RE Ukraine - Hope this helps, I tried to keep it short and simple (I've written this at a high level to get to the point, there's a lot more detail ofc):
After WW2, international rules said: "Don't change borders by force." Despite this, Russia took Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, pointing to its Russian-speaking majority as a reason.
In 1994, Ukraine gave up its huge nuclear weapons stash, expecting safety from attacks. This was promised in the Budapest Memorandum, and yes, even Russia was part of that agreement.
Then, Eastern Ukraine saw fighting between pro-Russian groups and Ukrainian forces. By 2019, Ukrainians wanted change and picked a new face, Volodymyr Zelensky, as president (West leaning and politically green).
In 2022, Russia (more specifically, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin - and it's worth noting not all Russian's are in support of this war; approximately 1 million have left Russia) shocked everyone by attacking Ukraine. Most of the world said, "This is wrong." The US, EU, and 141 other countries supported Ukraine. Because of the attack, Finland, a country that didn’t want to pick sides before, joined NATO. Sweden are soon to follow.
I've got friends and co-workers from Ukraine and Poland who had to run from this mess. They're safe in Poland now. The big lesson? Countries should respect each other's space and not attack.
The US and EU are in a tricky spot. With Russia acting tough, there's a lot at risk. They're helping Ukraine because it's the right thing to do and to prevent more trouble in other nearby countries.
When you say, "We don't support anything," think about what that really means for peace and friends around the world. It's a big deal to know right from wrong in this horrible situation; war is horrendous; a very tender and sad topic :(.
