Personally, my problem is that the crew behind the remake don't understand the source material (and probably even hate it, considering they went out of their way to talk about how their new version is an improvement). Ariel saving herself instead of Eric nullifies the point of Triton going "oh, yes, you're right, not all humans suck". Triton wasn't scary at all (I watched Vicky Christina Barcelona and trust me, this man CAN be scary and intimidating), and Ursula felt watered down as hell. Making humans hate merpeople sort of proves Triton's point when he should be a paranoid widower. Also, they made original characters from the sisters, which begs the question as to why they couldn't make an original character for Halle Bailey. The dresses sucked and I'm not buying the historical accuracy excuse cuz a white prince being the adoptive child to a black queen would've been illegitimate because he doesn't look like her. Plus, historical accuracy isn't something people watch disney movies for. What's even more disappointing is that they could have either made a spin off about Sebastian's life in Trinidad and give him a mermaid bestie or make a new animated movie and have Halle voice and sing for the main character (because a live action movie would imply that they'd have had to pay her royalties, while a cartoon would not have had that problem). What you say is nothing directly stated, but rather an interpretation, and it makes sense and is lovely. I've read similar thoughts also in some comments. But in the Little Mermaid Broadway musical, Ariel also defeated Ursula directly. They just took it from there - it has been for years on stage - and mixed it up with the cinematography of the old movie. Well, perhaps then they should have rather thought of more creativity than just such a flip...
While not disrespect to the Actors and I know they tried, this is Another Pointless Disney Remake that doesn’t feel or captures what makes the Original Great and Changes A lot of Things like Ariel not showing Emotion or feel the Romance and she steals the Achievement from Eric, Sebastian, Flounder, and Scudel as Ariel does everything and makes her Boring and the Songs are Soulless, I’m sticking with the Original, the Sequel, and the Prequel.
Funny story from when this movie came out. I went to my nearby AMC with my mom, sister, and her friends. But while everyone else went to go see The Little Mermaid remake, I got to go see an actual good movie with Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse. I will always remember that experience when thinking about this movie from now on.
I honnestly didn't hate it. but then again, I did not have high hopes. 100% agree she can sing, but a cardboard cut out has more acting range. is it worth seeing to have your own opinion? yes! absolutely!. but at the cinemas? thats for you (the viewer) to decide.
I’m not a fan of the live action remakes with the exception of Lady and the Tramp and the Jungle Book. I actually didn’t mind these two films (even though there are obvious changes that were made in Lady and the Tramp).

Everything else is either mid or just plain bad.
I haven't seen the live action movie but I also no desires in seeing because my brain had been infected with way too much modren media and in general the modren world..plus I got nothing against Awkwafina as a person despite her terrible song in the movie at the end of the day she's just doing her her job so the hate is a little too much for someone just doing there job and I love how she played Ms. Tarantula in DreamWorks The Bad Guys as she's my favourite despite my fear of spiders..but other than that if Disney keep this up then Universal / DreamWorks / Paramount / Sony will be the new kings of animation..which is ironic considering that Disney as a company focused so much on live action movies or Marvel and Star Wars that they forgotten they are a animation studio
Doesn't change the fact that she doesn't know Eric any more than her father does - making her statement ridiculous/ignorant. She assumes that humans aren't all bad based on their inventions/how handsome Eric is/how he interacts with his crew/Max - which isn't much to go on.
@@madamefluffy4788 in the tv series she saw Eric free a dolphin also isnt it better to think not all humans are evil then be prejudiced on one species? Remember what Shining Armor said " There's no such thing as a nice Changeling " that would also apply to humans too
@@madamefluffy4788 To be fair, the original Little Mermaid's story wasnt the most logical. Then again, this had a traditional fairy tale narrative, focusing more on the simplicity and emotions than it is on the logic (like Snow White). But, while Snow White in the original animated film was a simple wide eyed (and 1 dimentional) dreamer, which fits with its simple narrative, Ariel in the original animated film felt more real but she was doing all sorts of nonsensical and illogical stuff in her story (like what you'd expect in a traditional fairy tale narrative) thus creating a bunch of misguided comments like Ariel being a 1 dimentional character because she just wants a man (like Snow White), Ariel being a whiney brat, Ariel being a boy obsessed stalker, Ariel being an idiot, Ariel being spoiled, ungrateful, and selfish, Ariel being a stupid jerk, ect. It wasn't until later Disney films like Beauty and the Beast and Frozen where they're based on fairytales but they have a modern edge because unlike the Little Mermaid, logic takes the front row and plays a bigger role in the narrative while being simple but also deep and complex.
