The real Murphy's Law is, "If there are any two ways of doing something, and one will lead to disaster, someone will do it."
In this case, it's sounding like someone at the service providers didn't allocate enough resources, almost leading to disaster. Meanwhile, 'this here ol' redneck Cleeter' (insert media stereotype backing music) already has a redundancy plan in place ready to flip services and put the stream out for free, ensuring disaster will be avoided. That alone means the dollars are well spent by the viewers.

I work in enterprise IT and what you guys pulled off is honestly amazing for a first attempt. Most companies do a few trial runs before attempting something anywhere near this ambitious. That being said, I have a couple suggestions to make it butter-smooth next time. You already have a solid A/V issue log to work through, so I won't touch on those.
Partner with Cloudflare or another major CDN. They can completely mitigate the DDOS attacks on the website. Their CDN has nodes everywhere. That could improve quality, improve availability, provide a buffer for any small issues, and reduce bandwidth on your side as your streams scale even further.
Get an in-house race FX person. I know people that work on the systems at a horse racetrack. It's not overly complex.
Redundant internet is a lifesaver. Fiber is great, but every provider has downtime. Usually at the least opportune moment.
Redundant systems for the same reason. 2 is 1. 1 is none.
If you want, I would be willing to come down and help in any way I can. But you probably have people local (I live in AR) that are completely capable.

Came here to say pretty much the same thing. Depending how you run the paywall for content page caching might not work without some changes but a service like CloudFlare can definitely absorb the worst of it. Otherwise you're talking about load balancing web front-ends.
I have been involved with the IT side of pay-walled live streaming race events and those refresh swarms are the worst. There's nothing like being unintentionally DDoS attacked by your own fans because they just want to support you and watch the race.

Dude as a IT guy my self, really amazed what you guys pulled off for your first time. What technology is always going to be a bug or a hiccup. The only thing you can do to help the up time is have redundancy. So with that said these are my suggestions if you want more info hit me up. Not knowing you're set up so some of these you may already have implemented.
    - redundant internet (site to site Wi-Fi or mobile)
    - put a 5 min buffer on external streaming. So this way if there's a hiccup in your internet you have a buffer.
    - redundant on site and off site servers
    - set up a load balancer
    - make sure you have everybody pull the stream feed from a third party to reduce the bandwidth at the FF.
    - for scheduling I know you guys are pretty tight for scheduling but you should set up a rain date on all your events just in case.

Also in IT, and I'm not sure if the average person realizes the amount of work it is for these guys to pull this off like this! I think at the size of this operation now it might be worth to outsource this process so they don't have to stress so much about all of these moving parts lol Or maybe even set up a legit infrastructure if this is going to be a frequent need/capability

    • @robertstoker5653
      @robertstoker5653 2 роки тому +15

Also in IT here and work with a massive company that gets loads of hits daily... can agree with this. Redundancy is a big key with loads of traffic on a site... on-site servers also a good idea with a backup offsite. 2 seperate gig lines would also help a lot to have a fail over

    • @calvinnguyen1364
      @calvinnguyen1364 2 роки тому +27

Also in IT here, i'm not sure you fully know what you're talking about.
      - Redundant internet would have to be another fiber line. What's "site to site WiFi"? Do you mean a site to site VPN because that has zero applicability here. A mobile connection would choke and die spontaneously, they are nowhere near fast enough.
      -5 minute buffer, perfectly plausible.
-Redundant on site and off site server, now sure how this would help. I'm not sure how Vimeo works, but I think Cleetus might be wrong on saying his server itself was hammered. If he is using Vimeo, i'm pretty sure Vimeo is pushed the video feed by Cleetus' server and then Vimeo distributes it from there. That means, there is only one connection hitting his server (between him and Vimeo) while Vimeo is the one that has the hundreds of thousand connection.
If the distribution model above is true, then having a redundant server wouldn't do anything. Especially since it was his internet connection itself that also had a failure
      - Setting up a load balancer, what kind of load balancing would he be doing? If you're referring to load balancing his server, it sounds like getting a beefier server might be easier. I'm not honestly sure how you'd go about load balancing the server in his case. Regarding load balancing his upload between two different WAN links, i'm not sure this will help either. When you load balance traffic between two WAN links, it's typically different connections being split. To make it ELI5, lets say you have 1000 connections going outbound, the connections will cycle between WAN A and WAN B. Note, this is when you have multiple connections going on. In Cleetus' case, this is a single connection going outbound, I might be wrong but I don't think it's viable. Possible? Sure, but I sure as hell wouldn't know how
      - If you're mis-using the term load balancing rather thinking of redundancy, then that's perfectly possible. Have two WAN links set up using two separative fiber lines (doesn't have to be fiber, but I doubt anything less will be useful) connected to a firewall (or similar). When the firewall noticed WAN A SLA fails, it'll automatically divert to WAN B.

