Exactly, Joe is literally predatory: Taking out the competition, observing his prey compulsively and he will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants. The only redeemable quality he has is truly caring for Paco and yet that doesn't take the fact he is a sociopath not a psychopath since psychopaths inflict pain out of sheer pleasure.
D & K it’s mostly because of how interesting his character is and how we sort of feel bad for him because of how much he loves Beck even though she continues cheating on him. Let’s not forget that this a movie not real life of course.

I don't know about wanting them to be together, but I believe the reasons people root for Joe are his inner monologue in which he constantly lies to himself/the viewer about what he truly is (a sociopathic amateur murderer/stalker) and his upbringing that the show gives you brief glimpses of and you begin to realize why Joe's so fucked up which makes the average viewer hold out hope that he can be changed by the woman he "loves." (Every character's also a bit dumb so maybe they would rather them die for entertainment?)
.......that and this generation has a weird obsession with murderers, almost to the point of giving them celebrity status.
D & K that’s the part about the show, you realize how messed up Joe is it “Will” in season 2 and you are mad at him but also feel for him and can’t help but root for him even through how messed up he is.
Elizabeth is perfect.

I'm a calm person, but after Joe killed Beck, I never watched the series again. I felt a hatred that I've probably never felt before, even though I knew it was a movie. I wanted to hit Joe hard. I experienced a frightening feeling of hatred (congratulations to the actors), but I felt an anger I'd never felt in my real life. "How could this bastard kill an angel???" I had an irrational reaction I'd never experienced before. It even scared me, but I never watched "You" again.
