I have many gardening books, but I’ve never really been able to truly figure out how to properly prune a rosebush! I’m so thankful to have come across your video! I do so much better with visual learning as opposed to reading! Thank you so much!
After wasting my time on UA-cam in search of a video regarding how to properly dead head a rose plant ? Finally i got what i was looking for. Thanks for sharing a proper, step by step and useful video .
Thanks for the tips and knowledge on how to care for roses. I rerooted a bunch of roses from my mom’s rose plant at her house last year and I wanted to do all my research on how to care for them as they grow! I feel confident now that I’ve watched this! 💕
Thank you for this helpful video. I have some roses but didn't know how to prune them or deadhead them. Your video has been so helpful and informative.
Good info! Just started growing roses and there is so many different schools of thought out there, it’s hard to figure out what is best for you. Simple is better, thank you.
Oh ! Thank you so much! This is such a great vdo for a newbie like me. I am praying hard that I did not kill my rose..I did cut them pretty deep..not quite sure I cut them at the 5 leaves either 😣. Thank you!
marinabayview they should bounce back just fine if you pruned them a little more vigorous. It rejuvenates them! Also it's not super important you cut at a 5 leaf set. The idea is that part of the stem is strong but there are buds all up & down the stem. the rose will just set a stalk out at the next bud. Enjoy your flowers!
Danni Riley I am in Southern California. An independent nursery I frequent teaches various classes. He says to hard prune in April instead of January to get through our long hot summers. What do you think of that? Sometimes I just prune more than necessary, as you said, to rejuvenate them. Thank you! 😊🌹
Thanks for such a clear explanation. The one thing I don’t agree on is how early you deadhead. You never get a chance to in joy the bloom. As soon as it fully opens you deadhead. I like the look of your rose bushes before deadheading. It just makes them look to thin. Just my opinion. Nevertheless great video.
I think the soil is just too dry that it won't absorb. I'm definitely going to try putting in tub for a bit. Thank you so much for all of your help! You are so easy to understand.
Seems go me just as your roses come into full bloom you choose to dead head them. Wait until the petals fall and rose hips just start to form then dead head!
Hey! Good job with the close-up, the professionals are not good with actually showing what they are describing. We enjoyed it, please keep it up. New gardeners!
I dead-head my roses to prevent the petals making a mess on the public pathway, then giving the impression that I'm lazy, incompetent and lack a basic maintenance routine to my life.
Thank you for explaining so clearly.so far all other videos that I watched were very confusing. Also what soil mixture is best to use if planting in pots.
Donť agree with that 1/4 inch you leave above the leaf. Itś an invitation to fungal spore attack. Circulation and immune defense is non existing in these left stumps. They will die back and leave a nice yummy piece for the funghi to reside in, especially when the weather is cool and rainy. Overall good info though 👍.
I don't see deadheading those beautiful roses, I would wait until the blooms start to fall off, but what do I know, I'm just getting into growing roses
You don't let the bloom drop on the ground because of black spot and that's a lot of petals to clear up from around the Rose. Also she mentions at the beginning of the video about using the petals.
lavonne carrick dig it up and put new soil in about 18 inches deep, & all around. Get Bayer 3 in 1 rose food and water the heck out of it! But, if it’s old, sometimes they have lived out their life. Imho. What have you got to lose?! 😊🙏🏼🌹
I also inherited these rose bushes and it took some time to learn how to care for them. At the time of this video I was babying them as several of them weren't doing very well. I hope you enjoy your 30 bushes, that's a lot of pruning! Happy gardening
danni great info and very helpful video ,thanks for the insight i will do it to my roses too i should of done it before i made my video , loved and liked the video
Why do you cut of roses in bloom. Your bushes don't have that many flower heads. They look thin. I usually take them when the flower heads start to be brown. Full flowers are more interesting than just lots of buds. All those buds will be taken away when they in full bloom and no roses left.
Thanks for the info!! I just bought my first 3 rose bushes. They are hybrid tea. I have no idea what I'm doing. Do you have any fertilizer recommendations? Like how often and how much(10-10-10) etc, Thanks!!!
Just got my first rose bush called Miracle on the Hudson. You explained everything SO well. It is still in it's pot for the past 2 or 3 weeks bc it's been too hot and dry to plant it. How much water should I be giving it while it's potted, and then when it's planted? Also, any advice on how to plant it? I know the hole should be twice the width. Thank you!
