I don't think trump is gifted or anything, but he is certainly not below average intelligence in my estimation. I just think that he didn't really wanted to go to deep into the question, as he eluded to in his answer. He probably is more old school in the way that he doesn't want to share too much of his deepest feelings in public, especially while on a campaign trail. I had the same reaction as you initially when he answered it too generally and basic, but when he started talking about strength and not wanting to cry on TV I changed my mind.
