Hey herbal friends This was my first video I ever made 10 years ago. I have a new channel its Tajeanhus Greens Herbs & Produce. Come see our new channel. I cannot get into this channel anymore if anyone knows how to retrieve an old account please let me know. Thank you all for your wonderful comments. Namaste!
I was looking up how to cook fiddleheads when I found this. I feel like an idiot. For years I have been paying $6.99 to $8.99 a lb for these, and after watching you I could have just gone out my back door and picked what I wanted. They have been there ever since we moved here 30 years ago. I am so ashamed I did not investigate this sooner.
Fantastic video, you explained and clarified everything that I had questions about! Right along with what looks and sounds to be an excellent recipe! Very professional
I appreciate you start from the field and end up in the kitchen with all the safety tips. That was the video that I was looking for. Just great! Thank you for sharing!!! Alexandre from Québec, Canada
The "poisonous" ferns mentioned in this video are the cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea) and are also edible, but not as palatable as the ostrich fern. Remember to cook your fiddleheads long enough to prevent food-born illnesses.
Nice, not many white fuzzies here. Not sure I would eat anything with white on it though in the bush. I have eaten a ton of fern though and raw baby fiddleheads are awesome. I should have eaten more fiddleheads on Mt Bromley. LOL! too busy catching fish back then and visiting Orvis.
Check out my new UA-cam channel. Tajeanhus greens herbs and produce. This was my first video years ago i was a newbie to speak. The cinnamon ferns white fuzzy ones are slightly poisonous so id er on the cautious side its not worth risking eating them and getting ill. Peace!
I went to the best fiddle head spot I know of today, some jerk had come and taken all the fiddle heads off all the stumps, I don't think the stumps will have enough energy to make more fronds this year or next. So I had to collect nettles and Jerusalem artichokes instead
+Bill Owen yeah, I understand why you feel that way, and I would feel that way harvesting non-replunishing items. Like maybe over fishing an area, or taking too many clams..ect. But there are just sooo many of these out there, and I suppose if EVERYONE was out there picking them it might become a problem, but where I am at there are literally B-ILLIONS.
He says don't pick more than 4 heads to a plant or it is liable to kill the plant, then he keeps moving to other plants carefully picking fiddleheads. No where in the video does it mention he picked every fiddle head
Do you have to "bath" them to get rid of the tannins? Will the tannins harm you or they just bitter? I just sauteed some fiddleheads up with some garlic and olive oil and ate them over some red beans and rice. They are delicious. I hope I don't get sick? I guess I will find out.
Some people eat them raw other simmer to remove tannins. They can get bitter thats the reason for blanching. Also if you want to freeze them you need to blanch them. My new UA-cam is Vermont Pure herbs and produce., this one was hacked and i can no longer get into it. Peace!
Master herbalist? probably not. Some misinformation there, only this one video produced, and the website is gone. Hope she didn't get into some bad herbs.
Sir this was my very first time making a video. I try to think positive and theres lots of good information. Im actually a master herbalist and holistic practitioner. This video is very old but a good one indeed. Peace!

Just ate like 30 white and fuzzy ones last night. cinnamon ferns after boiling. Feel perfectly normal.
Oh the white fuzzy on yours are different. I picked and ate cinnamon ferns.
I've only eaten them with butter vinegar and salt and they were delicious.
A new way!

Instead of zooming get closer with the camera otherwise the picture quality gets as fuzzy as the poisonous ferns

I recently bought Tennessee ostrich fern roots and I'm wondering are they the same as the ones you can eat?
