone, first usb type c earphones, first dual camera(m8) etc.
Rishabh dev Tyagi I knew most of that, but in the last couple of years there is no inovation. HTC used to be soo great, but now they are boring and jus "meh". Nothing to get you excited about their phone.
ILIJA1993 edge sense, dxomark 103 which is higher than s9 plus(99) and iPhone x(97), usb type c earphones. Now there is a news around that apple could copy their squeeze feature(pressure sensitive feedback). That's enough innovation for me to be excited.
I think there is a point is pretty spetial but no one knows. The edge of front side glass mounts 90 degree into the metal frame. Even S9/S9+ doesn't have that kind of front glass. But this makes U12+ cost more because it's hard to manufacture.
You made no mention about the other key features such as Speakers, zoom sound recording, benchmark speeds etc.. some of the other reviewers are stating camera is 1.7 aperture where as you mentioned 1.8? I hope HTC can fix the button sensitivity issue via an update as there is a software update due in couple of weeks.
Thibault Sargnac, for me squeezing the phone on my htc u11 is the most convenient way to take a screenshot, super fast and edge sense works great. Never had a problem with it what so ever, and my phone is 2 weeks short of one year old. Still as zippy as when I first bought it and I have 100 plus apps on my phone. The u11 for the price now is a much better buy than the one plus 6
3 hours screen on time is the real deal breaker. I'm used to 8hrs on the S8+ and S9+, P20 Pro and even 7 on the pixel 2 and 2 XL. Glad HTC messed up my order. I honestly believe this is HTC's last phone, and that's a shame as I used to like them.
Think about how accurate your touchscreen is. You can live with the same imperfections in the HTC U12 plus sensory. There is a lot of untapped creativity with this phone.
Screen on time isn't the best indicator of battery prowess. Everyday use process better. LCD panel will obviously give you underwhelming results on screen time!
Please someone tells me: Why according to most reviewers this phone is reasonable priced for what it offers but LG G7 which is cheaper and better is too expensive ????
I've pretty much always had an HTC and tbh it's getting a lil boring 😂😂 sense hasn't changed that much and I wanna try a new phone. I love my U11 and it's still great but I want something different, it's time for a change 🤗
crossingdown_thestreet No. I hate Samsung's UI and EVERYONE has a Samsung, and if they don't, they have an iPhone 😂😂 I've just never really liked Samsungs
3 hrs of battery that's it? My HTC 10 was a getting close to 22 hrs when I first got it. I was seriously going to look at one of these tomorrow. I can't do 3 hours of battery. That's not even worth the upgrade. I'm going on a 7 hour trip Monday. I need the phone to allow me to stream Netflix and listen to music. Wow
Watching this from my HTC U ultra the floppy phone all I can say about this phone is running like new and waiting on my HTC U12PLUS tralucent blue 128GB to be shipped 😆
"In 2018, all manufacturers are trying to find something different and unique to stand out from their competitors." Can we be more specific here? In my 2018, all phones are made of glass with notches and double cameras, and I'm desperate to find an alternative.
tolstoydreamcastfan You've got a point, although BlackBerry have always played their own game. But I mean, even LG has given up on trying something different. 2018 is possibly the worst year for choosing a smartphone if you dislike one single of the current trends. There are no alternatives. Even keeping a headphone jak port is praised as daring these days.
So, let me see. Larger bezels than a 2017 budget phone, no top 3 camera, LCD panel, no boom sound (not true boom sound, atleast), no headphone jack, the buttons work poorly, the battery life is the worst of any flagship in the last 3 or 4 years, costs 850 dollars whilst being manufactured by a brand that lost all it had going for it with the m7 and just froze in time, looks like a LG phone, and so on. The m7 was my favorite phone of all time, this HTC is just slowly bleeding out. No one in their right mind will buy this phone when just about everything else is cheaper and better or the same price and better. The u12 and the g7 are the only flagships I would not take over a OnePlus 6 at this time, and that costs 1/3 less. I have had flagships from every brand and I think brand loyalty is ridiculous. Come on HTC, gimmicks for the sake of gimmicks. Just make a beasty phone that everyone likes. You already have a great camera, just give us a massive battery, headphone jack and smaller bezels. And get your marketing right too

Top of the year The Best, Samsung Note 8 , S9+ , HTC U12, Huawei P20 pro, Huawei mate 10 pro RS , iPhone X ,One plus 6, LG G7 , Pixel 2 XL ,Asus Zenfone 5 Z 👌.
306 to 389 nits bright enough???? That squared screen...U12+ is not beautiful from front at all. HTC is constantly 1 year behind competition in design. What's wrong with HTC, to offer such expensive but unfinished product.
We wanna hear your thoughts on the button situation: are solid-state buttons the way to go (assuming they're done well)? Or is it a gimmick no one wants?
I think it is a great idea! The more solid state the better.
You seriously should stop this guy from doing reviews !!
If they aren't done right it's a deal breaker... Physical clicky buttons sound way more comfortable. Hopefully they correct that next time round.
But that screen lock thing just won me over.. hopefully Google can do that with the Pixel 3. So it's either that or HTC with buttons done right.
Stephen Jenkins solid state buttons are HORRIBLE for things like sounds or on off buttons. What are you talking about!!
People are _sleeping_ on this phone. Beautiful design and an HTC always feels better in the hand than it comes across via UA-cam. No bloatware just a super fast no BS solid feel well constructed industrial feel phone.
Funny, there are even sponsered ads in u12+'s software. I wonder if that is BS

Very surprised that he said U12+ only can achieve 3~4 hours of SOT. I'm using U11+, and managed to get SOT from 5~7 hours of SOT.
HTC rocks !*** software update fixed problems.
Thank you HTC.

This phone really stands out. But in a good way. This , is innovation apple. Too bad most people will skip this phone like most htc flagships
Red-Haired Shanks This is even less inovation than Apple. Only the price is in the same category - overpriced.

Yea that is certainly questionable...I'm getting 6 hrs sot easy with 25% left and on for almost 12 hrs.
The pressure sensitive buttons are more of a gimmick. The battery exhausts quickly just because of all the pressure sensors.
Think about how accurate your touchscreen is. You can live with the same imperfections in the HTC U12 plus sensory. There is a lot of untapped creativity with this phone.
