I do the knot after the half of the free braid already. Then the braid is folding itself, while I pull it through and thus I spare half of its length. You also can braid back the thin end of the braid into the previous part to cut some length - nobody will look at it later. 🤣Actually I never braid the French part already behind the forehead, but sure, this is also a good way to store braid length.
