- Check out this incredibly insightful shot progression from a scene in Walt Disney"s "Frozen by the talented Character Design Artist & Character Animator, Bobby Pontillas! After the movie opened in the U.S. on Nov. 22, "Frozen" went on to become the top-grossing animated film of all time!
"An animation breakdown of one of my favorite moments I was fortunate enough to animate on Frozen!"
"I don"t usually shoot video reference extensively (clearly) , but we were on an accelerated schedule so I had to work very efficiently and had one week for this. I poured my soul into it and with the guidance of my supes, somehow it got done!"

As an animation student, let me tell you that it becomes exhausted to hear the same sound sequence over and over again as you work
Those motions were crazy, that actor has interesting skills.
He was the animator of Anna.
Really shows how the animator is the hidden actor
Nice reference!! Great actor!!
poll
I listened to the same segment of the song 3 times and I'm already irritated.
I can't possibly imagine what hell the animators went through. Especially with all of the other songs that are in this film
you get used to it tbh
Well for the movement they surely have just muted the song, or even didn't had it. But the mouth animators, yeah real heal
"I can't possibly imagine what hell the animators went through. Especially with all of the other songs that are in this film "
Then imagine, what hell the sound engineers/sound designers went through
I was in Sound engineering school, and one of our term assignments was to mix 30-minutes long live recording from a concert, during which they were singing a patriotic songs.
Imagine sitting for, idk, 48-72 hours in total, listening to those same songs over and over again.
It was hell...After few hours, I was starting to feel like I was going crazy
My feeling, when i finished this assignment, was like that: "F*CK YEAH, FINALLY!!!"
Props to the dude pretending to be a like 5 yr old princess
You know, I bet the amount of repetition necessary to produce a shot would drive most non-animators crazy.
Seeing a grown buff black man act like a child is my favorite pastime
Bobby Pontillas is a fantastic animator -.- One day I want to get where he is now.

Thanks for sharing! Well done Bobby, you always keep producing quality shots ;)
i guess Im randomly asking but does any of you know of a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot my password. I love any help you can give me.
@Ezra Rhett instablaster =)
@Xavier Andres Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Xavier Andres It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my ass :D
@Ezra Rhett you are welcome :)
Awesome! This is the process I usually do when animating in 3D, I never knew they did that in Pixar as well.
It's Disney not Pixar, but these days it's almost the same.
anna was a black guy
Accely almost any Disney character was a balck guy(I saw more like this)lol
Said the white pony princess ~~
This gives me racist vibes
Damn
Guess there's still confusion as to how an animator works. An animator first gets the workbook scene, which has the layout, timing/dialogue sheets and dialogue track.
They listen to the track over and over and over. From that they'll act out the scene in several ways, Do thumbnails to show to the director. (Or in cg-block out a scene digitally)
Some times they will indeed shoot video footage of THEMSELVES acting out a scene but often times not.
Once the thumbnails or blocking is approved by the director they move forward with the polishing and followthrough work.
There is no 'other' actor involved. Although sometimes the voice actors are videotaped as their doing their voice work. But the animator RARELY uses this.
I know I never did. ;)
animators dont get paid alot
dany dongslayer
Uh.....Actually animators get paid a hell of a lot.. But the industry is very very unstable at the moment.
@@riddlr6358 Well not that much in fact, they mostly overwork themselves and are paid like they are doing normal hours. But they can renogatiate their salary every 6 months, at the end of their mission (very few long imployment in this field)
@@goblinraph
naw. They get paid pretty damn well. Yeah it's a ton of work...and yeah the hours are long. But you know that going in. So theres usually not a lot of whining about it especially when the pay is pretty good.
As for 're-negotiating' every 6 months.
That's sounds pretty alien to me.
Never heard of anything like that in film OR tv. As most productions hire for duration of film/project.
As for the long term employment...yeah. IT's been that way sadly for awhile now.
Unless you work in story.
Alot of animation people try and do double duty. So that employment is more stable. But stability in animation industry has ALWAYYS been an issue.
@@riddlr6358 I said every 6 months but that's if your mission was for 6 months (sorry for my english, i'm french), if it's longer you wait until the end of the mission.
Idk about USA, but in France, they get paid at first 1500€, which is only a little more than the minimum salary per month, and they get paid 35h per week when most of them do 72h per week. So yes it's not that much.
The reason why animators aren't complaining is bc they were warned about that, bc they do the job they always wanted to do (most of them, some wanted to do other things than animate (charadesign etc) but it's only for when you are very experienced in a company) and bc they can take holidays when their mission end if they want to. And also bc a some of them aren't from the country they are living in.
And also I guess bc in some country their salary is considered high? I guess it's the case in the USA but again in France it's considered pretty low, not poor but yeah, low.
The video reference... I just can't.
Anna lifts
Great Work Progression
Just awesome. such a cute shot you made.
I love finding these
please share more of these breakdowns :)
this was entertaining!
The beginning kills me
for your next video do let it go! how Elsa makes her ice castle and dress, singing let it go, and that stuff
Animation student here. It looks funny from the outside, but when you're actually working on the animation, it gets really annoying to listen and watch the same thing over and over again aishanss
Layout anmation
Anna: OMGAWD HI WALL
Elsa: ANNA U SUPIDZ
this is great :D
How much time does it take to animate a short scene like this? How many frames per day, how many passes? Wondering how fast I need to be to be able to work in a professional environment.
Kelsey W I'd imagine it can differ by a lot. I don't think you should worry about how fast you work as much as you communicate with your team.
Got any more Frozen breakdowns?

I can't stop laughing
Cool Animation with reference, Like 455, why dislikes.....?
I think the door knock was the intro of the music
WWF💜
that...was some bad ass acting.
+SVAFnemesis He has to exaggerate the movement, so the animator can replicate it. There's a big chance the "actor" in this video is the animator himself, or a colleague.
Always watchin' o_o You’re right. The actor is the animator.
Do people still do the layout stage?
Layout is still incredibly important in animation so yes, they still do the layout stage.
This Guy - Young Anna
they use rough animation for her dress to bend but then cloth so the cloth pushes on it
0:18 I don't know I did I laugh..
How do they make the graphics HD? Like, how do they make the animation go from looking like 0:52 to 1:14 ?
Textures, lighting, and a whole lot of post prosessing not to mention simulations such as hair/fur and cloth.
Ah. Thank you!
*****
And shaders, lots and lots of shaders.
dam
how do u make
I've got to try harder...
mantap bang
wow i just watched it and it was pretty short
0:28
0:50
1:12
This is actually hard xd
hahahahahahah!!!!
Yurvk
Dålig i början men när Anna kom så vart det bättre
Dålig
A it just me or is it weird for a man to play a girl part?
Umm...wow. You'd think they'd use some sort of female actor to rehearse the movements rather than some random dude.
its not a random dude, its the animator, he is the actor and deserves all the credit
Well, regardless...I can't watch this scene anymore without imagining a grown man doing these moves. Makes me snicker a little.
he's not the animator and whatever who is the actor, the animator just see the mouvement on the body
TheNacho Draw
Actually, the animator does rehearse the movements themselves so he/she and his/her team know how to animate the scene.
TheNacho Draw you think they contract an actor to plan every scene in an animation movie? it's the animator's job.
