Enjoyed this video and was shocked to hear at the end I’d won the competition! I’ll send my details through to you via email. Cheers!
Congratulations and thank you cool dude. I have emailed you. It may have gone to your junk folder. Stay cool.
@@cdwc yes got your email thanks, sent my address
For some weird reason it has not come through. Could you send it to cooldudeswalkingclub@gmail.com . Thanks cool dude.
@@cdwc done :)
@@cdwc just wanted to say thank you for the awesome prizes. They arrived today and are great. I read the spotter’s handbook with my daughter and we had a lot of fun, thought she said it was a bit weird. So result basically. The badges will go on my bag and I’ll take a snap for #cooldudespotters on my next walk. Cheers!
An average of 2.8mph is an impressive stat Marek, you're definitely improving.
My favourite journey book would be Famous Five Go Off In A Caravan, by Enid Blyton.
I once bought the first Famous Five for my niece at Christmas. I had never read it before. I started reading it to her over Christmas and when I left to go back to London I secretly bought it on my Kindle so I could find out what happened. I was about 38.
Bill Bryson - A Walk in the woods is a delightful slow easy paced trot through the Appalachian Trail.
I tried to read a Bill Bryson once but didn't get on with it. I should try again.
Hilarious film now made 😃 it's on Netflix etc
Great video. I loved the wood sculpture. Have a great day 😀
Thanks cool dude.
McCarthys Bar by Pete McCarthy is my favourite it tells of his travels around Ireland and its bars !
I remember seeing this all the time. I should give it a read.
My favorite Theroux book is “The Happy Isles Of Oceania”. One of only a handful of books I’ve reread four times, as of today. Stay cool!
I will put that on my list cool dude.
@@cdwc Warning: You may not be able to put it down once you begin…clear your calendar. 😏
Old Patagonia Express. From Boston to Patagonia -- not walking, though!
my favourite books about a journey are The Day of Creation by J.G. Ballard and Otherland by Tad Williams
I read 'Otherland' about 20 years ago I think, after I finished his Dragonbone Chair trilogy. I can't remember what happened.
For a story about a journey you can't forget Lord of the Rings! But when I was younger, I loved "We Didn't Mean To Go To Sea" by Arthur Ransome.
I did enjoy Swallows and Amazons when I was younger. Will check this out.
The Phantom Tollbooth is a wonderful little book. I'll need to re-read it now.
One of the first books I read and was properly into. I remember it being called "The Phantom Tollbooth Keeper" though. Is this a Mandela Effect thing?
It was always the Phantom Tollbooth I think.
Definitely worth keeping it in the library.
The rush for the bus was hilarious! "Look how red I am... I'll give you the details for the walk once I've calmed down a bit!" I recently enjoyed Simon Reeve's book "Step by step" - he's a modern day explorer - has done trips where he follow the equator or tropic lines - came across as a great storyteller and good guy.
I've seen some of his TV stuff and he comes across really well. I will look them up.
I like Alan Garner's books which have a strong connection to the countryside, even if they are for children or 'young adults'. The Owl Service is really good.
I have not heard of him. Will put him on my list. A lot of the young adult books are the best ones I find. I don't understand the weird classification of anything slightly mystical or otherworldly as 'young adult'.
Elidor is fantastic.
Learnt how to tackle a new electric fence! Nice one!
Thanks cool dude.
I liked Tim Moore's Another Fine Mess where he travels Atlantic to Pacific Coast in a Model T Ford. I quite like his writing generally but I enjoyed this one the most.
Cool man will check it out.
I was going to suggest that too. Great choice. Tim Moore’s other classic is ‘The Cyclist Who Went Out In The Cold’ where he rides a Soviet boneshaker around the Iron Curtain former borders from north (Finland) to south (Bulgaria)
Great windmill at Bembridge!
Hi cool dude my fav book of journeys when I was younger was 80 days around the world, just loved the excitement of adventure
Nice one Marek. Lovely bird song throughout.
I couldn't get any bird close ups in this one. I tried!
@@cdwc I appreciate the effort and the birdsong alone satisfies me. Hahaha
Best kids journey book has to be Stig of the Dump. For adults, so many....Round Ireland With A Fridge is genius.
I remember the Stig of the Dump TV series. I started watching the film of Round Ireland with A Fridge once. It was one of the worst things I have ever seen.