Karen Cokeley yay for new roses! For watering id just make sure the soil doesn't dry out in the pot. depending on your climate & where you're keeping the pot this could mean daily watering, twice a day if it's super dry & hot or every other day depending. Just check the soil & if it's most you should be good. Once planted I would give it at least a gallon to 2 gallons of water a day for its first season. Next season you might get be able to get away with less watering (just keep an eye on it for signs of stress). All of my roses are well-established and are only watered by our sprinklers which is every night for 10 minutes. For planting I dig a hole twice as wide as the pot & about 50% deeper. This is mainly to make sure the soil around the newly planted flower is broken up & makes it easier for the roots to establish. Put your plant in the hole adjusting the soil level in the hole to make sure the base of the plant is at soil level (don't stress too much about this, just eyeball it). Then backfill the hole & water a full 1-2 gallons. The soil level will probably drop some so add more soil so it's back to where you had it. Hope this helps! If you want to watch a video on this I searched & found a good one by Star Roses and Plants called "How-to: plant a container knock out rose."
Thanks so much! When I water the roses, the water immediately runs out the bottom. Also, when I go to plant, should I add something to the soil when i back fill it?
Karen Cokeley I do not amend my soil when I plant a rose but I know plenty of people who throw a handful of Rose tone in the bottom of the hole when planting. As for watering... Does the water immediately run out of the bottom and the soil is dry or does the water immediately run out of the bottom and the soil is wet? If your soil is wet and it is immediately running out of the bottom when you water you might want to wait a day in between watering. They don't want to be sitting in water all the time, this could cause root rot. But if the water immediately runs out of the bottom of the can but the soil is still dry then you could have a plant that is too dried out and the water is just going around a dry root ball. If this is the case then I would put the pot in the tub and fill the tub with a couple inches of water to let the plants soak up water from the bottom. Even going as far as watering from the top. Essentially you're trying to reconstitute very dry soil if this makes sense. After just water as normal. I hope this helps!
hello Danni so glad that your video pop on my suggestion list. few weeks ago i bought double knock out rose bush its still on the plastic container havent had a chance to planted to ground i kinda of wanted to leave there for a while. well my question is the following i bought it with lots of buds and they fall off its been doing that for few days, buds don't bloom @ all can you please let me know what i could do for they could bloom and not fall off T.I.A
Thank you for this video! Very helpful, I just moved to a house and the yard is full of rose bushes and I've never had to care for them before. What do you do with the petals that you said you save?
Chris Lopez as long as you have a healthy plant & deadhead constantly as the blooms are fading the plant will keep budding up & blooming every few weeks till fall.
Technically the angle doesn't really matter, you just don't want water sitting on the cut stem causing rot. The plant will grow in the direction the bud eye is pointing. You can see the bud eye sitting in the point where a leaf grows out from the plant stem. So basically whichever direction the leaf set is pointing, this is the direction your new plant stem will grow. There a bud eyes all over a stem but its just easier to spot the 5 leaf sets making pruning faster for me.
Danni Riley...thank you for replying, it's a shame you don't know the names, but so glad you've kept them, some people rip out all of what previous owners have planted, which is so sad. I do belive the first rose you pruned is a "Flaming Peace" because i have it. The others will have to remain a pleasant mystery. 🌹
Hi there! When i made this video i was in the process of updating these flower beds. They now have mulch & i definitely recommend mulch as it helps retain moisture & discourages weeds.
Too bad I can't show you my garden.Your roses look kind of scrawny and naked. Not reallyy the way I like my roses to look like.I suppose you like to use them in vases as you're going for few and big blooms.rather than having a really beautyfully blooming bush.
You have some good information but the instructions are too slow and dragged out. Short and concise is the best way to keep people's attention. Think of what you're going too say then get it out fast. There's too much hesitation. Thanks.
Ann Phillips I have a beautiful yellow rose climber. It seems to have a lot of ugly going on. I do feed the climber with a Bayer 3 in one fertilizer. The whole climber is not producing blooms and an overall beautiful growing season like the last three years. Is the plant getting too old or am I doing something wrong. I love this rose climber. Help,
Exactly the way my Dad taught me 60 years ago!
Thank you for a lovely video.

