  • In this compelling episode of Betway Beat, host Peter Du Toit sits down with Bafana Bafana legend and seasoned coach Eric Tinkler for a deep dive into the evolving landscape of South African football.
From his experiences coaching in the Soweto Derby with Orlando Pirates to his days as a European-based midfielder, Tinkler brings a wealth of knowledge and unfiltered insights.
He breaks down the rise of exciting young talents like Relebohile Mofokeng and Patrick "Tito" Maswanganyi, while also addressing the critical need for discipline and mental resilience in South African footballers aiming for global success.
Beyond personal stories and tactical breakdowns, Tinkler tackles a significant shift in the local game-the noticeable decline of white South African players at the professional level and within the senior national team.
What has led to this change? Are there barriers preventing greater diversity in the talent pipeline?
From adapting to European football's unforgiving margins for error to navigating cultural and language barriers in Italy, Portugal, and England, Tinkler shares invaluable lessons from his journey.
He also reflects on the high-pressure environment of the Premier League and the battle for survival playing for a relegation-threatened team.
Finally, the conversation comes full circle with Tinkler reliving the magic of AFCON '96, South Africa's greatest football triumph and assessing what's needed to restore Bafana Bafana to its former glory.

I’m a black South African guy and I’m glad you guys talked about the lack of white players in the PSL, especially South African white players…
I have enjoyed watching the likes of Mike Morton, Bradley Grobler, Marc van Heerden, Daniel Cardoso, Dean Furman, Matthew Booth, Jeremy Brockie, etc and I can tell you the talent, discipline, longevity, consistency and grit that white players have is very valuable to the South African game and future BAFANA BAFANA dreams…representation is key, if kids see more of their white heroes in pro football then more kids will pursue that, no one can say white communities are uninformed of the sport nor say they lack facilities, it’s probably just a lack of representation and perhaps some socio-political issues also but indeed it’s not too late, football is the biggest sport in the world, they wouldn’t be investing their lives in something useless…this sport is huge, and football is big in South Africa
But I presume one of the ways to get back to cementing our name amongst African greats is to bring our unique rainbow team that no other African team can replicate even if they try…come on my white brothers, let’s do this

You should have asked the coach more about cape Town city, the time he left for Supersport while the team was doing well. What happened during that time and what went wrong during his second stint at city, compared to his first when the team performed really well.