@@cdwc The Stig book was magical when I was a kid, the, the TV series couldn't do it justice..... they made a film of Round Ireland With a Fridge? Dear lord....
3:49 Oh my God, I would've walked straight into that electric fence. 😬
I don't know if it's strictly a 'journey' - more getting lost in the woods - but I love, love, love The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King. And all of the Gary Paulsen books about being lost in the wilderness. And Dark Summer by Ali Sparkes, which is a kids' book but it's about a boy who gets lost in the Wookey Hole caves and it's amazing. 👍 I think I just really like books about people getting lost. 🤣
I have not ready any of those. Stephen King can either be amazing or awful. I think my favourites of his are 11/22/63, The Stand and Hearts of Atlantis, plus loads of the Bachman short stories.
I must say, my daughter and I have thoroughly enjoyed your brother's Podkin One-Ear books a lot as well. If anyone is thinking of needing gift ideas for a child look no further (after your Pooman cards purchases of course) 😉
** These are the genuine opinions of the author. Not sponsored in any way shape or form. They are actually just really good books! **
Thanks cool dude. I will tell him, he will be pleased.
A great video Cool Dude (even though it did rain on you!). I cant stand the rain or hailstones when out cycling cos my cycling glasses fog up & I cant see the potholes! 😄
The books that I'd recommend are 'Down & Out in Paris & London' by George Orwell. George Orwell's vivid memoir of his time living among the desperately poor & destitute in Paris & London. A very moving journey of the underworld of society.
Another favourite has to be 'The Famous 5 go Adventuring Again!
Stay Safe & Stay Cool, Cool Dude! 🌞☔🚴♀️🚶♀️
I've read 'Down & Out in Paris & London' and agree it is excellent.
Hope the weather gets better for your cycling cool dude.
The sun will be back from Tuesday onwards, fantastic!
Hysterical. Council bar stewards, closing that path.
It was sabotage!
The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry are great travel books. Round Ireland with a fridge, is interesting Marek 😂
I have read all of those cool dude. I like the Hobbit and the Narnia stuff, but was not that impressed by the Harold Fry or that Round Ireland with a fridge. There is a film of the latter which might be the worst film of all time.
@@cdwc Is there? I don't think I'll bother watching it 😂
@@neilcam I really enjoyed it, but each to their own 🙂
My favorite book has always been Watership Down. Read it as a kid and no movie or anything else had completely transported me into that world so beautifully. I couldn't put it down except to go pee and drink.
My favorite book is The Martian. The journey across Mars is a lot longer and difficult than shown in the movie.
An excellent book. I bought on Amazon for 50p before it became famous. The only time in my life I have been ahead of everyone else.
Enjoy watching walking videos on Isle of Wight im.in ryde.. you should wak over too Seaview Farm past golf course down over beeper and over too the downs Newport ect.
Nice one dude. Will look that one up. Thank you.
'Roadside Picnic' by the Strugatsky brothers is one of my favourite 'journey' books. The bulk of the (short) novel is leading up to/planning the journey. It's about hazardous alien visitation sites and stuff, so maybe a bit nerdy for a jock like yourself.
A JOCK! I have not heard of that book. I will check it out.
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
That's a journey through space, time and reality.
First book I ever read.
Yes I read it a long long time ago and really enjoyed it.
Hey Marek ! 😃👍 Another great video, really enjoyed that one. It had everything.... Comedy, history, suspense, brilliant. I never knew that the Krays were in Parkhurst. Is it still called Parkhurst? I drove from Bembridge to Cowes last year and went past "Isle Of Wight Prison". Is this the same place? Or is there more than one Prison? The adventure book I really enjoyed was the Autobiography of Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Amazing read. Thanks for the great videos, stay cool dude ! Matt - Solihull 😁👍
I think all the three prisons - Albany, Camp Hill and Parkhurst got amalgamated under one name a few years ago. Stay cool dude.
Ah Marek, your videos do make me miss the Isle of Wight.
It is going to be chaos this summer down here I think.
@@cdwc I'm already mentally preparing for the inevitable 'sorry, bus full' all summer.
A walk in the woods by bill bryson is a fantastic book
I have ordered a copy on eBay. A couple of people have suggested it. Hope you've got some good summer trails planned Daz.
Mutant downunder was a good travel book :-)
Is that 'Mutant Message Down Under'? I was trying to find it.
