  • Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle), a Hutu, manages the Hôtel des Mille Collines and lives a happy life with his Tutsi wife (Sophie Okonedo) and their three children. But when Hutu military forces initiate a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Tutsi minority, Paul is compelled to allow refugees to take shelter in his hotel. As the U.N. pulls out, Paul must struggle alone to protect the Tutsi refugees in the face of the escalating violence later known as the Rwandan genocide.

Just finished this movie for a high school assignment. As much as this helped me understand how awful the genocide really was, this was one of the most traumatizing movies I’ve ever watched and it makes me tear up everytime I think about it. @@CANNED_POSSUMS I taught this for many years. It had the same effect on my students. It's one of the cleverest movies ever made. I don't know if many film critics even understood half of the symbolism here e.g. The primal shower scene when Paul can't dress himself after what he has seen. The red tie symbolizes the way that the Western World has blood on its hands. Paul has always looked up to first-world countries and he acts as they do with his smart suits, shirts, and ties, etc., but ultimately, he has 'come up short' as a person, and so have they.

All that Rusesabagina wanted from this movie was to create a star status for himself, and thus continue perversely to benefit from the genocide against the Tutsi population. He was never concerned about the genocide itself. That’s why he never stops distorting it in appallingly cynical ways. He’s a crook.
Example: Just 2 years after the movie came out he gave an interview to say this: _“Most of those guys who were just on the roadblocks were Kagame people.”_ He’s talking about the roadblocks where Tutsi people were stopped, identified by their mandatory tribal cards, and then systematically killed to the very last one by *”those guys”.* Kagame of course is a person who led the struggle to stop the genocide. But Rusesabagina turns everything upside down in his endless cynicism.

*The movie:* “As the U.N. pulls out, Paul must struggle *alone* to protect the Tutsi refugees.” _(From the movie description above.)_
*The reality:* “The few troops left with UNAMIR [United Nations peacekeeping force] were able to provide some protection to about 20,000 civilians in the Amahoro *Stadium,* the Hotel des Mille Collines [aka *“Hotel Rwanda”],* the *Meridien Hotel* and the King Faisal *Hospital,* but with few personnel and a limited presence in the rest of the country they were unable to do much more.
At times, force had to be met with force. A small party of Tunisians at the Hotel des Mille Collines [aka *“Hotel Rwanda”],* along with UN military observers led by Major Victor Moigny from the Congo [Brazzaville], held off three large *attacks by Interahamwe [the genocide militia force]* as well as withstanding several bombardments.” _(From the Canadian Defence Ministry’s report.)_
The movie is fictional and *not* a representation of reality.

Before entering you would first pass the barrier of soldiers and interahamwe and when you reached the entrance of the hotel the security would ask if you have the money to pay in order to stay
Before judging the government of Rwanda first know the real testimony from people who were in this hotel and you should also know that the government is accusing him for financing terrorist.

The movie is very different from what happened in real life
Before entering you would first pass the barrier of soldiers and interahamwe and when you reached the entrance of the hotel the security would ask if you have the money to pay in order to stay
Before judging the government of Rwanda first know the real testimony from people who were in this hotel and you should also know that the government is accusing him for financing terrorist.
What I'm saying is people can be heroes in movies but be villains and criminals in real life

Was the scene they watched on the monitor real when they watched it in hotel? No, it was much much worse, you can’t unsee something like that and if you search UA-cam u can still find it but I would not recommend it, a poor man is sitting upright on the ground, a Hutu walks up and chops off his head, it rolls on the ground as the man is still sitting upright while the guy continues to swing at his head on the ground while the body part of the man raises his hands and arms around and gets struck and falls. They continue to hack at this poor man for 50 seconds as his arms move around and his head is at his feet. Most horrific thing I’ve ever seen.

so tell us the truth! What is the truth? Hutus did a genocide against tutsis. That is just a fact!

@@princess.paprika1813 To properly answer your question, the Genocide was a massive massacre that was prepared carefully by Hutu extremists who wanted to wipe an entire ethnic group. This Genocide against the Tutsi that happened in 1994 was not the first time Tutsis were being killed, it goes way beyond the 1959. To mark this, I am not saying that all Hutus are responsible for the killings, some of them were brave enough to stand against these plans and some of those paid a higher price for that as their own lives.
