- I made my fabric look vintage by staining it with tea, in this video I will be testing out how linnen, cotton and lace dyes with tea. And dying with beetroot juice! Then my stained fabric is made into an antique looking blouse.

My grandma (b. 1883) always told me to use tea if I needed to dye something ecru. Having said that, I believe most of the blouses back then were pure white. One of grandma's most often told stories was about the beautiful new blouse she made herself, inserts, pin tucks, etc. When it was finished she sprinkled and ironed it and hung it on the clothesline outside to become perfectly dry and crisp. Unfortunately, when the maid cleared the next meal away she decided to just toss the leftover tea out the window instead of taking it back to the kitchen. And of course it landed on grandma's new blouse and ruined it! Fifty years later it still hurt!
Very late but I wanted to say that needle waffle is adorable... The lace insertions go so well with the fabric too, it all has this feeling of unity!

Vinegar mordant doesn't tend to work with plant fibres (it is used for wool and silk), but you can boil rusted nails to make a mordant or use aluminum sulfide (alum). Beets dye fabrics a beautiful golden yellow (not red, surprisingly!) But need to be used with the correct mordant.
I believe that beet+tea mixture would have dyed the fabric with both because the tannins would have mordanted the beets as well.
The skirt and the blouse are beautiful, and watching it was very peaceful.

I have used packaged dry powder and liquid dye in the past on different projects. Recently I decided to dye a linen/cotton blend with several liquid dye colors together to make a dark teal color. I also used some overripe blackberries (3 quarts) and a pint of blueberries cooked separately to make a strong dye and put that into the bucket as well. lol. It worked quite well and smelled really good. You strain the berry liquid to remove the seeds and skins, and let it set. You can boil it with the fabric, but I was already doing the dye bath so just added the berry liquid to it. It was fun. Wear gloves doing this, or have purple hands. Your Edwardian bodice turned out beautifully. Congrats!
I've never actually thought of berrys as dye, but it makes sense with how much they stain. Does the liquid dye have a mordant in it to set the colours or do you add that separately?
Oh..I thoroughly enjoyed your video..Felt for you over the mishaps..and all that work..But what a beautiful blouse!! Well sewn..I can crochet Edwardian Era lace..but this is way above my skill level..🙂
I've heard you aren't truly fluent in a language until you understand the 'yokes'. And such lovely hand turned sewing machine stiches!! Loved it.
Beautiful! Beetroot is notoriously fugitive and bast fiber are even harder to dye.
If you have plenty of fabric take a big square or rectangle and add in your pintucks and lace insertions then treat it as a new fabric and put your pattern on top of it and cut out :)
Ps your pots look like it’s aluminum some warn not to use aluminum for dying with acid since it can affect outcome- I use stainless steel.

Thank you! I bought the fabric a few years back at a independent shop in Norway. I've never seen it before or since then. I tried looking for any markings on the fabric, they usually add names to the selvages, but couldn't find any :/

The waistband isn't that tight so I can pull the buttons to where I can reach it ;)
