I am starting to make small prints for now, but eventually want to build some helmets, and ultimately, a life size R2D2. I like your approach here, very easy to understand, and straight forward. Remember to use either .28 or .32 for your layer height, you'll get better results that way due to the magic numbers. It's really not magic, just Math! Great work, keep it up!
While honeycomb is a good infill, it takes much longer to print than grid or triangular infill. All the nozzle direction changes add up. Run a comparison and you'll see the difference. Also if you have tall supports on a print, use direction angle changes of 0-45-90-neg 45 for them. They will built more strength for the same amount of plastic and have a far greater chance of surviving at lower support infills.
This video would have been real handy about 8 hours ago, before I started to print the arm of my phase 1 clone trooper armor. It ended up fitting just barely, but I'll definitely keep all of this in mind for my future prints.

Great vid. I have a lot of your files and I just picked up your Animated ARC Trooper file for a few projects. I've never tried a helmet print with a 5% infill though. It might be time to try. I never use the supports on the dome interior...yet in the visor area I always do.
I am new to 3D printing and it would be nice if you would do a tutorial on how to do this is cura because they have the same things but with different terms and it is a little confusing.
Why don't you use the split level pro ring function ? For doing the top layer of a print, you can set the infill finer so the top has more support. I do it that way, putting it down to 4mm .

I am running into an error issue in Cura with my Hunter helmet (the complete file.) stating that it is unable to slice due to not fitting within the build volume/Are assigned to an enabled extruder/Are not set as modifier meshes... I'd assume my CR -10 VR 2's build plate capacity is too small -_-, Also, How does one set the combing/retraction modes for such pieces? I have selected within infill as the combing mode... But can't seem to minimize the travel strings from showing up on the preview..
Could you go over what you do for the neck portion? You covered the brow to make sure it fits, but what about making sure you can get your head through the helmet. My first clone helmet I scaled it up to 105% and cut a hole in the bottom, but now my helmet is decently large with a big neck hole. Any tips?

I was thinking of attempting to make a Commander Gree (the camoed guy who tried to get the drop on Yoda during ROTS on Kashyyyk). Would this be a good helmet base, or is there another one that would be a better match?
Any reason you couldn't flip the front and the back of the helmet upside, so that the flat cut part lies on the bed? Seems like you'd save a fair bit of material avoiding some supports. Just a thought!

Personally, I'd print only the first layer of that brim for sizing, so that it only prints for a few dozen minutes rather than hours, saves filament too.

Just a question with limiting factors, I can't really find any detailed articles/pages/information about it. Does it apply to all your helmets and 3D printed helmets in general? I'll try my best to answer some of your questions to the extent that I am able to. His channel was created in June of 2012 but his first video is from approximately 3 years ago. He hasn't had it as a full time job for very long, though. He has a variety of different models when it comes to the printers, and several of each. To my understanding, most are some type of CR-10 printer, so he has certainly spent a few thousand euros at least. However, they pay for themselves. He obviously doesn't buy more printers than he uses or can afford, the sales pay off the printers and then he makes a profit. As for storing all the finished helmets in his videos, I really don't know. I'm sure he keeps them on display in different places or in some sort of storage space... Hope this answered a few of your questions decently, as there is no guarantee that he will have the time to :)

Keep in mind once you add in the visor, fans, voice boxes, batteries, foam and various other bits and bobs the helmets get pretty heavy and hot. You could try it with infill, but you would just be increasing your print time and wasting filament. If you wanted, you could also do a few layers of fibreglass inside which would add stability and a bit of weight.

Something like the fiberglass would be the best option since im looking to make it as more of a display piece, wich feels more real and high quality when picking it up every now and then. What I thought about was maybe pouring some epoxy into some of the empty spaces on the inside. Or perhaps the in between the outer and inner wall incase there is the space for that.
@@JG-xm9bu You would never be able to fill it between the infill, but yes you could coat the inside with epoxy. If you are doing a prop helmet my suggestion is to look for a model that has the proper bottom on it. The original clones had very small neck openings (as they were just digital). This model has a large opening which is not very accurate. Then, what I would suggest is filling the inside with stuff that looks like it would be in a real helmet. For example... i.pinimg.com/originals/17/8b/bf/178bbfdd2f214040454d1b6abe0b8c7c.jpg Then you can add weight into those components where you like.

Pretty much all of these settings can be DIRECTLY applied to Cura or PrusaSlicer. Just look for the settings he's talking about. When it comes to placing supports manually, Cura can do it with a plugin called "Cylindric Custom Support".
You should do some different eras of Star Wars because you do an amazing job. Keep up the great work!

I know it's way too late to actually be of use, but generally helmets seem to be a minimum of a couple kilos.

But if I want to print my armor out of PETG, I can't split it because it's difficult to find an adhesive that can glue the pieces together, isn't it ?

Have you tried using tree supports? I really like to use them to support round shapes, because it costs less plastic and requires less finishing.
tree supports takes more time to print then normal one

I understand the idea of placing the parts the way you did, but why not print the front part face up? Won’t it make the visible parts better detailed?
