There's good dive bars and bad dive bars a good dive bar is a local place that has good food and drinks but isn't known to many people and it's kind of old and run down a bit then there's other diet bars that are just dirty and nasty. I guess we also call good dive bars "A holes n the wall" I'll use it in a sentence for you.
I like that "hole in the wall they have good food & pour heavy drinks, let's go there. 😂😂

one of the issues with carding Great Grandpa on June 6th, the day he and his boy landed in France, is because some computer systems will not let the server run a drink order through or a cashier process an alcohol sale without swiping that pesky ID through the magnetic reader first.
As for open late, I heard that in some parts of New York City, the bars only have to close down for 1 hour a night. That is just what I heard.
Keep up the good work and you are looking lovely today!

"Dive bar" is sort of a minor slight. It implies poor lighting, limited liquor selections, and a generally run-down state and doesn't usually serve food (though it can- Hole in The Wall in Austin was a marvelous dive bar that had great, greasy fried food). But I'd sooner go to a dive bar than a sports bar any day.

Agreed, "dive bar" used to be an insult but now it's more of a description of the atmosphere: inexpensive and without pretentions to hipness or class. Dive bars have become respected enough in the US that there are now fake dive bars - bars that try to look cheaper and more lowbrow than they really are.

Carding is often done as safety measure for the owners. Various authorities send their spies into the bars to buy alcohol or cigarettes to check if they’re selling to underage customers, then hit the place with a fine.

I once worked in a grocery store that sold beer and wine. There were signs all over the back room which read, "You Can GO TO JAIL!!!" Then it explained in smaller print that if a cashier sold alcohol to an underage person, they would actually be arrested.

It's definitely a legal matter when it comes to beer festivals. I've gone to a couple of them, and they check the IDs on everyone, more because they don't want some jerk making a big deal and saying, "You checked my ID but you didn't check his!" even though I'm 62 and look it. So they check everyone. If Betty White showed up, they'd check her ID. Not because they think she's under 21, but because if you check one, you should check 'em all.

The corner place a 2 block stumble home from my apartment policy is to card you until you have been there enough for the barkeep to know your order and bring your first round from memory, simply to avoid the fine for underage sale. A few months back someone was standing just outside the patio talking with friends for a few hours when I got there; then literally hurdled over the gate at midnight while everyone yelled out Happy 21st birthday! It WOULD have been a proud moment in his life but he tripped and instead laughed for a good 20 minutes while we all bought his first legal drinks all night😁

Also I tip almost every round and I never really got a free drink because of it. I normally only get a free drink if the bar is being generous and that's usually if I am regular enough to be there.

When I was younger the local corner bars were typically called "taprooms" by the old guys, and they all had a separate entrance on the side of the building called the "Ladies Door". These had official signage and everything identifying them as such. Apparently unattended ladies were not to use the front doors as it would appear unseemly :-)

We sometimes do rounds, but it was more common in college when we had 20+ bars in 2 blocks to choose from so we would only do 1 drink at each bar. Someone would pick up that round, we'd drink it and move on to the next bar. Some tabs are done on the honor system and some bars put you card into their system so they can charge you when you close your tab. Many will hold the card so you don't forget to close the tab at the end of the night. Some bars have signs up that say if you forget to close your tab, they'll close your tab with 40% tip added on and you can pick up your card the next day.

To me a "dive bar" is usually not kept up as well. Such as broken stools, floor not swept, some lights may be out... That being said they may also be the best spot on a bad night. (Sometimes with a ride service, before Uber and the like.) All of this is from the "before time".
Years ago I had to go back to the bar is was in the previous night and ask the barkeep if i had spent $100. He said yes. I was very happy, i thought i had lost $100 somewhere.
As always thank you for the entertainment. Stay safe. Take care. 😎

It'll be a requirement on your next visit: whoever meets up with you or knows the city you're headed to has to find a dive bar for you! (I did that for a friend of a friend from Spain once, she was an English teacher, who wanted to experience it for her own edification ...😉) some people take pride in hanging out in a dive bar. It's not the same as every pub, just a certain kind of pub. It's a little less clean, and a portion of the clientele might be a bit rough around the edges. No pretentions or "notions" whatsoever. But when you *choose* to hang out there over less gritty places, you sort of appreciate the lack of notions

Usually when an older person is Carded, (ID checked) it's done as a form of playful flattery. It's basically the bartender saying that the patron looks a lot younger than they really are. Everyone involved knows it's baloney, but it's a quick, easy way to start an older person's evening off with a laugh and a smile. Sure, it's cheesy, but most folks enjoy it.