Having a wireless link back to the shop across the road could be a really good idea as long as they're using a separate provider at the shop so if there's a local or provider outage they could still be online relatively quickly.

The number one thing I’ve learned from working in the tech industry is that shit is going to fail, systems are going to crash. It’s inevitable. You guys took on a massive risk by setting up the event like you did, and holy shit Cleet idk how you get in your cars with balls that big. Some serious moves are being made on this channel. You guys are growing and evolving unlike any other channel on youtube. We, your fans and viewers, can’t put into words how much we value this transparency. You owning everything that went down is part of the reason I love this channel so much. You guys own your content, you own your responsibilities, and you have the guts to admit that you’re still learning. You’re doing a great job and I have so much respect for what you’re doing here. Keep up the great work, your events are only going to get better with time.

The only suggestion I would make is to get your camera ppl on tune with the announcers, either by having monitors for the announcers so they can talk about the action on screen, or wider angles for the camera ppl, as most of the race the cameras were tight angle on cars not involved in what the announcers were talking about or were tight on cars not involved in action. most of all the action was missed and then had to hope for a replay. Other than that the show was amazing, even bought it for my dad for his birthday, He knew nothing of The channel or Of the Freedom 500 And he said it was amazing and he enjoyed it. So 1 New fan.

    1. Would be cool if you could filter in more track sound (the cars themselves) to make it more immersive to watch
    2. I feel like the cameras were often focused on the leaders where there was nothing really happening rather than the more entertaining battles for position that were happening in the middle of the pack. I'm sure it is a difficult balance but I think it's important to be aware of, especially as you head to Indy and have a larger track and in turn a wider spread of cars. If possible, you may consider doing a split screen type deal where we can see two views at once in order to catch more of the action.

Overall, a fine job though, and we all know that it will get better as you handle more events, and gain more experience.

@@thomasherring6640 The announcers should be watching the livestream and not the actual race. Even if there's a delay from actual to stream, the stream viewers wouldn't know the difference and that would give the announcers time to better follow the race. As far as camera crew, I think he needs 2 or 3 more cameramen.

That is how you do it if something goes wrong. Not trying to talk your way out of it. Huge respect!

Cleetus and Cars on Saturday went really well imo. You can’t control the weather unfortunately, but the fact you still held the event and were able to keep the show rolling despite how stressful and hectic it was for you and your crew made it totally worthwhile. It was my first event in person and I had a blast despite the rain, so thank you for pushing to keep everything rolling.

With all the issues I was experiencing during qualifying…I was kind of bummed, but the stream recovered and it was easily the best one yet by FAR. You guys did an excellent job! I definitely noticed the lack of a lap counter…that was pretty annoying. I kept hoping a camera would catch the scoreboard so I could see the lap count. 😂

Overall very good stream for your first out on your own. I’m here for the long run as part of the Cleeter crew.
I’ve said it before, we would like either a birds eye view of the track at all times in the stream, or for the cameras to follow what the announcers are talking about…which is usually the action. So much of the actual action, crashes or passing were missed up until Deegan came from last to 1st then the cameras were on him. Look forward to the next race!!! 🦅
