Fantastico!!! We had forgotten how high the ceilings are in Santa Maria degli Angeli. Michaelangelo was a genius designing this church from ancient baths. One sad historical fact is shown in a plaque in the little courtyard of the church. Hundreds of Christian slaves were forced to build Diocletian's baths and they stoked the fires day and night to keep the caldarium pools hot . We were thrilled to see the close up of the Servian Walls. Rome has done a marvelous job preserving them along with the other treasures. Grazie mille Romano Impero! Looking forward to your next excursion of Roman wonder!!!! 👏 👏 👏

Does anyone know if Medici family also paid Michelangelo for his work on Diocletian Baths location, since Medici often paid Michelangelo. Thanks to anyone who might know.

    Buongiorno Romano Impero!

7:48 partially correct. The 'decorations' are mostly later, by michelangelo, but they are very very much inspired by what would have been there, replacing the old marble tiles and fascia with new or repurposing the old. It is fascinating to think that the massive and ornate buildings like the baths of diocletian were completed in just under a decade when similar churches took centuries.

@@RomanoImperoTv thank you. I thought I did. I will try it again. Question: was St. John the original form for the original St. Peter before the latter (St Peter) as pulled down?

    • @RomanoImperoTv
      @RomanoImperoTv  Рік тому

If I have not misunderstood the question, no, the first basilica of St. Peter, i.e. the Constantinian basilica was very different from the Basilica of San Giovanni.

@@RomanoImperoTv Thank you. Looking at that peristyle interior that was a standard for basilicas of Christian Rome, i thought it might be. But there are a lot of ancient columns and doors that are reused at Lateran, right?

Yes, the central bronze door of San Giovanni is the original Roman door of the Curia Iulia. It is about 2000 years old. 💖

Yes Michael, they had to be spectacular and probably even more monumental than today's renovations since they were full of statues, mosaics, fountains and basins from the finest marbles. 💖🙂
