  • In June 2015, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee visited the GSK Human Performance Lab for a day of assessments to understand their individual responses to heat exposure, marking 1 year until the start of the Rio Olympics. By simulating conditions in Rio, they were able to see how they respond, so that bespoke nutrition strategies can be developed in order to aid their performance. The tests in the environmental chamber enable the HPL's scientists to gather information on how the brothers respond to the environment, including measuring their individual sweat rate and electrolyte losses as well as the thermal impact by monitoring core body and skin temperature. This data has been used to develop tailored strategies to help them cope in challenging environmental conditions; included within this is the development of unique drink formulas to suit each athlete.
Working with the HPL will help the Brownlees learn more about their physiological capabilities, to unlock better performance and ultimately give them a greater chance of replicating their London 2012 heroics.
