    This guy was a street baller before street balling even existed. He's one of the few "old-school" guys who I think would play circles around a lot of today's players.

    Before Michael Jordan, there was Pete Maravich. The move he made at 3:50 is mind-boggling! I just read his bio (by Mark Kriegel). A good read, that I recommend to any NBA fan. Pete wrestled with many inner demons, until he left the NBA and embraced Christianity. He died of a heart condition that usually kills people before they reach the age of 20. How he lived to 40, at the level of play he maintained, is astounding! RIP Pete. You were one in a million.

    Fantastic. My brother in law once told me he saw Pistol Pete in the pros running full speed bouncing the ball between his legs for at least four dribbles. He told me you could barely see his hands because he moved so fast!

    I saw Pete in action in New Orleans folks and he was all that and more. Fast, fluid. And what you can't see is all the other impossible things he did that looked so easy. Trust me folks, Pete was one of the greatest, with no qualifications. Check out Bill Walton talking about him. All the pros in the business will tell you.

    @itsspideyman Today's medicine is no where near as crude as they were then. Willis McGahee hyperextends his knee and just 2 years later, he's playing football again. With today's medicine, those operations Pistol had would not have been nearly as invasive. Pistol was as fundamentally sound as it got. A great blueprint to guide a young player. I've seen some of his drill videos and if I had a kid (boy or girl) & they wanted to play basketball, those videos are ones I'd have them watch.

      I loved Pistol Pete but you need to reconsider that. He had handles like no one else ever and probably never will. Players today get into AAU leagues when they are teen agers and so no one will likely ever again develop the ability to master the unique moves Maravich was able to perfect.
      BUT- in all fairness- Pistol's Achilles Heel was his low FG%. It is the dirty little secret of why teams he started on rarely made the playoffs and if they did, they were out in the earl rounds.
      Pistol was a unicorn- we'll never see the likes of him again- but he was not one of the great shooters of the game- he shot a lot but not very efficiently.
      His other drawback was his defense- but that's a different topic.
      Appreciate him for what he could do better than anyone but 'greatest shooter of all time"?- not even in the conversation.

    However, Maravich is now and forever a superior NCAA player that Rondo. Although impressive, Rondo's collegiate resume which includes a National Championship, pales in comparison to Pistol Pete's 40+ ppg average.

    You had to see this cat in person! Out of all the moves they show, I can't find the baddest move I ever saw… where he layer the ball without ever leaving the floor. All in one sweet, smooth motion. Since he never jumped, the defender was caught completely off guard! After the game he said he had been practicing this move for awhile & was simply waiting for the right time to do it. I'd love to see it again! The Pistol… offensively, way before his time!!!

  • @themoneyroom100

    Two reasons Pistol Pete isn't remembered as a competitor for greatest of all-time. 1. He played on lousy teams. 2. He hurt his knees just as his career was taking off. -- If I had a lottery pick and was drafting from all the greats, Pistol's name would be on the board.

    Nobody, but NOBODY, was more fun to watch than Pistol Pete Maravich. What a talent. He played 40 years ago but he would start on any team today. Well, the Heat are so good they don't need him, but I think you get the point. Pete was a special guy who comes along once in a generation, and with today's 3-point line? Imagine how many points Pete would have put-up! It boggles the imagination!

    @itsspideyman I think any basketball fan should know about Pistol Pete. He might be the only star player than might have been a good coach considering his bloodline (his Dad, Press, was a basketball coach but you know that). He, like the Globetrotters, were WAY ahead of their time. Most of this generation have NO IDEA how much of Pistol's game influenced today's NBA. I witness your comments. Too bad he broke down & if those injuries happened today, he'd be as good or better than he was before.

  • @aikibro1
    @aikibro1 13 років тому

    @jamesfmac You're absolutely right. I'm not gonna sit here and act like I'm sort of basketball historian or guru, but I know, watched and played a lot of ball (like many others here I'm sure) and for me the easiest comparison can be made to "White Chocolate". Magic, Kidd and Nash can make the spectacular pass, but they do so largely out of necessity... i.e. when it's warranted. Like Jason Williams, Pistol Pete made the spectacular pass as a matter of routine, i.e. whether necessary or not.

  • @aikibro1
    @aikibro1 14 років тому

    @echeva95 he doesn't have to catch the ball, he flipped it from one hand to another.
    Per my responses above: ... he passed the ball from his right hand directly to his left hand. The only way to pass the ball from one hand to the next is on the bounce. What made it look slick is the fact that he passed it behind his back. Picture the same move in the front... it's like a cross-over dribble w/o the dribble.

  • @TaeTRRoe15

    Smack yourself!!! Pippen's stats were similiar if not better in every category except scoring compared to Jordan. Pippen was more versatile and a better defender. The end of his career wow great debate. Year after MJ retired All-star game MVP 30+ pts 10rebs 5 or 6 stls 3 or 4 assts and 2blks. Led Chicago to the playoffs and took Portland and Houston to the playoffs as well.

    David Stern allows players to carry and travel on literally almost every possession because he gave up trying to find a bunch of players who could do what he did. Only Jason Williams brought that flare again. Hopefully another player like them could come along, and like them, dribble the right way.
