I had a 216 GSi with same engine and it was absolutely brilliant. High revving, responsive, and virtually bulletproof! I sold it and bought a 2 litre "jelly mould" Rover.....BIG mistake! Engine was very poor, leaked oil, and drank fuel. The heater was also a joke and gave out about as much heat as a candle!
Great looking car, never had these in the States of course. I would imagine a near rival in the US would have been the Honda/Acura Integra given the associated Honda/Rover tie-up?
You probably dont give a shit but does any of you know a method to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the password. I love any tricks you can give me
By time scort cossie came about, sierra crew had slapped rover lot daft..I had tt xr4x4,mate had sd1 3.5 twin turbo vitesse, realised after dropping him home after tumbling a lot in fields and surviving maybe it was time to grow up
It looks like some people were confused by the episode being split over three parts. I'm sure some people (like me :) ) looked at part 3 expecting to see the Tomcat review and were confused to see the classic rally report. You could try putting in-video links to each segment and/or editing the title to better reflect each individual segment's content.
Trust me, they're not, the civic chassis is scary as hell to drive fast with, but cornering and acceleration in these lightweight chassis is extremely amusing and rewarding as long as you don't hit anything as they're not designed to crash.
I always thought that was a meant to be a bit of dog did not handle well to the competition an overly powerful engine in budget car body 2k less than cossie when new, now the prices are a mile apart
My first car was a 216 coupe (1.6 Honda engine). It never missed a beat. Great car.
I have just bought a 216 sli with the honda engine plus a lot of additional Honda upgrades done by the previous owner love it!!!

The 1600 in both the Gti and Gsi where great fun and reliable.
Tiff in 1993: where's the modern traction control? Tiff ever since: where's the button to deactivate the traction control?
bbc like to kill anything British
I own a 416 GTi!!! Forever!!!!!!!
I would have one of those cars! The last great Rover! They should have made the Rover 75 coupe , with the rover v8 in it! Never mind.

Lovely car
It was, and was fine up to 150mph too. I have covered a lot of ground on european motorways cruising at high speed, where conditions allowed.

Undercover rocket of a car!
Probably more of a 2wd sierra cossie rival than the escort cos.
No details of the Rover on DVLA website, so must have been scrapped 8-(
The Rover 220 Tomcat as some used to call it.
Mot ran out 2010.
Most of these cars have been broke for the T series engine to be put in mg's
Most Rovers don't make it past 15 years.
Back then we had real reviews. Today everyting is angled by money. Corruption.
How many times did he say 'too fast'??
I like Tiff and I'm also gay and think your comment is hilarious.
I can't imagine that the Rover, based on the '88 Civic chassis, was very confidence inspiring at 130.

The suspension is Rover-designed. The structure may be Honda, but it’s much more stable than a Civic due to a wholly different suspension system.
