- As an officer of the Continental Navy of the American Revolution, John Paul Jones helped establish the traditions of courage and professionalism that the Sailors of the United States Navy today proudly maintain. John Paul was born in a humble gardener's cottage in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, went to sea as a youth, and was a merchant shipmaster by the age of twenty-one. Having taken up residence in Virginia, he volunteered early in the War of Independence to serve in his adopted country's infant navy and raised with his own hands the Continental ensign on board the flagship of the Navy's first fleet. He took the war to the enemy's homeland with daring raids along the British coast and the famous victory of the Bonhomme Richard over HMS Serapis. After the Bonhomme Richard began taking on water and fires broke out on board, the British commander asked Jones if he had struck his flag. Jones replied, "I have not yet begun to fight!" In the end, it was the British commander who surrendered..... Definition from the Biographies of Naval History, U.S. Naval History and Heritage.
I've Gotta Get This Movie on DVD. Go U.S Navy!
Willie was a good man, I hope he had a great future
I watched this because of another great leader and Naval cadet who never gave up the ship, the first book "First Down....and a Lifetime to Go...CAPTAIN AMERICA, ROGER STAUBACH....DALLAS COWBOY QB
When John Paul Jones said"I HAVE NOT YET BEGUN TO FIGHT!!"I'm sure some sailor muttered"Well,It's About Damned Time You Do!!The Damned Ship's Sinking!!".
great film, I saw this film many years ago, thanks for the upload.
@anothercarpenter ,,, i also agree... this is one of my dad's favorite movies,,, and i can watch it over and over...
Same today as yesterday, history.
I was not aware of this movie, and i watch a lot of classic films. Nice to see that JPJ's story was told. Although there are a few historical inaccuracies, no doubt for dramatic effect as in most such films, overall it is well done. The sets and the ships were awesome. I hope the film gets restored. It appears to need it. I watched the whole film. Thanks very much for posting it. JPJ has been a hero of mine since boyhood.
You too. This movie got me to join the navy. Jpj set the standards for our navy.
This film I last seen when I was 13 years old in 1960 and it fire the imagination then, and it good to watch again thank you for the upload
movie made me proud that i joined the u.s. by god navy!!!!
A Blu-Ray, please!!!!
It is really good
Catherine was smart best biz donebim the early morning
Interesting glu enough,Robert Stack was an officer in the Navy in WW2.
Bette Davis!!!
Had no idea she'd taken such a small role in a film like this.
I wonder if the Russian Navy has a ship named the Ivan Pavel Jonesovich??*
(*Russian for John Paul Jones).
Had looked it up since found out Peter Cushing played the French captain.
No He Played a UK British Captain.
good film. However, Betty Davis as a Russian queen?
While a good film depicting the life of John Paul Jones, it is however inaccurate. Franklin died in 1790 in the U.S. while Jones died in France in 1792.
Was just going to point that out
That's Hollywood for Ya.
Just a few years after his death John Adam's established a permanent navy.
Look,not all biopics are 100%accutate.
Ironically John Adam's helped establish the modern USNavy.
I love Russia
