- The Egyptian Book of the Dead is a collection of spells and prayers that guided the deceased on their journey to the afterlife.
What it is:
A collection of spells and prayers written on papyrus, mummy wrappings, and other objects that accompanied the dead to their tombs. The book was compiled and refined over thousands of years, starting around 1550 B.C.
What it contains:
The book contains about 200 spells, each intended for a specific situation the dead might encounter. For example, Spell 33 was used to ward off snakes. The book also includes vivid images, such as a scale weighing a heart of the deceased against a feather.

The book reflects the beliefs and practices of the living, and is considered one of the most famous aspects of ancient Egyptian culture.
How it was used:
The book was used in Egyptian elite burials. Ancient Egyptians sought to emulate Osiris, the god of the dead, by triumphing over death through the spells in the book.