Waterlog by Roger Deakin is great, I like how it makes you contemplate jumping in every pond you see.
I thought this was the cinematographer first of all then I remembered he is 'Deakins', probably still likes swimming though.
@@cdwc Yeah I bet he does and they both have (or had) awesome hair!
Keep an eye out for the Wessex Ridgeway Boys, walking from St Helens on 15th March as we start our anti clock wise circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight. S
Maybe we will see you along the way.
I've been watching your videos.
Good luck cool dudes.
Great to see Southern Vectis are moving with the times, albeit at a glacial pace!
I love "Traversa" by Fran Sandham - a journey across Africa with lots of details about blisters.
I just did the Serpent Trail, without any blisters! This must be a world record.
Dude read Soldier I. Its an autobiography from one of the top SAS. Loads of journeys in it. It is also a brilliant read. Made me want to join the army after reading it... luckily for me my broken back won't let me join.
Fun fact- squirrels forget about 80% of their stashes. So essentially squirrels plant trees.
Excellent Squirrel fact. I have seen the squirrel burying things in my garden.
I'll look up that SAS book, I am probably still young enough to join.
@@cdwc haha yes man go join the SAS and upload the vlog of the process.
Duuude make a tiny wee arrow sign for the squirrel saying "nuts burried here" and put it in your garden next to the stash. Let's help the wee fellow out
Looked to me that the bus ride had better views than the walk did =-) . i Enjoy your vids and have visited the island before ( and will do later this year ) , Keep up the good work and take care =-)
Enjoy your trip to the island dude.
Newport bus station and Church Litten can be seriously scary places. Much more dangerous than Parkhurst and potential prisoner escapes
I would probably agree with you there cool dude.
My favourite book ( is about a journey) is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. I love your channel Marek, keep up the good work 😎👍
I just read "Free Country: A Penniless Adventure the Length of Britain" about a couple of guys that try cycling from Lands End to John O Groats. They start off in a pair of pants and have to rely on the kindness of strangers to get them to their destination. Well written and pretty funny too!
Ha. I once pitched a TV show called 'Just my Pants' about two comedians being dropped off in Romania in just their pants. I didn't realise it had already been done.
@@cdwc I'd watch it!
Favourite journey book: A Time of Gifts by Patrick Leigh Fermor. Brilliant travel memoir of his walk from Holland to Constantinople in the 1930s. Possibly my favourite book of all time.
I have put this on my list. It looks a bit like the excellent 'As I walked out one Midsummer Morning' by Laurie Lee.
New subscriber, love the channel! Stay cool mate
Welcome and thanks dude.
i love the added jeopardy - will Marek catch the bus or miss the bus. This walk looks much nicer than last weeks around Elstree. Best book about journeys - A to Z of France 2014, I don't think you can get it in the shops any more, which is strange, cos there were loads when I bought it.
All the roads in France have been destroyed.
Funny appearance on the first team on bbc
I would recommend Homer's Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid. Read both as a teenager and I still think about them often. Epic journeys in both books.
I had the Iliad when I was young but never read more than the first few pages. I should try the Odyssey as I love the Greek Myths.
The land of far beyond.
I have not read that one. Is it like 'The Magic Faraway Tree'?
@@cdwc I don’t know what the magic faraway tree is about but it was written by Enid Blyton and is about some children who travel to the city of happiness but on the way have to pass the city of turmoil with horrible characters etc. They find peace and happy times in the end. 😌
Evening. 😊👍
I love Clan of the Cave Bears series. Mammoth Hunters is great.
I was 7 away from winning. Closest yet 😊👍
Not heard of these books. I will put them on my list cool dude.
Books.. from Peggy says!! Stephen Reynolds, just off for a walk,
Walk sleep repeat and The nomad on suite are 3 fabulous reads
Thanks cool dudes.
Definitely on my list now, thanks 👍🏼
Nice one dude.
This video made my day! Thanks, friend.
Thanks Anne. Hope things are going well cool dude.
Ransdom book from me regarding journeys would be `The Undead` series by RR Haywood.
Everyone loves a zombie Apocalypse. I thought it was impossible to make a bad zombie film until I started watching 'Army of the Dead.'
Between the Stops by Sandi Toksvig the history of every stop along the route she used to ride into London
Excellent. Will check it out.
