I few comments on various topics discussed. Sorry, long comment!
    1. In regards to Jim, he did say he would move back to the US in great parts for his wife, saying in his couple it was time to shift the focus over to her, so he did show interest in running WSER next year (maybe w the Nice golden ticket, depending on his recovery).
    2. In terms of coverage, I agree that some sort of categorization of sections would be helpful for most of us, and it would help to create a narrative for the coverage. One thing that disappointed me in the bottom screen graphics was that only the top 3 were shown, I think it should be extended at least to top 5, if not 10. But yea, their baseline is pretty solid.
    3. In regards to age, a few comments. Ludo finished 5th at 48 years old. Frigging amazing. And in terms of longevity, François and Kilian show it can be done. But when you look at the human potential in sports, 29 is usually the peak. I think the reason why currently the peak in ultra trail running is higher is because no one starts an ultra runner, or even a trail runner. The 29 y.o. peak is attained in sports like hockey, soccer, etc. where the combination of experience and physical abilities go hand in hand. Messi started playing soccer as a toddler. Kilian is perhaps one of the only case in this sport where a young child started endurance training at a young age, and we have the expected result. Obviously he has great innate abilities, but the nurture aspect is as much a factor I believe.
    4. Finally, Courtney. I think the saddest part in all of this is that in the end-of-year retrospectives, she will probably only mentioned in our sport's publications. I find it extremely hard to believe that any mainstream publications will mention her in their top athletes/performances of the year. 1st at Bandera (6th overall). 1st at Transgrancanaria (7th overall). 1st at WSER (6th overall). 1st at Hardrock (4th overall). 1st at UTMB (25th overall). Just incredible.

I would imagine with Jim's mentality that if he's trying to get a golden ticket this early it's not because he wants to win, because we all know he can win but because he wants to put down a time that can't be touched. Like a signed, sealed, delivered, put a nail in the coffin type of message on Western states. Also, probably wants to race Peterman and Hawks because they will probably be hungry coming off of injuries

Why top 10? Why not top 12, 15 or 20 or 25? Every other running race sport - you get top pack and only 3 podium get big coverage. So why are we expanding it to top 10? Make more people happy they are covered? I have never understood it. And for women - who is gonna beat Courtney? She has no close competition so past 2-3 closest to her - who cares?.
    Love the commentary.

@@runsingletrack I wonder how much it costs for all media coverage as well. It’s a hard race for everyone. Everyone (minus people who buy there way in) worked hard to get there. It’s no disrespect to others. It’s just a reality as others have said - top 3-5 most interesting or a storyline.

Loved the breakdown! The speculation about Courtney racing Leadville is interesting. But i think it's going to be tough to keep her out of Chamonix that time of year.. But i could see Jim in WSER then making a project out of two of the most famous Colorado trail course records: Matt Carpenter's Leadville & Pikes Peak.

Towards the end of the livestream of female commentator was making comments towards oh I don't know that there hadn't been equal time and she seemed kind of bummed about it and then they changed the male commentator at the same time it was kind of interesting I wonder if it has anything to do with some of just sort of uber Macho French attitude

  • @Sunnydaypicnic

Does equal coverage make sense if more people are following the males? Male athletes make more money because more people watch male sport(on most sports) . I am all for equality but not overly forced.

I would like to see coverage based on action and storylines - it doesn’t really matter if it’s men, women, front of pack, back of pack. Take me to action and take me to storylines. Either way agree no one’s tuning in to see cheeseboards.

Tbh I am more keen on watching the men as there are so much more competive not to say the women arent amazing but its just not competevie enough what I want is to see more women being about to compete with courtny its kinda of like f1 at the moment where Max is winning all the time. Also there may of been other men with them and they may of just wanted shots of just the women instead of the men. Would of been really crowded at the start at least at the end there was more coverage of the femals.

I would give 100%. Outside of the Courtney Slam story line, the rest of the race was not intriguing or compelling. Everyone racing for 2nd place and not even being close. At least there was some movement at the end between the podium. The top three women were all impressive
Everyone can stand on their soap box and talk about “equality” but the number of people watching Live for the 5-10 place female finishers is incredibly low. The numbers don’t lie

I watched UTMB for the women's race and caught the men's coverage as a byproduct. If they want to get more eyeballs on their event to maximize sponsorship value they need to offer better women's race coverage.

    • @runsingletrack
      @runsingletrack  Рік тому +1

Yeah! Maybe you agree, there have been many races where I'd even say the women's race was more exciting than the men's too!

    • @williamdesemple9960

The Live stream viewership would tell you otherwise. Once top men are finished viewership drops off substantially. Once Courtney finished very few people were watching for finishers 4-10 women despite the coverage. Crowds were 1/1000 the size at the finish as well.
People were watching for the Courtney slam. The rest of the woman’s race was not compelling.

@@williamdesemple9960 - when you put the focus on the promoting the stories of the men's event and provide coverage focusing on the men's event it's not shocking that the men's event is what attracts attention. It's a chicken and egg situation. We treat the women poorly and then we use that to prove we should treat women poorly in the future. There are lots of compelling stories to be told on the women's side if we care to look for them and tell them.
