One of my most treasured pieces of music. Incomprehensible to me how this masterpiece - possibly the finest music Schumann ever wrote - is so unknown and unappreciated. The story is very powerful emotionally, and the music is simply magnificent. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. WOW! Perhaps in our age, people have become just too jaded and satiated with materialism to grasp its deep spiritual currents. This performance is really off the hook: perfect. Robert is with the angels himself just for writing this, if for nothing else.
You're right: way too jaded. The noisy crap culture. I'm sorry to say I know nothing of this work, but I love Robert Schumann, via Jan Swafford's excellent bio of Brahms. Such a profoundly sad figure. I love that he wept all night on learning of Schubert's death. Who wouldn't have, though? The sensibilities of 19th Century people were far more intense than ours today, I think.
Schumann's 'The Paradise and the Peri' is exquisitely joyful to listen. Phenomenal solo singers and outstanding choral group, they are pure beauty in vocal expression. This Oratorio is so graceful, spellbinding musical melody and soothing 'Fantasy' to the spirit. Awesome performance! (2 years ago)

'Das Paradies und die Peri' is Schumann's colossal musical achievement. It is a secular oratorio for soloists, choir, and orchestra. This work - perhaps more than any other - established Schumann's international reputation. The composer creates a musical drama focus around the Persian Mythological story of the Peri. The Peri a creature from Persian mythology, is the focus of the tale, having been expelled from Paradise and trying to regain entrance by giving the gift that is most dear to heaven. Eventually, the peri is admitted after bringing a tear from the cheek of a repentant old sinner who has seen a child praying. (Wikipedia.) In the drama, under the influence of Persian literature, Thomas Moore poetic work indicates the conflict between good and evil prevalent in Persian mythology. The chorus and the soloist achieved the story in the play in pristine and grandiose voices. Mr Klaus Peter Kraa establishes Schumann as a composer of great dramatic choral works. The soloist, the choir, the orchestra and the conductor give a divinely inspire rendition! Thank you for sharing a magnificent literary work combined in a lovely romantic musical theme. In addition, the recording is supreme.
I was living in Berlin in the USArmy circa 1976 in the old SS Academy. Schuman and Dvorak were my favorites. I was drunk with Port wine most of the time but I was still the best at what I did in my service.Listening to this for the first time in 40 years. However I have been to HEA VEN thanks to Lux Aeterna by Mortem Lauredsen.
I agree with you fully. I was shocked when i found this extraordinarily magnificent music. It's unique both in Schumann's catalog and in Western music. and unfortunate it's not performed MUCH more often. I think there's a bit of a bias against him; or a mindset that Schumann is not one of the truly major composers. This piece certainly disproves that, and thus upsets some of those conventions of classical music.
¿Profano?
Under the influence of Persian literature, Th. Moore’s composed book-length poem Lalla Rookh (1817) [Persian: Tulip-face]. In the second tale, “Paradise and the Peri,” [Persian: Pardis and fairy] the Peri, as a fallen angel seeking entry into heaven, must perform a good deed, which she does by saving a boy from a pederast. Using Moore’s poem as the basis, the German composer R. Schumann (1810-1856) composed an oratorio for soloist, choir, and orchestra entitled Das Paradies und die Peri ‘The Paradise and the Peri,’ which he considered to be his “most important work in every sense of the word”
“O heil’ge Tränen inn’ger Reue” 1:16:52 I learned to love this piece by this excerpt. I really do not know the meaning of this yet, but sound like angels singing inside me, one of the deepest sounds I have ever heard. "O heil'ge Tränen inn'ger Reue, In eurer sanften Sühnungsflut Die einzige, die erste neue Schuldlose Lust für Schuld'ge ruht!"
What a difference with the version led by Hartmut Haenchen! Herreweghe's tempi are completely out of order, too fast here, too slow there, breaking the fluency of the piece. Even the stunning Julia Kleiter can't overcome it.
APESAR DESTE ORATÓRIO PROFANO POSSUIR TRECHOS DE BELAS MÚSICAS, SCHUMANN NÃO CONVENCE COMO COMPOSITOR DE MÚSICA DE OBRAS PARA SOLISTAS E CORAL. SEUS TALENTOS SÃO MAIS BEM SUCEDIDOS COMO COMPOSITOR DE OBRAS PARA PIANO, SUAS QUATRO SINFONIAS, OS CONCERTOS PARA PIANO, CONCERTO PARA VIOLONCELO E SEUS LIEDERS.

Couldn't agree with you more! One of Schmann's finest pieces!!!
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE. One for the ages, one for Paradise.
Sehnsucht und Traurigkeit wunderbar interpretiert
Love Robert Schumann. A phantastic man.
Thank you Schumann, thank you Philippe Herreweghe and thank you all the performers for this wonderful experience!
The beauty of this melody and her and his singing voices is irreplaceable , and paramount
This is such beautiful music. 🥂

@Quinn Will flixportal =)
@Arthur Jamal Thanks, signed up and it seems to work :) I appreciate it !
@Quinn Will you are welcome :)
Pure beauty! Aside with the same composers Scenes from Goethes Faust this piece is among the works I would take with me to a desolate island.
Such a beautiful mezzo-soprano. Wonderful!
Great piece of music!
really not. inglotta and bad high notes: the best on palce is Julia Kleiter- Oh wait ! Did you mean her ? I bet.
Brava Julia Kleiter! wonderful singer.
Eine großartige Aufführung dieses Meisterwerks! Herausragende Sänger!

Schumann is a genius
Heavenly work.
Choir, solists, orchestra - BRAVO!

One of the most beautyful moments in musical history: 1:22:22
Thanks VERY MUCH !
Los Angeles Philharmonic performed it in June-2018.
An absolute Masterpiece, Completely Neglected.
The most tragic of all composers - but the most passionate - to understand the music - you must know the man and how he suffered.
Other tragic great composers= SCHUBERT, TCHAIKOWSKY, SMETANA, MAHLER, WEBERN.

Großartig.
Bellísima música, magnífica interpretación.
Lovely, thanks !
29:15 I think a certain big-headed buddy of Schumann's might've been listening to this part very closely...
exellente muy bonyta!!!!!!!!
No.8 at 17:08 is the best part of this oratorio

Herrlich!
53:28
The performance is superb, I just dislike the exaggerated vibrato of tenor Maximilian Schmitt, what a shame.

Non
Mozart
so I'm not the only one who hears Wolfgang in this...
Schumann
@@jessesouzapianist and a bit Mendelssohn...but no Mozart.
No, absolutely not. Mendelssohn and Bach of course (somehow Bach is everywhere). This is so much better than Mozart.
Schumann's vast sense of self-importance was inversely proportional to his complete lack of humor
?

Sadly.... Herreweghe does a cold reading of this thick, velvety and profound score! alas... the Frankfurt audience look as bored as I am hearing this.