I love the pub culture in Ireland. My first experience was Hoban's in Westport. We were on a tour and knew that the Irish performer leading our tour would be there with local musicians that evening. A woman we didn't know waved us in to sit near her(seating was very limited). She chatted away and eventually we were joined by 2 more generations of her family. The craic was great, the music was fantastic and the pints were flowing. Since then I have been to Delaney's in Kilkenny and Murphy's in Dingle and many more whose name i can't recall. I don't go to bars in America, since I really am not much of a drinker and my husband doesn't drink at all. But, find me an Irish pub here or in Ireland and I will go for sure.

Yeah, a genuine "dive" is a place where you walk in, and everyone stares at you because you're not a regular, and half the regulars probably have arrest warrants. Most self-proclaimed dive bars want to seem a little bit "outlaw," but really aren't. Not much like Irish pubs though, I don't think.

Being labeled a "Dive Bar" is a Badge of Honor.
It's not posh, and more than likely needs a make-over.
But such places have character ... great food .... cold beer ... and a group of patrons that will make friends with the first visitor that walks through the door !

Sooo the reason we ask people to have their ID even when we know they are of age, is simply for identification purposes in case anything should happen. An emergency, a fire or a fight, for example. I also work in a Dive bar. Years ago they were considered "seedy" but really, all they are is a local place, probably outdated, cheaper drinks, mostly local regulars, decorated with the owners old junk, caked with dust...But still has charm. After all my years of bartending the dive bars is where I tend to make the most money.

A couple people mentioned “hole in the wall” as another name for dive bars, but holes in the wall can be any type of little, old restaurant. Essentially, you’re walking down a street and see a crusty little door with a tiny sign and no windows, and go inside to find a tiny restaurant that may or may not pass inspection. But if they have good food and a good atmosphere, you’ve found a gem!

In America, "Blue Laws" were established to stop certain activities on Sundays. How they were created and enforced differed greatly based on what State or City you were in. I never heard of Blue Laws stopping women from using bars (as Editor Diane stated).
However, back in the day, American bars were segregated by sex -- the men in one section and women in a smaller location. Women could sit with other women and smoke and drink. In fact, there was a second entrance (usually around the side of the building) called the "Ladies Entrance" which led directly into the Women only section.

So you know if you are heading over there to expect a longer night. Some states are 24 hours. Unrelated to bars, but you can old buy alcohol at a store Mon-Sat 11amp-11pm and Sunday 1pm to 9pm. Sundays sales used to be illegal and have only been allowed for 2-3 years.

I grew up in the northeast part of Philadelphia. There, the blocks of row houses always have an "end house" at the corner. The basement is exposed at ground level, and was usually a corner grocery store, barber shop or beauty parlor, shoemaker, or a bar/pub (I lived in an Irish neighborhood). The front corner of the building was the entrance to the pub/bar, or as my grandfather called them to the day he died, "tap rooms". Toward the rear of the buildings there was usually a second door, with a sign, "Ladies' Entrance". The rear of the building was usually a few tables, as women simply did not drink at the bar. As neighborhood establishments, these were not fancy clubs; just the locals bellying up to knock down some brews and, as you say, have some good craic. One of my favorite things to do back then was listen to the baseball game on the radio, or if it was a step up from a "dive bar", watch it on the small television hung in the corner of the bar.

