Never thought about balance/weight distribution in a handheld rig! Thought it was only for gimbal work but this video has shown me to appreciate weight distribution to the base line of cameras.
A camera rig should always be able to sit evenly on its own weight. It simple makes it easier to handle, especially one handed where balance meas more than ever. Picking up a rig that is unbalanced with one hand will mean you will have to use even more grip strength to hold it balanced. Not only is this uncomfortable, it's also tiring after doing it for a long amount of time.
that's something I also learned during my internship at a filmproduction studio. Attaching the rig correctly really helped me shoot for longer without as much muscle power. Thank you for shining light on the little things as well - they might not be the fanciest things to talk about, but they help newer filmmakers/creators out a lot. So glad I found your channel :D
It’s the little things that build up and make big changes in the way we shoot! Welcome to the channel! If you have any questions at all about filmmaking, feel free to ask 🙌🏽
I kept changing my handle, mainly cause it ''looks cooler'' when it faces away from the camera. but finally realised practicality is now important than looks :)
I love this. At first I thought it was going to be a PSA about handles breaking your camera, but pleasantly was more about being intentional with your gear for better results! Definitely a reminder we all need ♥
not very many videos on the top handle subject on youtube, this one was the best one, and the only one I seen talking about how to really properlly utilize it. Great content as usual! Congrats on 10k subs its almost there! You earned it my man, mark my words 100k by next year!
Another reason to get a top handle is so you can mount your monitor, on top of it. That's my current rig for now. And you're right, it's nowhere near balanced! You kinda make me want to save up for mounting a battery at the back. Thanks for the video!
I creat mine with only the cage with a smallrig rotating side handel plus a Peak Design strap on my neck. very stable and light weight. original batteries with charging case connect to a power bank (can be a v mount batterie) in bag. active steady shot + OSS is awesome
I have a ninja v with a heavy battery and thus my top handle is rigged as you saying. Yeah with a usbC battery in the middle so my camera is actually center heavy. But yeah I will check my setup soon. nice of you to get this stuff out.
So i just got my top handle and put it all together with my ninja v, that has a battery slot on the right side, making it roll a bit in the right direction… any tips on how to counterweigh that? Great video!
Yeah! I would add maybe a shotgun microphone on the other side or maybe a mic receiver (for example dji mic). The shotgun microphone is gonna get you better scratch audio for those just in case moments. Another option would be a side handle or actual counterweights with a 1/4” screws! Hope that helps
Another great video! I want to move to more handheld stuff but it's so hard to move away from the gimbal! Maybe building a nice balanced rig with a top handle is the move! Thanks for the inspiration Victor!
If it's a hot shoe microphone like the ECM-B1M, unfortunately, you cant or you'd have to mount it differently maybe a hot shoe extender but I don't know if there's such product. Usually a microphone that's XLR or 3.5mm jack works since it doesnt rely on the hot shoe of the camera and can be placed on any cold shoe mount which is on the top left side of the cage or a stand alone cold shoe mount rig attachment.

They are the same weight 😎

It looks cooler facing towards the lens

Exactly!! It helps so much with a balanced rig rather than just throwing in all the parts

Can also mount the monitor directly to the cage with a swivel as well. Not really the best care but yes handle is better when using monitor! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I liked the message of balancing the camera if you are using a top handle to shot.
Easier to handle and get more stable shots !

What about when using a side handle and shooting in portrait orientation
Would you still recommend balancing the camera with an external battery?
Yup! Always balancing it out so you can easily film with a balanced rig
Thank you for your suggestion.

You have more control and less shaking. I've played around with the handle and now find that it's better facing away from you.

So many people choose esthetics over functionality 😂 adding so much gear that is not even needed
excited to see whats to come bro! quality > quantity

Handheld will change your way of shooting once you master it! It does take some time but rewarding at the end 🙌🏽 gimbals are great too though!
I never thought of that! I am starting to rig my camera right now and will definitely keep that in mind! Nice vid 💪🏻
Happy rigging!! Let me know if you have any questions 🙌🏽🙌🏽
What’s your opinion on the half cage compared to the full cage?
Both are good! Personally I love half cages but full cages are good if you want to put handles on the sides of your camera! Just not a big fan of em
This video is extremely useful. Thank you so much.
How would it work a microphone with that rig? For example if I’m using a sony ECM-B1M, can it still be used with that handle?

I wasnt the only one who felt uncomfortable with a handle. Great content!
Great video dude, crazy how uncomfortable a handheld rig can be when it isn't balanced properly!!
Right!! it's so uncomfortable. That's why rigs are so fun to build... cheaper than cars LOL
