Donnie Shell's Famous Hit on Earl Campbell

  • Hall of Famer Donnie Shell's famous hit on Earl Campbell, badly bruising Campbell's ribs and sidelining him for the game as the Steelers go on to win 13-3, clinching the AFC Central crown.
While I am a Steelers fan, Earl Campbell is my favorite running back of all time. I view him as the greatest RB of my lifetime. But if you don't recognize the greatness of this hit (on multiple levels), you don't understand the game.
Oklahoma drills only happen during PRACTICE. Straight-up collisions with shoulders squared and both players running straight at each other almost NEVER happen in a game.
There was no intent to injure here; it was a bang-bang play at game speed and a textbook tackle by Shell on a fellow Hall of Famer. Not only is it perfectly executed, it forces a turnover and completely changes the momentum of the game. And the Steelers go on to win -- not just the game, but the Super Bowl.
    It's an epic moment.
There's no disrespect meant to Campbell in any of this. Quite the opposite. Campbell's undisputed greatness is the reason this hit is still being talked about more than 40 years later. It's a great moment between two Hall of Fame players.

Ham got pancaked because he got double teamed, which I think helps make this play happen.
The receiver who came in motion threw the initial block, then the fullback came around the edge and pancaked Ham while he was still engaged with the receiver.
I’m pretty sure either the fullback (more likely) or receiver blew his assignment to block the next man (Mike Wagner), who was right next to that block when he made Earl spin out, thus allowing Donnie to crush him.

Here is proof of what happened to Shell when Earl was running straight at him! I believe it’s the 2nd or 3rd play in this compilation! To me, more impressive than Shell spearing an off balance, spinning, one foot on the ground Earl, after already shedding one tackle, and making another guy miss, oh, and getting the first down BTW! Yeah Shell hit him hard. A clean, unobstructed shot helmet to the ribs makes it look a whole lot more impressive than it really was. In the other clip, you can watch Earl give Donnie a 20 yard ride, like your crazy uncle at a family picnic. Not even close! I'm a Steelers fan from Pittsburgh and never rooted for Campbell a day in my life, but there's no denying how great he was. I can't believe how underrated he is. From 1974 until 1980 the Steelers were such and integral part of this city. No prima donna's like today on that team. (Except for Lynn Swann). Someone got out of line. Joe Greene or Jack Lambert would plant them in the ground. Earl Cambell was a freight train of a running back. For me though, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown and Gale Sayers were my favorite running backs. The Renfro catch. Great games. I really liked Bum Phillips, how could you not.
