  • Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro walk into a bar... and somehow avert World War III. Cody takes a look at this game of Cold War suspense from Ultra Pro and Jolly Roger Games. Does it have him seeing red? Let's find out.

just played it. I think fans of twilight struggle, like me, should own both this and twilight struggle. my wife will play this with me... enough said haha

Love both games, however I really like the fact that this has no dice. Great review!

I couldn't agree more, this game has really impressed me. Great amount of tension and thought for a short game which really pulls you in to the theme.

I just bought this, along with 13 Minutes, because apparently I'm not busy enough trying to learn Atlantic Chase.

Great review Cody. I actually just finished watching Jeremy "World at War" Isaacs' series on the Cold War and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I'm definitely interested in this game.

+Richard Yasi I love the history that this game offers. I think you'll get a kick out of it.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on Watergate whenever you get a chance to review this title (and your thoughts on how it compares against 13 Days for prospective buyers). Great review of 13 Days, incidentally.

Thank you. I'd like to hit Watergate, but it all comes down to wether or not I can get a review copy. Hopefully I can.

Yeah, I'd be interested in hearing Cody's perspective on Watergate as well I'm currently torn between Watergate and 13 days. Did you end up getting one (or both) of these? If you ended up playing both, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on how they compare. Thanks.

@@dimetronome For what it's worth, I opted to purchase Watergate, and found it enjoyable, though it isn't a title that comes into heavy play anymore. Solid game, but after 4~ plays my partner was happy to move on.
I'll likely hold onto it for occasional plays, but 13 Days might have more meat on it? Hard to say.

@@Anarchosyn Thanks for your response. I appreciate it. Your feedback sounds similar to what I've been reading. Many of the comments I've seen comparing the two games seem to suggest that 13 Days is more strategy-based and less luck-based than Watergate, which would make 13 Days less repetitive and improve its replayability if that's true (but, on the other hand, Watergate has a much higher ranking on BGG than 13 Days). I'm not sure yet, but I'll probably just go ahead and get both anyway.

@@dimetronome To be completely clear: I personally never had any issues with Watergate. The theme wasn't appealing, but nor was it off-putting, which I share only to say I went into it focused more on the gameplay than anything else. It's fine. Even good-to-great for two player. I wouldn't even say our games necessarily felt samey, at least I never thought "I did this the same before, didn't I?" - but, in the end of the day, it just didn't have enough alternative paths to victory to satisfy our tastes.
The asymmetry helps, but only a bit.

Thanks Cody. Okay, well, the reviews look like this game is one we need to try and carry. I'm predisposed to liking games like this anyway as I've always been a big reader of history. You know it might be interesting to do a book review and game review series with games like this. For example, this game with a recent book One Minute to Midnight. Tie the book and game together in one review. Anyway, thanks again for another well done, well thought out review.

I've done recommended reading on some of my game reviews before. I own Dobbs' "One Minute to Midnight" but have not read it yet.

Oh that's just great! I guess I will be working some more overtime! Another awesome game to have to drag my behind to the game store to get-or get online. So what I'm getting here is 2-3 hours=Twilight Struggle, 45 minutes=13 Days. I think I will be getting 13 days first, much easier to talk some one in to 45 min. as opposed to 2-3 hours. Twilight Struggle is still on my list of games to get however. weird bit at the end there putting stickers on blocks. What game was that for? I just got done stickering some blocks for my Holdfast:Korea and Holdfast:Russia games(awesome, check em out-low piece density wargames, and beautifully simplistic system, only 8 page rule book)Awesome job as always Cody!If your ever in the Milwaukee area, give me a line, I'll buy ya a drink and we can talk WWII generals or battles or 20th century politics and play some cool games.

+redblackmonkey Sounds like fun, sir. I believe there was stickering Columbia Games' Victory in Europe. Thank you!

Whoa! Was that a Simpsons reference at the end there? Chowdair (in French accent). It's Chowda (in Boston accent)

I don't think you've been watching the channel enough. I like many games, that is true. But there are many I've reviewed that I think are just okay, and many that I've downright hated.
