Tolkien read a lot, he referenced a lot of mythology and linguistic studies as well as his Catholic faith- when you really see the references he wasn’t that out there. He just has the incredible ability to work and tinker with story for very long- an avidly studious person. There is nothing in numerous accounts of him that suggests drugs, more an aversion to this sort of libertine behaviour.