I LOVE THE ORIGINAL, I am a fan AND I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE REMAKE, they made my man Eric completely useless just so Ariel can be OP and can have all the spotlight, and murder her OWN KIN and Auntie Ursula, I have nothing against girl boss but Original Ariel is already girl boss anyways there's no need to make the other characters useless and take other's spotlight just so she could shine even more. THE VISUALS ARE GARBAGE, THE ACTING IS MEDIOCRE, ARIEL'S EXPRESSIONS ARE TOO DRY, THE SONGS FOR ME ARE UNDERWHELMING except scuttlebutt that is overwhelming and earrape. THE CHANGES MADE NO ABSOLUTE SENSE and ONLY DESTROYED THE MOVIE.
The originals were made for all, the remakes are made for a bitter sub-sect, their blind followers, and all of the current attempts to further classify and divide everyone.
I'm part African-American and I think this entire film is a HUGE insult to those who loved the original. Those who were involved in this remake (the writers, casting and director) should be FIRED. Sadly....we live in clown world. Out of all the princesses, Ariel got it the worst.

Forget about the obvious race bait, this forced soul singing is so damn annoying, way too ruin on of my fav. disney songs. I honestly though I was the only one who hated it cause no one mentioned it. SO thank you so freakin much!
I can say that the Scuttle butt rap is not as bad and annoying in English as it is dubbed in Finnish. Although in Finland, the biggest uproar about this remake of The Little Mermaid was that they castrated Ursula by making the witch too kind and besides that the high K12 age limit, which is why this movie is completely prohibited for children under the age of 9 in Finland. But maybe it's better that now the youngest kids don't have to hear that rap about Scuttle's butt.
There is no need for a rap song in the Little Mermaid. A waste of Lin Manuel and Alan Menkens talents, someone needed to remove that from the final cut.
There are many upcoming Disney live-action remakes of classic animated films like Moana, Lilo & Stitch, Hercules, Bambi, and many others (like The Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, The Aristocats, and Hunchback.) Also, the bad news is that Disney will do some new live-action remakes of The Black Cauldron and The Princess and the Frog. 😐😐😐
What you say is true but when you said we should have original stories and characters instead of rewriting well-established characters and stories that’s true. But, it’s different for superhero franchises such as Marvel and DC because they have lots of characters of color who are either yet to be adapted outside the comics or have not been seen outside the comics for a while now. Examples are Luke Cage (a black hero with the power of invulnerability), Jubilee (a Chinese hero who has the power to make fireworks, say what you want, she may be an annoying, bratty teen but she’s kind of a cute kid), Sam Alexander (a part Hispanic teen who became a nova and HE’S SO PRECOCIOUS), Red Locust (a Hispanic Pym hero who has potential, I want to see her in the MCU as Hope Van Dyne’s apprentice), the Agents of Atlas (a team of super cool Asian superheroes, they have lots of potential to lead epic stories. And one of the members, I am actually worried about, Crescent, she’s one of the few child supes in Marvel and children characters are very hard to write, so, she could be annoying as all heck when adapted outside the comics, anyway, Marvel can go two routes with her, the Moongirl route where they age her up to a teenager (that would make for interesting stories) or keep her a little kid, I just hope they write her where she’s not annoying), Chimera (I can’t speak for her yet because she’s Marvel’s newest hero, she’s only been around since September and while she’s Hispanic and her powers are basically the Human Torch’s and her backstory is just Rapunzel’s, she’s super cool and she’s better than their last attempt at making new heroes, the New Warriors 2020, who, I remember they were poorly designed and they felt like they were not yet finished, but the public threw a tantrum about them so Marvel pulled them away, seemingly forever. But Chimera was just Marvel apologizing for their most recent mistakes and I would love to see her in the future, even if she just appeared for one second in Avengers: Secret Wars, but I’ll let her slide because she’s still way too new to be adapted, I’ll give her 5 years, that’s how long it took Miles), etc. I can’t speak for DC because I am not a DC fan, I am a Marvel fan! My point is that Marvel and DC have a vast catalogue of characters and lots of them are both PoCs and have been around for decades (heck, some of them even fell into obscurity, like, Tarantula, a Hispanic hero who, like the Punisher and Deadpool relies on killing the baddies instead of locking them away, is a very smart biologist and seems like a good partner for Tony Stark) yet, they go unused or have not been adapted yet. So, Marvel and DC should be making shows about them instead of race swapping some of their well-established heroes (they’ve done it a little recently), maybe they’ll give those heroes and villains the publicity they rightfully deserve, they’re all so cool, yet, they got wrongfully swept under the rug.
