I was part of large visual effects team comprised of 100s of people at Visual effects stuidos like Framestore, Technicolor etc. I think you could look into Visual effects pipeline or visit website of studios like Framstore or MPC to get more idea on the process.

I used NASA images for clouds and the shadows were painted. The earth layer was rendered as a Latlong image at 32K for the base layer.
