It’s a real joy to work with. Having moved to this for many many things, it comes with some piano sounds and some thu audio effects. For not to much money you can really get a lot of mileage out of a few vsts. The work flow feels so effortless that it’s worth the transition, even if you are moving away from “included” sounds that come with other softwares
When you say "live performance" are you referring to two or more musicians playing/recording remotely together? I've tried Audio Movers and with a ton of effort, it drives me crazy. Thanks for the video, liked and subbed ✅

Hi Brett ... thanks for a very helpful video. I am in the market for a midi keyboard controller. I am probably looking for 61 keys and since I am not an experienced keyboard player, semi-weighted or even synth action keys will be fine for me. Do you know of a keyboard controller whose knobs, faders, etc. work well with Gig Performer? Thanks.
Hey Reynald! The answer depends on the situation! Ableton has a better capacity for spontaneity and performing other non-music functions such as running backing tracks or controlling lights. If I am playing a gig where many elements are unplanned and in the moment, I prefer Ableton. If I am triggering backing tracks I also use Ableton. GP3 shines in handling song specific tasks. So if I am performing something that is largely rehearsed, GP3 is the go to. They also have an option for certain parameters to ignore patch changes, so for example, I can program out synth layers for different sections of a song, but leave my pianos to be manually controlled. Hope this helps. Do you use Ableton or GP3 or mainstage? Or another?
@@LiveKeyboardist checkout the new Camelot Pro. Much easier to deal with and understand than Gig Performer. Works on iOS as well. After seeing your video, Mainstage still tops it as the included instruments in Mainstage are not found in GP. That’s a huge difference - especially for the price difference between the two.
@@jptaylor I think MS is a great place for people to start, and many stay with it for a very long time (it was 10 years for me), and for very large / complex concerts (i.e musical theatre). I am much more concerned these days about setup, performance, and playability for set-based live playing. GP meets all of these for ME better than any of the others, and I have tried them all. I stopped using the logic instruments quite a while ago, so the built-in instruments were no longer a factor. I still run MainStage occasionally as an external instrument from Gig Performer as I have some sampled instruments that I haven't ported over to Kontakt yet. I have also had Camelot Pro since I was a beta tester for before it was released. Couldn't use it live initially since they didn't support effects until a later version. I do still use it on iOS occasionally, but the whole approach doesn't work for me on the desktop, except when I am running hardware synths...the mapping makes it super easy to control both software and hardware without a lot of complicated setup. I always suggest people try multiple hosts, since the workflow is very different between them, and to me is critical to it being usable for each individual.
How does this compare to Cantabile in terms of live performance with a band? I'm thinking of getting this if has easier workflow and better functionality. Thanks
Thanks. I'm inundated with too much info. I'm doing a solo act live. I Have an apollo quad with thousands in plugins. I play guitar, vocals, have a looper, drum mach, piano, and play my backing tracks through a DJ Console. I need to route signals from guitar vocals to looper and out again to FOH. Guess what I'm asking, can this be my digital mixer?
I must have been living under a Rock. I’ve never heard of gig performer. I was just about to pull the trigger on buying a Yamaha MODX, but I think I’ll give this gig performer a go, seeing as I’m heavily invested in the VSTi world of instruments. Great video tnx.
It is more of an investment than mainstage for sure, but I think trumps it stability wise. There is also an argument to be made with working mostly with third party VSTs from a flexibility standpoint - You aren't tied to any program. Something else noteworthy is that you are able to code your own functionality in GP3 if you find something is missing. Worth taking a look - they offer a free trial. I used Mainstage for years, and eventually pushed it too hard and found it crashing at the worst times. Made the move mostly over to Ableton - in some situations Ableton is needed, but GP3 has surprised me time and time again with the way it functions, with stability, and with hidden extra gems.
@@LiveKeyboardist I’ve used demo version I agree with comments but 90% of most musicians won’t push mainstage I’ve never had it crash in a live situation I only use a few additional plugins Horses for courses 😎❤️
I'm a GP3 owner and (very inexperienced) user, and a huge fan, but let's be honest - $150 is "slightly" more costly than $30? Really? "Slightly?" Must be nice to be so well off. LOL Not a deep criticism, guy, I'm a fan of yours as well. Just became a sub.
Great review Brett. Got me thinking of Gig Performer simply from a stability standpoint. Quick question though... In Mainstage, i normally run an ambient pad (like a drone) in the background; in the key of the song that I'm playing in. It could be a Wav file in key of C or something. Can Gig Performer do that?
Thanks! Yes, Gig performer can definitely do that. It's got an audio player built-in, so you could have your drones loaded in with buttons to trigger them in a similar fashion to MS.
This software would be perfect if you could program midi tempo mapping and backing tracks with song setlist mode or at least sync it with a DAW. I still couldn't find a way to send clock from reaper to it... I play in a band which plays to tracks live and I want to sync LFOs, delays, arpeggiators and all that kind of stuff to that.
Hey Fabio! It for sure supports incoming time information from ableton link. Looking into the other features you requested. It has song mode as well, and will run tracks, but not with the same flexibility Ableton will. As far as I can tell, with link working it should be able to sync your delays and apes and such. Also, each indivial song or rackspace can have its own tempo set, which should be sufficient if you aren’t changing time mid song.
Hey Fabio - I did some digging, and I've got some more clear answers for you. 1)You can receive click information from Reaper! But in order to do that, you must enable the "Sync with external clock" from within the rackspace. Additionally each "song part" can have it's own time, so if you are changing time sigs or tempos, you can account for that. 2) For running tracks- If you decide to do it in GP, you will want to create a second instance containing only your tracks. No time stretching is supported as of yet though. You can do this from the advanced options. Check the multi instance support button. Please let me know if you need further help!
@@cuccomposer Happy to help! I've got a video that explains how to sync time using Ableton Link coming out on Tuesday. One to follow shortly after using non-link enabled software. Let me know how you progress!

$150 is asking too much for what it does. Logic Pro is $50 shy and offers a whole lot more in Sounds, Plug-ins and workflow.
True! But it's also not designed for live performance. Logic would of course be the win for Recording and producing.
