Blind Melon is one of the most underrated bands from the 90's. For a whole year back in the day I lived in a house where my friend and I would spend hours just painting and listening to music. We'd paint till 4am or later every night for a year and Blind Melon's albums always found a way into the cd player! Every song on that album is amazing =)
I believe this song is speaking about the fragility of life… when he is speaking about wanting the rocking chair out because its no longer needed… i believe that to be an aging relative died… and the bowl of bitter beans being their “soup”….
Shannon was very depressed. He didn't get the chance to pull the trigger on himself (which is what he meant) because he killed himself with heroin when he was 27 years old. But he wrote some very uplifting music in his time for what it's worth. Stuff that made people like me happier, so I'll always give him his props for that.
You guys should absolutely watch the documentary about Shannon called “all I can say” It has footage of him finding out about Kurt Cobains suicide and then recording this song shortly thereafter.

This song was about Kurt Cobain's suicide. Tragically, Blind Melon's lead singer himself passed away, a year and some months after Kurt's death.
