As an artist and art teacher myself, the difference in these two materials are not properly “explained” in this video. (And I understand that perhaps it’s not an educational video rather visual.) These pastels have different binders. Soft pastels will have a more chalk like texture making it easier to blend but that doesn’t mean oil is harder to blend. Also, the type of paper needed for soft pastels need to be more textured to “hold” the soft pastels while oils can be used on just about any paper. So while this video helps show some differences, it’s not comparing the full properties on each equally.
I’ve only used oil pastels but I love the quality and vibrancy of soft pastels. My question is how do you know where place your so the colors don’t smear. I always mess up my work because I color get dragged cross the paper. Or my other issue is fingers being covered in colors so it doesn’t blend well.
I feel like this video is unfair to the oil pastels. There is not enough coverage of the color. It's an unfair comparison. I love using both and I can get better color saturation than what is shown in this video. The artwork is beautiful.