Yeah, I skipped this movie because I know it was going to be bad, if I want to watch something, that would be Ruby Gillman and that movie deserves more and more attention.
Thank you for this review. Definitely wish many elements were better. And I wish Ariel would have been more joyful. I mean the moment before Under the Sea, all she was joyfully talking about was the fireworks and the ship, and not Eric. Not how kind, similar, and maybe handsome he was?
Well, the writers claimed they "fixed Ariel by making her NOT defined by needing a man" because people complain that "Ariel is shallow because she went through all this trouble just to get a man" because it's "sexist" (which we all agree and know is not true) according to feminists, liberals, and female journalists.
Saw it and it Didn't matter who played Ariel, this Movie was Soulless, the Music was Terrible and 90% of the Original Dialog from the original was cut. Which meant loads of unfamiliar Dialog in its place. No thanks I have the 1989 film. And don't even get me started on Melissa McCarthy, She legit Sounded Like she was Drunk. Both her spoken and singing parts. I'll never watch this movie Ever again.

But in the Little Mermaid Broadway musical, Ariel also defeated Ursula directly. They just took it from there - it has been for years on stage - and mixed it up with the cinematography of the old movie. Well, perhaps then they should have rather thought of more creativity than just such a flip...
Critics think this is better than the Mario movie?
I will say one thing for the remake. I will not watch it but it is making me want to go watch the original
I hate how the creatures look. Everytime i see them i do the flapjack scream every time i see them.
I’m not a fan of the live action remakes with the exception of Lady and the Tramp and the Jungle Book. I actually didn’t mind these two films (even though there are obvious changes that were made in Lady and the Tramp).
What changes exactly?
@@itsblitz4437 darling is black in early 1920s era with a white john dear, the cats aren't Siamese. and a few dogs are gender swapped. that's a few i remember
The only disney remakes that are actually good are Cinderella and The Jungle Book. That's it. These films aren't mid or pointless, they have actual stories beyond the films they're based off and they're fun. I'd recommend these films for a good watch. Everything else is either mid or just plain bad.
Yes Cinderella was great!
Disney awfulness shows here.
Likewise!
same on ms spider hope they make more
What has Disney Today Have done to poor Ariel?
What was Awkwafina even doing in that song? God damn. Cringiest thing Disney has made thus far.
To be fair that oh " You dont even know him " Triton thinks all humans are evil while Airel is willinly to see the good in them
Also tbf, 16 is considered legal in some countries which makes her statement "I'm not a child anymore" somewhat valid but not exactly correct.
Do you like dreamworks ?
Also, have you heard news of their upcoming movie "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" ?
they said its for the kids buuuut whos got they money the adults that watched as a kid. mario was my childhood you bet i wanted to watch it
Oh my gosh, soras singing. I'm Crying from Nostalgia! 😢❤ His laughing is soooo lovely.
3:54 whats that UA-camrs name? I wanna subscribe to him.
@@KristinHTF Thanks.