We had a Sargent that used to walk around town after closing time pressing his ear to doors and windows listening for any noise from inside before summoning reinforcements and hammering on the doors, as all inside scarpered out the back door, into the yard coming back in when An Garda had gone. @@DianeJennings actually the US has lockdowns too. We call them private parties and its only people the owner knows are allowed to be there. The reason is a private party can serve booze legally up till 2pm or 3pm in most states. Where the public sale of alcohol ends at 12pm to 12:30pm in most states.
Tabs are actually not that common, in most bars you have to be a regular, and on good terms with the manager/owner.
One thing to remember is to distinguish between a local bar, a sports bar, and a nightclub.
The local corner bar has food durring the day and evening, and supervised kids are sometimes let in up till around 8 pmish, but can't drink, admittance is depending on the state. May have a tv with the local news on or local sporting event. It may also have karaoke one or two nights a week.
A sports bar has tv's everywhere and kids are not allowed period. More like what you described.
A nightclub has recorded music or live bands constantly along with massive dance floors. Again minors are not allowed at all.

I used to go to an Irish pub in NY owned by three sisters from Ireland who eventually moved back. It always had a crowd of Irish ex-pats at the bar. They had about 4 or 5 TVs each tuned to a different sporting event popular in Europe. Football, field hockey or whatever. But every TV had the sound on as well as the jukebox and it was this massive cacophony like these Irish gals didn’t know what to do with all those TVs. The Guinness was gorgeous and the shepherds pie and curry was lovely.

Kevin's in Florida, South West coast, has the craic...
People sometimes get offended because they don't understand how the service works. They have a seating area inside, with table service i think, but the entire pub and outdoor area is bar service. Best fish and chips in Florida. That and a proper pint, and the vibes, I'm happy. (Kevin's adorable and wicked funny, too🥰)
EDIT: Kevin's the owner, my bad, the name of the place is Celtic Ray Public House, in Punta Gorda, Florida. 🥰 We drove almost 2.5 hours to go see Seven Nations play Live 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 SAVAGE CRAIC... no lie!! Editor Diane - Blue Laws had nothing to do with banning women from bars/pubs/saloons here in the USA. They were (silly) laws banning the sale of Alcohol (and other ungodlike things) on a Sunday (like you could buy baby formula but not a baby bottle). I890-1920 most Saloons were frequented by men, but many had separate ladies entrances, and although drinking was considered unladylike, corner neighborhood Taverns often had women accompanied by their husbands sitting at a table or the bar.

A dive is very much not like a pub. Usually establishments referred to as dives are dirty, often smelling of spilled booze and sometimes urine, and a fight breaking out is as likely as not. People don't go to a dive for a good time, the people there are there because that's the state of their lives. Not to say a person can't have fun in a dive - it just depends on if the person in question enjoys stabbing or being stabbed.

In Massachusetts back in the day the only day they stipulated an opening hour for bars was Sunday (not to to be before 1pm) so bars when they were having a particularly good (non Saturday) night would kick everyone out at 2am and re open at 2:15am. This loophole eventually got fixed about the same time the drinking age went up to 21, Massachusetts also got rid of "Happy Hour" pricing and did other dumb laws. Dumb laws like the one that made it illegal to advertise alcoholic beverages that you don't sell, i.e. if you had a really nice Segram's 7 clock in your bar but decided to stop carrying Segram's 7 but kept the clock because it looked nice they could fine you.

Once people get to know you, especially staff, that's generally OK. :)

Corner/neighborhood/dive bar are all variations on a theme and much closer to your idea of a Pub and would be very common in middle America. As with your Pubs, commonly family owned and possibly passed down to many generations. May or may not serve different levels of food. My neighborhood bar has a few highchairs in the corner for the families when they bring the kids in for a bite to eat.