Great job went slow, zoomed in. Spoke slowly . Great teacher.

Thank you so much! I have always found this complicated and not fully figured out where and why to cut. My roses and I thank you!
I have one rose that is a problem dead-heading, but I’m going to pay attention to direction of leaf buds. Thank you! 😘🌹
Thank you for this helpful video. I have some roses but didn't know how to prune them or deadhead them. Your video has been so helpful and informative.
I bet it looks beautiful. Today I trimmed all my roses, thank you for the inspiration. Hoping for a second bloom.
Very good information I followed this advice and our rose bushes really responded.
Good info! Just started growing roses and there is so many different schools of thought out there, it’s hard to figure out what is best for you. Simple is better, thank you.
Good job you simplified the whole ordeal nicely

Love the tutorial and lovely choices of colors of roses!

Thank you so much. Can't wait to start deadheading the correct way.
I think the soil is just too dry that it won't absorb. I'm definitely going to try putting in tub for a bit. Thank you so much for all of your help! You are so easy to understand.
Liked your video, put some mulch around the roses, makes them stand out more and retains moisture.
Thank you Joanne! This video was made while i was overhauling that garden bed. It now has mulch & looks even better! Thank you
Seems go me just as your roses come into full bloom you choose to dead head them. Wait until the petals fall and rose hips just start to form then dead head!
Ive started growing trailing roses. Great tips thank you !
Kinda like a haircut for your roses and I love the song!
Great video for rose lovers who need basic help. Thanks
Nice. Informative thank you❤🌹👍🏴
Thanks very quick and clear
So why did you save the rose petals? Thanks
Great video! Thank you

Wondering why my rose plant does not bloom at all! It was transplanted several years ago.
lavonne carrick dig it up and put new soil in about 18 inches deep, & all around. Get Bayer 3 in 1 rose food and water the heck out of it! But, if it’s old, sometimes they have lived out their life. Imho. What have you got to lose?! 😊🙏🏼🌹

Great video. How do you know when to dead head your rose flower.
Great info. Thank you
How much mulch/ potting mix you give to your rose plants every year?
My queen ant has laid lots of eggs this week.. 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜👑👑👸👸🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🙌🙌🙌🙌

What do you do with the rose petals you said you keep?
CaN i use Miracle Gro when I water?
As soon as roses bloom I cut the flowers off too.
I have rugosa roses that I grow for rose hips. Should I be deadheading them and should I stop deadheading in mid to late summer?
My bush just dropped all of its flowers :/ trying to make it bloom again and make sure it’s healthy
I’m new to gardening. I just wanted to know what you do with the petals? I probably missed something.😂
I dry them & put them in bath bombs 😊
Always disinfect your tools
Got some mini roses in Asia, there really aren't many 5 leaves off the steam. Some right at the bottom of the plant?
What do you feed your rose plants
oh wow been awhile since i heard tisbury lane!
Thank you for this video! Very helpful, I just moved to a house and the yard is full of rose bushes and I've never had to care for them before. What do you do with the petals that you said you save?
I normally toss them in a bowl & let them dry out in my garage, then use them in bath bombs & sugar scrubs. Congratulations on your new house!!!
Hello,
If I deadhead now start of July, do you think I’ll have blooms by the end of August?
Also great video, super easy to understand.
Chris Lopez as long as you have a healthy plant & deadhead constantly as the blooms are fading the plant will keep budding up & blooming every few weeks till fall.
Thank you. ? U doing with rise petals.
Can you help us count to five again! Why are you not wearing your protective garden gloves?
Can you do one on Cannas?
Does the direction of the angle of your cut matter? Will it encourage the rose bush to grow in a certain direction?
Technically the angle doesn't really matter, you just don't want water sitting on the cut stem causing rot. The plant will grow in the direction the bud eye is pointing. This is a great video, very clear information. I particularly like the orange roses, do you know the names?
I don't. Inherited these bushes when we bought our home and sadly don't know the varieties. They sure are pretty though!

Not all of us suffer from a 30 second attention span. I thought she did great.
Sounds like you need to slow down and smell the roses. 😉
You're making a simple task seem far too complicated and technical. Leaves do not matter at all when you're dead-heading.
Please add some color to your voice lest you get pruned for sounding dead
