Why I cancelled my SUN PRINCESS cruise next week / What the "Move Over" offer was for me

  • Have you heard about the "Move Over" from Princess? Are you curious?
    I was supposed to board the all-new SUN PRINCESS tomorrow for a great Mediterranean cruise. I chose to cancel that cruise and trade it for one next year. Why? In this video, I outline what the "Move Over" offer from Princess was for me, and why I chose to take it. I also detail what I gave up and what I got in return.
    I am sharing this video in the hopes that it is helpful to someone who may receive such an offer in the future. This one sounded too good to be true, but it's legitimate. This is an explanation only, not a recommendation for anyone to do the same.

    I have NEVER heard of getting cash for OBC that wasn’t used! Always just lost the money left! Good for you!

    I had the same offer & took advantage of the offer. We booked the 4th sailing thinking all the kinks will be taken care of. As it turned out it became the 2nd sailing . We are disappointed to learn the ship is not ready . So when this offer came , we took it. Now we have a 14 day cruise for free & upgraded cabin & 100% refundable credit of the amount of my previous cruise fare . Thank you Princess.! That’s the way to make your loyal customers happy!!!

      Sounds like you got a great deal! Unfortunately, the way they handled other customers, like those on the 2 canceled inaugural Sun Princess cruises has been a case book example of how NOT to handle customers. I've heard through cruise travel experts that they should have cancelled those two cruise (and possibly the current inaugural cruise) back in early January. However, they chose to keep customers "on the hook" as long as possible, which caused a lot of unnecessary distress for those customers.

    Wow!! You really got a sweet deal! I would have taken that offer too. We, on the other hand, were royally screwed by Princess. We were on the 2nd canceled cruise on the Sun Princess on February 18th and because they canceled the cruise at last minute, we lost over $1,000 in non-refundable deposits with 3rd parties (Rome hotel deposits, unusable travel insurance, non-refundable museum tickets, etc.). We've filed reimbursement claims twice and executive management refuses our claims because they say it's our fault for booking with 3rd parties. If Princess had canceled with two weeks notice the 3rd parties said we would have been entitled to full refunds.

      I fully sympathise with your situation. Had I known this would happen to people, I would have booked a cruise with another company based on "moral grounds."

      I am so sorry. Definitely two extremes here--your experience vs. the people who got the Move Over offer. My sympathies! That's a lot of money!

      We were booked on Feb 18th as well, received the cancellation notice just hours before we were to leave for the airport to leave for Rome on the 14th, Applied for nonrefundable out of pocket expense for at least the flight of 3700.00 CAD and we did not claim for our booked hotel and museum and transfer fares, would just be happy to get that flight money back for our next cruse in September. Happy for all of you who had better experiences. Still waiting for a reply from princess for our the refund.

    I'm a big fan of Princess Cruises, but after seeing this video, I'm just short of fuming , cause I was suppose to be on the second cruise of the Sun Princess and my cruise was canceled less than 3 days before cruise. Although I got all my money back, plus a FCC of $1500, I'm still out $400 for hotels which were non refundable. I wasn't the one who canceled the cruise , so Princess should give me 100% of monies I spent. If I had canceled the cruise, then that's on me. This was suppose to be a once in a lifetime cruise for me, (probably) and $400 isn't a lot of money, but I shouldn't be out anything, and then here is Princess handing out free cruises like candy. Shame on Princess.

      same story here too, and i'm outraged at how princess treats us compared to those who choose not to go on the cruise.

    We did the exact same thing for our March 9 cruise. The move over was fantastic and we feel very generous. Hope you have a great cruise on the Sun Princess.

    As a side issue, we recently completed a Sky Princess cruise and we also received a free balcony upgrade and a substantial OBC for our next cruise; however, we MUST cruise before the middle of September. This is a condition of the offers. Since we live in Canada, leaving the winter doldrums of snow and ice, why would we cruise in the summer? So hhe offer is just that, an offer but no reservation.

    I hope princess offers this kind of flexibility to future cruisers, I may have to cancel an upcoming one and love for it to work out like this, 2 years is amazing

      If YOU need to cancel a cruise, don't expect these offers! They have actually made cancellation more restrictive and TIGHTENED up the deadline for customers to cancel a booking. Previously you had 14 days before your scheduled cruise in which to cancel and receive a partial refund (25%), but they recently increased that to 30 days. So, the way it works now is you have to give them 90 days notice to receive a full refund, 64-89 days to receive a 50% refund. After 30 days before a sailing, you receive 0% refund.

    The cruise part sounds good. What about the Airfare? I have trip cancellation insurance but this doesn't sound like something that would qualify as a reason to cancel , since it is voluntary.

      I had booked my own airfare with Delta, it was refunded as E Credit

    May I please ask, when you chose your “replacement” cruise, did you do it by phone or by email? We received the move over offer on Monday and we accepted. Received the confirmation email from Princess the same day. Then we chose our replacement cruise and called customer service, who said we would need to email Princess with that information and we are still waiting to hear back. Thank you in advance for your help/reply.

    I've been hearing a lot about this move over offer for the upcoming Sun Princess cruise. There's seems to have been a lot of people getting this offer. Does anyone know if this is because of ongoing issues with work being done on the ship and issues around getting entertainment venues up and running?

      We are on the WC on Coral Princess. Two weeks ago they rerouted us to go around Africa instead of the Suez Canal. We were expecting this would happen and were not surprised. Though we are disappointed to miss Aqaba/Petra, we are excited to visit Cape Town and Namibia. AND we are delighted with Princess’ decision to grant us 15% of our original cruise price as FCC (we’re in an interior and it’s still well over $5K) AND an additional $750 pp OBC on the World Cruise. Very happy with Princess these days.

      @@slowmads Wow your compensation was much better than what we received. We only received about $700 in FCC when they cancelled our Feb 18th Sun Princess cruise at the last minute. I had over $1,000 in losses due to non-refundable deposits with 3rd parties (well documented) that Princess is refusing to reimburse. All of these losses would have been avoided if they had not waited until the last minute to cancel.

    From the information I have, two groups of media including youtubers, vloggers, etc. have been invited to go on board the Sun on the March 9th cruise but broken into 2 groups and 2 portions -- first group on Barcelona-Athens, March 9-14, and second group on Athens-Rome, March 14-19. So, I'm curious about 3 issues: 1) Having invited the media to join the March 9th cruise, does that mean all the entertainment and dining and other experience will now be ready and open as from March 9th?; 2) As such, did the "move over" offers have anything to do with making room for these media junkets?; and, 3) Have the "move over" offers been sent to people who have booked on March 19th cruise and the consequent cruises?

      Well that I don't know. We'd have to be part of their Facebook groups to know. They were many many people in our group that were offered this move over offer. Some accepted and some didn't. I've been wondering about the media event as well. It feels kind of last minute.

    norwegian cruise line take notice from princess, they know how to satisfy there customers. i will be booking all my future cruises on princess.