Too bad hunchback is getting the same treatment
I saw it, i prefer the original
True
I agree with you they sure never did Race swap what happens if Tiana was race swap from white woman everyone would burn Disney
What is you opinion on Cars on the road
The originals were made for all, the remakes are made for a bitter sub-sect, their blind followers, and all of the current attempts to further classify and divide everyone.
I'm part African-American and I think this entire film is a HUGE insult to those who loved the original. Those who were involved in this remake (the writers, casting and director) should be FIRED. Sadly....we live in clown world. Out of all the princesses, Ariel got it the worst.
I don't like poeple blackwashing european fairy tail characters is disrespectful to europe and I am Danish in europe.
P.S The Little Mermaid is from Denmark 🇩🇰 and on UA-cam you can find The Anime The Little Mermaid from 1975 it respekt Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale.
I didn’t even watch this film
Same
6:46 DAMN FREAKIN THAAAAANK YOU! Finally! this what was bothering me the most in the first trailer.
Wait.
The whole rap was about *Scuttle's butt?!*
@@ZirconiaGacha the song is called scuttle butt
@@comradekitty3759 ...Oh. I haven't seen the movie, I wouldn't know.
There is no need for a rap song in the Little Mermaid.
A waste of Lin Manuel and Alan Menkens talents, someone needed to remove that from the final cut.
i love the little mermaid 1989 moive
The fact that it's a bad movie has nothing to do with the fact that the actress is black. It's just a bad movie
Exactly
Awkwifiina is a good actor but I prefer she did not sing in a musical
There are many upcoming Disney live-action remakes of classic animated films like Moana, Lilo & Stitch, Hercules, Bambi, and many others (like The Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, The Aristocats, and Hunchback.)
Also, the bad news is that Disney will do some new live-action remakes of The Black Cauldron and The Princess and the Frog. 😐😐😐
UGH! No not the Aristocats!
So, Marvel and DC should be making shows about them instead of race swapping some of their well-established heroes (they’ve done it a little recently), maybe they’ll give those heroes and villains the publicity they rightfully deserve, they’re all so cool, yet, they got wrongfully swept under the rug.
this feels like another bland as hell remake from Disney Thanks I HATE It
16 years old is okey dokey in europe and japan and The Little Mermaid fairy tail 🇩🇰 is from Denmark in scandinavia europe 😅
I'm just sick of disney at this point.
Nice Video Christian
The old The Little Mermaid movie
Disney why?
Dont forget they are watching it 3 and 4 times smh
What up Christian how you been from that awful Mindy Kaling Velma
Hey Christian can you do reviews a Peter Pan and Wendy Please
The movie is okay
Yes is ok. But definitely not a masterpiece
Tru
Saw it and it Didn't matter who played Ariel, this Movie was Soulless, the Music was Terrible and 90% of the Original Dialog from the original was cut. Which meant loads of unfamiliar Dialog in its place. No thanks I have the 1989 film. And don't even get me started on Melissa McCarthy, She legit Sounded Like she was Drunk. Both her spoken and singing parts. I'll never watch this movie Ever again.
as an adoptee I felt insulted when they used the adoption trope just becauset hey had to justify eric being ehite because being a biologival white princess would have screamed colonialism...like realle ,Eric adopted?
like ,please don't use the adoption trope just because you are trying to justify race after you raceswapped all the other characters
also,as ana doptee it made be chuckle the idea a adoptee of a different race was the heir of the throne and everyone was ok XD
Oh GOD That Rap is terrible
Nice video.
Remakes sucks now
Look I just wanted an original mermaid character also the cgi is god awful flounder scares me
I live in a timeline where the Kingdom Hearts version of under the sea doesn't make me cringe as much, remember folks there will always be something worse than pure garbage.
The worst movie if 2023
I loved the original. It was fun. I can think of better things to do than to go see this pathetic Woke Disney offering.
Such as watching the original movie
And subscribed.
I be happy if The Black Mermaid bomb 💣 because it should never be made. I love The Little Mermaid and Ariel. but I don't like The Black Mermaid at all.
Disney woke company 🙄 now