Just sent for a copy of your spotters guide, hope that will be one of my favourite travel books. Your website has become easier to use.
This is the correct answer well done.
The Forever War is physically accurate science fiction. The characters journey across space close to speed of light and it causes some quite interesting time dilation effects.
Going to order some stuff from Amazon after clicking your book links.
Nice one cool dude. I will check out that book.
Such a beautiful day and such lush countryside. Thanks for the shirt, Nan, super cool dude! First book I read about a journey was the Hobbit, loved it. Another cracking video, thank you!
Yes I liked the Hobbit too. I seemed to be always rereading the first chapter.
Stephen Kings the body novella has it all great adventure and a dead body maybe you should add dead bodies to the spotters hand book
Dead bodies was in an early draft of a handbook. Then I thought if you actually found a dead body, ticking it off for three points would probably be the last thing on your mind.
Mrs P’s Journey true story about Phylis Pearsall the woman who walked, created and mapped the London A-Z....incredible must read.
Wish your walk vids were longer. Thank you.
Longer videos!!! They already take me about three days to make. Will check out Phyllis Pearsall.
Another fantastic video - thanks Marek. I do look forward to these!! My favourite travel book has to be Michael Palin's Around the world in 80 days (although to sound more cultured I should probably have said the Jules Verne version!) Having looked up the TV series I am delighted to say that it's currently on iPlayer so I'm enjoying that at the moment too!!
I started watching it again too! I love it. I remember watching it and Pole to Pole when it first came out.
Great video, love the giant red squirrel, squirrels are cool
Wow that was close almost missing the bus...another thoroughly enjoyable walk Marek, I’ll try the buddy thing as I’m off on Wednesday night.
The badges arrived. I posted a thank you on your channel. Stay cool Jag.
@@cdwc thanks Marek glad they arrived.
Three Men in a Boat - Jerome K Jerome, American Interior - Gruff Rhys, War of the Worlds - H.G Wells, Superman Grounded - J Michael Straczynski, America Unchained - Dave Gorman, and I want to say the Dark Tower books by Stephen King, but that's pretty long winded and not all of them are good it starts great but doesn't hold.
I've read 'The Time Machine' and really enjoyed it so I should try 'War of the Worlds'.
@@cdwc An instant favourite for me when I read it.
Another very cool and, occasionally suspenseful, video. That electric fence bit looked rather scary to negotiate and how did you manage to negotiate the taped-off footpath at 8:53?
My favourite journey book(s) are still the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. First read them 40years ago!
I also recall the Parkhurst jailbreak as we’d just moved into our house in Soton. I spent the whole night peeking through windows looking out for baddies in case they tried to break in.
I had to turn back and try another route and jump over the gate.
I enjoyed the Hitchhikers guide but haven't read them for about 30 years.
These are a little on the nose but, Wild by Cheryl Strayed and A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson are both excellent, in different ways. They're about walking the two massive trails on each coast of America.
I should read Wild at some point. I watched a bit of the film. It's the PCT and the Appalachian Trail I think.
Cool video
Thanks cool dude.
Rewatching Jan ‘24
Got to be Lord of the Rings hasn't it? By the way Marik, minus one spotters point for not spotting that hole! 😁
I like Lord of the Rings, I just don't absolutely love it.
If no one has already mentioned it, The Long Walk by Steven King under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Unsurprisingly it's a harrowing nightmare of a book, which is exactly what you want from that author. I'll also suggest Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is a tale about a journey, while also being about a book specifically used for journeys.
Yes I mentioned 'The Long Walk' in the replies below. I still think about it all the time.
@@cdwc maybe get a mate to follow you with an air pistol and if you walk slower than 3mph he/she will shoot you in the bum
Happy Birthday!
Nice one. Thanks dude.
We drove 2 hours to Oban last Christmas for our festive shop at Aldi (!!??)
Cool Dudes, I am sad to report that a Red Squirrel committed hari kari and ran in front of our car. It nearly spoilt Christmas for me. Although if it had been a turkey it would have saved us most of the trip.
Ps. Please don’t ban me for squashing a squirrel!
As a new acolyte of the Red Squirrel cult I can no longer guarantee your safety from rodents.
I've still never seen a red squirrel, you're very luck to have them in your garden. I'll have to make do with hedgehogs.