I am an American "Irish Pub" owner. We do allow kids in til 9pm. We stay open til 2am usually when the "younger crowd" comes in we have music or karaoke. We have pool tables and food and such. We do have 2 tvs in one seating area (for folks who are looking for sports scores or something - we will also play a streaming service of funny internet videos) and 2 large projectors that we use for Karaoke so everyone can sing along if they like. If a bar is trying to capture that "Dive Bar" vibe - then yes, its totally ok to refer to it as a dive bar. A dive bar is that neighborhood hangout. Not fancy, no "mixology" will be found there. Maybe a handful of mixed drinks but mostly beer, whiskey and 2 part drinks (rum and coke, vodka and cranberry, etc). Usually small (1200 square feet or so). Also popular because they can also be a little lax on the ID requirements making it a young persons first "Bar Experience". If you have any questions - let me know. I have decades of experience in the industry here in California and have visited maybe 40 or 50 American "Irish Pubs". They are varied and strange lol.

Just to clarify why people obviously above drinking age are asked for their ID in America. The law can and will hold an individual employee of a bar criminally responsible as an individual for providing alcohol to anyone underage rather than the employer. Also, in some states it is also illegal to provide alcohol to someone without ID regardless of age. You could be 100 years old and still be asked for ID in America in the more regressive States. Every state has different laws.

A "dive bar" is a very basic bar, usually with minimal interior decoration or visual appeal. The drinks are cheap and mostly consist of shots of hard liquor and cans or bottles of beer, though beer on tap is not uncommon. Food is generally not served, though they may allow you to order delivery food directly to the bar. Dives can be located on commercial streets but not usually in "nice" areas. Some bars really 'lean in' on their dive status as a deliberate business model and may open as early as 6am (or as early as the law allows). A dart board and pool table would not be out of place.

Dive bars are pretty much like pubs, except you wouldn't bring your family with children there. They are quiet during the day, but after 10pm or so, they can get loud and rowdy. If they do sell food, it's usually a single signature item or just frozen pizzas or some freezer-to-fryer situation.
Here, a family friendly pub is more like a taproom, which is a bar run by a brewery that exclusively sells its own beer and no hard liquors, often with a full food menu or a food truck parked outside. Many have board games, arcade machines, and sometimes live entertainment.

Running a tab....when I was stationed in Germany, whenever you were in a gasthouse or restaurant, your bartender or waitperson would turn your beermat over and mark a stroke on it to keep track of how many you'd ordered. At the end, or when you were ready to go, they'd check the back of the beermat and charge you for that number of drinks. It was very convenient. Also, a word about American blue laws. They vary state to state (as you can imagine), and here in Texas, you can't buy liquor on a Sunday, and you can only buy beer and wine after 1 PM (although it may be noon). At some point I keep hoping all the uptight old fogies who pass laws and never think to repeal them, or are simply uptight all the time, will go away and we can all enter the 21st century, and quit pretending it's still the middle of the last century, or sometime in the middle ages. Despite the very middle ages type plague we're going through.

Judging from the comments here, the definition of "dive bar" seems to have changed quite a bit from when I was growing up. To me, a dive bar is definitely a no-frills place, but it's much worse than that. It's a place that's run down. The floor doesn't get swept too often, nor does anything else get cleaned too often. The restrooms look as if they haven't been cleaned in decades. The drinks are inexpensive. However, it's not only the state of the bar that makes a dive bar. The clientele is usually both poor and alcoholic. They go there to drink their troubles away. A dive bar is about as depressing a place as you can imagine.

A dive bar is more of a classification of bar rather than a compliment or insult. Dive bar = a little dark and gritty, jeans and a tshirt, pool tables, on the small side, etc.
Then there’s chichi bars which would be more upscale, nicer attire, jazzy music, expensive craft cocktails, etc.
Sports bar would be what you’re imagining with TVs on every wall.
Pub would be a smaller, more intimate bar but no pool tables generally, but also relaxed casual attire is acceptable.
And then there’s clubs which I’m sure I don’t have to explain. (:

Normally, when you refer to a dive, it's really not a place you want to go alone...It's that place where you walk in and grab a pool cue, even if you don't intend to play.....However, it's kind of become a "thing" to be a dive recently, so you have bars that go out of their way to be a "dive". We have one that just opened just down the street from me called The Dive on 75, so, there's that...LOL
