My go to rifle is a 16" grendel with a 1-6 lpvo. I use it for deer, hogs, and really anything else out on the property.
I like the factory Hornady ELD and Custom SST for shorter shooting.

I went with 6mm ARC. I absolutely love the 6ARC . I rarely shoot past 880 yards . Realistically I shoot at 600 yards and in . I went with 16" as my go too since 600 yards is my practical max . I have 0 complaints. I'm still learning about long range shooting so 600 yards is actually pretty far for me lol.
6ARC also doubles as super nice Deer and Hogg Rig . Especially paired with 90g Partition / Accubond or 103g ELDX .
Also the 6ARC like the 6.5G are not barrel burners so I can get 5k+ rounds out of Precision barrel . Right now my go to 16" is BA 416R QPQ Premium Black Series . If I do my part I dont have issues hitting 8" plate at 600 yards. I have gone 3 for 3 on 8" plate at 500 yards . Next time at the range I'm gonna try to see if I can go 3 for 3 at 600 on 8" plate .
I was for sure thinking about getting Precision Bolt Gun next year . I'm leaning more towards 6CM . I was looking at Seeking Havak Hit .

I like 6arc I think the problem is availability and price, right now 6arc feels like a proprietary round. I was at a SW and I found they had 2 boxes on the shelf. I picked up one and the other box was being eyed by other patrons.

Thank you for this comparison video. For me, choosing the right caliber is depended upon (1) What I want and use it for. (2) What is the overall cost for the weapon and all needed accessories (which includes bipod, extra magazines and scope) (3) Cost of ammo. Finally I need to consider my overall "buy In" cost and how many times I will be shooting it. In comparing a gas operated vs. a bolt action 308, I chose a bolt action. That was based on the overall comparability between all the different bolt actions. Gas operated 308s face a big difference in my understanding of comparability of after market parts based on the differences in design between manufacturers.

I'm not a long range shooter. The longest kill I ever made was 300 yards and it was with a borrowed Remington 600 in 308. There are more efficient, flatter shooting cartridges, but the standard against which they are measured is the 308. I purchased a 6.5 Creedmoor last year because everyone was raving about the performance of this round. Honestly, I did not notice any reduction in felt recoil, which is what I was most interested in.

As a casual enthusiast, I look for calibers I know will always be readily available and will not burn my barrel prematurely. With that said, my mid range precision is a 18" .223 wylde gas gun and long range is a 20" 308 bolt action. Sure 6.5 and other calibers may be better and reach out a little further, but that's the thing... it's just a little further. If you want to shoot 2k yards or more, then you better start looking at long actions.

Good call on the Grendel, for anything deer size, I pick that over a .308, especially if you have to lug the gun for a few miles. We have built many Grendels and my current tryst is the 6mm ARC. I do not recommend the ARC unless you are an experienced reloader since factory ammo selection is dismal and brass and load data sparse, unfortunately it's become just another Hornady boutique round. Joel I think you would love the ARC, since you have the experience and the knowledge to wring the potential out of it.

I have no idea what it is like to shoot long range. the only thing I can say is I am a gas gun guy. to me .308 is the perfect caliber. it can be used as a battle rifle with a 12.5" short barrel and out perform a 5.56 with a 20" barrel the AR10/lr308 is just about 2lbs heavier then an AR-15 depending on how you set it up. use a 20" barrel .308 and you can hunt any game in North America at 500 + yards, but when it come to an AR-15 platform, I would have to lean towards the 6ARC, from everything I have heard and seen about the 6ARC it is basically the .308 for the AR-15 platform. so in the end maybe one day when I am not a poor I can put my theories to the test on my long range choice. than you for the content it was an educational experience .

I agree and I disagree with some of what you said. Like outperforming a 5.56 cartridge for example... The way that you've explained it... That literally comes down to skill.
The reason I say that is because of my multiple tours in Afghanistan carrying a 5.56 NATO cartridge and some of the distances that I fired it and the results. You're really good with the 308. I'm really good with a 30 ought 6 in some scenarios. But I excel with a 16 inch barrel with a gas platform in 5.56

I would mostly agree with the statement on the energy comparison between the 223 and 6.5 Grendel. I don't think the comparison chart is fair and a bit misleading. 2400fps is a bit slow even for a 77gr. Probably more like a 85-90gr bullet. Not sure why someone would even compare that heavy of 223 load.

77gr is probably a minimum weight for long range out of a .223 and that’s why I picked it.

The 308 will normally not make the list for most shooting at steel at distance. A 308 used in a law enforcement or military context is likely to be taken at distances of 200-600 yards. Snipers rarely shoot out further. A Sniper also rarely ever, if ever uses a self loading rifle. Always a bolt action as they are far more reliable in the real world. Also good to be able to shoot a heavy 308 or 338 bullets considering that you may need to shoot through cover and body armour to make a kill. The 6mm and 6.5mm is great to shoot steel at distance, but I wouldn’t take it out as a service rifle, especially not in a self loading build. I recognise this video was for people looking at a long range cartridge on steel. If however you want a very reliable cartridge for competition target shooting at 200-600, I will take the 308 over my 6mm. Shooting steel is different, you just have to touch the steel, not thread 5 bullets through one hole. I like the 6mm for hunting small game under 350 yards. The problem is when hunters try and use 6 or 6.5 on larger animals because they think BC is all that is important to take down a large animal. Weight of the bullet is a major consideration on large animals. But, I cannot relate to shooting steel as my purpose in shooting is to make a clean kill on small targets at long distances.