Hedgehogs are possibly even cooler than red squirrels.
cool video :) i remember you from sorry i’ve got no head!!
Wahhhheeeeeyyyyyyyy!
Another fabulous video and walk Sir, my favourite book is Haunted Chichester and beyond... by some bloke called Arron (me) more about ghosts rather than journeys but I’ve not written a book about journeys so it’ll have to do.
Cool Dude 465
I will have to do some walks from your book at some point Cool Dude.
Che guevara The motorcycle diaries
Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson both who wrote UK travel books.
Papillon by Henri Charriere is my fave journey book although it's about escaping from prison so ties in with your info about Parkhurst. Do Decathlon do Mosipants as I have been bitten quite badly in the nether regions before and I find that the mosquito repellent tends to sting a bit 'down there'? Nice yellow jacket, though it did clash with your red 'bus rush' face 😂
Someone else recommended Papillon too. Will check it out. Meanwhile I think Decathalon do everything.
Mr Finchley discovers his England
I just read a sample. It looks great, I've ordered it.
Also, 500 mile walkies
So did they have to use jumpers for goalposts after the escape?
I was actually camping as a scout with my scout friends and scout leaders when the prisoners broke out fairly near by at parkhurst and we heard they were stealing food from campsites and we heard something in our camp at night and we had to wake up and see who it was and the only thing I had to defend myself was a badminton racket but it was probably just a fox
This is an excellent story. It was genuinely pretty exciting wondering whereabouts on the island they were at the time. I reckon it was definitely the prisoners at your camp site.
I think you could start a separate channel for videos of bus journeys.
For reasons of variety I'll suggest some non-fiction travel/journey books. The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe about the space travel pioneers and the Mercury 7. A Man On The Moon by Andrew Chaikin about the Apollo missions. Are You Dave Gorman by Dave Gorman and Danny Wallace.
Not another channel! Will check out that Tom Wolfe stuff. Space travel has always horrified me. Claustrophobia in endless space.
dont forget the infamous charly bronson he spent time in parkhurst too
Mans search for meaning by Viktor E Frankl
I had not heard of this. It looks pretty heavy.
@@cdwc It is. But don’t let that put you off. It’s the most important book I’ve even read personally.
Marek have you filmed a fort walk at all ? 😎
No, I did it once and it was really busy and not that nice.
@@cdwc I’ve done a Fort walk once, on the wrong day, from the wrong beach, I got a little wet 🤣, but I was glad I did it.😎
Have you got any videos that include the former railway station at Merstone and the Red Squirrel Trail?
Yes, I think the Nunwell Trail or the Stenbury Trail one.
I don't really have any favourite books about a journey, although I have read the Hobbit, I enjoyed Stephen King's short story The Body and The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut is sort of about a journey but it is a very good book.
Those annoying dogs sounded like my annoying dog.
Sirens of Titan is an amazing book. The first Vonnegut I read. Stephen King did a brilliant short story as Richard Bachman called 'The Long Walk'. I often thing about it. It is sort of a grisly competition. I won't spoil it for you, but definitely worth a read.
Yes, it's one of my favourite books, along with Breakfast of Champions. I have read the long walk too but not in years, I must read it again at some point.
Why was Bono escaping from Parkhurst?
Why was he in Parkhurst is the question.
@@cdwc Probably part of his attempt to find whatever it was he was looking for.
Isn’t anywhere in the IoW in the middle of nowhere?🤣
so close to winning at the end :) I saw #10 as the winner which is mine but then realised you didnt click yet. Next time :)
Ha, there is always a number between one and ten there before I press the link. Apologies. One day cool dude.
The Hobbit
The Lord Of The Rings
The Long Walk (actually I can't remember if it was any good or not)
Papillon
The Long Walk is excellent. Have not read Papillon.
@@cdwc There's actually not much walking in it, mostly penal colony life with escapes here and there, often by sea. But I really enjoyed it.
I know I’m one of millillions
Oh sorry I hadn’t finished… I know I am one in millions, but still want to marry you xxx
I am not aware of any of the other millions. Stay cool.
Marek, I was wondering if you’d like a SPiS badge, seeing as I have one of yours?
👍 I’ll get your address from Frankie. I’ve just started using a bum bag as well now you trendsetter.
Yes please Jag that would be great. Thank you. I think Bum Bags are the way forward. Perfect for camera storage in bad weather.
