The old Dundee siren had a lot of open space. The center was solid, but there was a lot of screens in the bottom and top sections, all the way around the siren. I believe that it must of had two vertical rotors at 16/16, as it was really high-pitched.

Interestingly, the largest town in Oregon with a working siren is probably Pendleton, which has a 1950's SD-10 that sounds daily at noon because the people wanted to keep it, even though it isn't used for anything else anymore. Ontario has a Sterling M-5, but I've never heard it used. There is also a diaphone in La Grande, most likely unused. All larger inland Oregon towns have long since removed their Cold War sirens (except Albany, which has an unused Hedberg-style siren).

Most Sterling sirens still in use are the horizontal "bench grinder" M- and Y-series sirens and the "Little Giant" models, but other models like the 2V8 were horizontal. Sterling is now known as Sentry, and all their models are now vertically-mounted. On this one, as in the current Sentry 3V8, the rotor is on the bottom. There are many sirens of this type throughout Oregon, but most of them have a flat top instead of a cone. One even has three Thunderbolt-like projector horns attached to it.

When I was a child in Dundee, Michigan, the township FD had a very nice Sterling siren, which was a vertical model, just like the Federal Model 5, but looked like a round can, with no hoods. Also, that siren was SOOOOO loud that when you walked down the street, you had to cover your ears.

Sunriver has a system of several Modulators for evacuation purposes, primarily forest fire or volcanic activity.

I was there about a month ago and I heard an SD-10 (or perhaps a 5T) go off at noon in the direction of downtown.

The type of signal is different in each location. On most of the coast, the tsunami warning is a steady "alert" signal, and this is also true of most tornado sirens in the Midwest, but some areas use a wavering "attack" tone. Flood sirens are fairly rare in Oregon except near dams, such as in Ashland.

There are several sirens like this one in Oregon, but only this one has the pointed cap. My guess is that it was added on later. All the others look like a paint can with the ports around the bottom edge.

cool! at that traffic light you take a right and before head up the mountain to senica, you take a left and head up the canyon for about 1 mile, which is where i sometimes go to in the summer to visit family. great place!

If you have those at the beach, you must live in Waldport. Until a couple of years ago, there were two sirens on the roof of Hillsboro's old city hall building. One was a Model 5 and the other was an ancient vertical Denver Siren. There was also a Model 5 in Gresham on the old fire station. All are gone now. The only siren remaining in the Portland area is a 1930's Sterling on an old fire station in West Linn. Thank the State of Oregon for dismantling Civil Defense back in 1963.

There is one Sterling M5 in Silverton, but it isn't modern. It is about 80 years old.

It all depends on where you live. Coastal towns need tsunami sirens. Towns on a river like the Willamette or the Umpqua (i.e. Roseburg, also with one ancient, unused Sterling) could use flood sirens, but desert towns like Burns or mountain towns like Enterprise have no need of them. Perhaps wildfire sirens?

Dude it’s for fire. Wildfires spread fast in John Day area. Very dry in the summer, and can be very gusty.

That's definitely a siren, but I thought a Sterling was more horizontal in design.

There is no way that any poison gas from Umatilla could fly 150 miles against prevailing winds and harm anyone in John Day. The siren was used mainly for calling volunteer firemen. Nearly every small town had a fire siren at one time.

Not right on the beach, but not far from it. The siren in that video was about a block from the water.

@kcd4204 Did you ever wonder why the Japanese or the Germans would want to bomb little towns like John Day? Nearly all schools built during WWII had rooms designated as bomb shelters, and most school buildings in Oregon had air raid sirens (usually Federal Model A sirens) in the halls. Some still do, but they are now used as fire alarms. I don't know if it is still used, but there is a large Sterling siren on a pole in front of Mount Vernon High School.

Who knows? lol I think it is because we are on a direct path to Umatilla where there was a depot that did hold many warfare weapons. I think it was more of a precaution than anything.

N617A They were built locally in Oregon City for their civil defense system, and I believe there were about ten made. They were removed in the 1960's after Oregon abandoned its Civil Defense system and later sold to fire departments. I have seen them in the following Oregon towns: John Day, Camas Valley, Brownsville, Imbler (removed), Canyonville, Tangent (with horns added), Gardner, Gervais (removed), and Rickreall. There might also be one in La Center, Washington.
