  • You probably remember your 18th birthday, but not your first - or your zeroth. Why is that?

A lot of things are easy to remember: My high school graduation. My first summer job. That time I got arrested for emptying a bunch of Jello packets into Bryan Cranston’s gas tank - long story.
It doesn’t take a scientist to notice that adults don’t generally remember things that happened before the age of about 3 or 4. Why is that? Why can’t we remember the earliest events in our lives, up to and including birth?
OK, here’s an experiment: Try to remember what happened the last time you ate a burrito. Where were you? Who was with you? Was the burrito full of spiders?
These kinds of memories - being able to recall details of a particular event in the past - are called episodic memories. A person at age 60 will usually have some episodic memories from age 30 - she might not get all the details right, but she will be able to recall some events and explain what happened.
But if you take that same person at age 30 and ask her to describe something that happened during her first year of life, you’ll typically get nothing at all.
Sigmund Freud referred to this hole in our memory as “childhood amnesia,” or “infantile amnesia.” Freud, being Freud, explained it by saying we needed to repress memories from infancy because of their inappropriate or traumatic sexual content.
But sometimes a blank is just a blank, and contemporary scientists don’t tend to throw in with Freud on this one.
Another hypothesis that used to be popular says that babies can’t form episodic memories until they develop certain cognitive capacities, like language.
But there’s a major problem with the language-based hypothesis: Experiments have shown that animals like mice also display both long-term memory and infantile amnesia. Since childhood amnesia crosses species lines, it’s probably something to do with brain biology rather than language.
One possible answer would be to say that baby brains simply can’t make memories. It’s true that memory encoding isn’t as efficient in infant brains as it is in the brains of older children or adults - possibly because the prefrontal cortex of a baby’s brain hasn’t reached maturity yet.
But recent studies have shown that very young children can form some memories, leading scientists to think it’s not that we don’t make memories early in life, but that after a certain point, we can’t access them. The memories are made, but something happens to them: They get erased, or put behind some kind of memory blockade.
Patricia Bauer and Marina Larkina of Emory University have led research on this hypothesis: For example, in one study, researchers recorded children at age 3 describing a recent event, like a trip to a theme park.
Years later, the researchers followed up with those same children to see how much they remembered. At ages 5, 6 and 7, the children could recall more than 60 percent of the earlier events, but by ages 8 and 9, their recall was less than 40 percent. More research of this kind is needed, but this looks like watching the onset of childhood amnesia as it happens.
Another recent study has considered the role of neurogenesis in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that’s crucial for creating and storing episodic memories. If you didn’t have either of your hippocampi, you could end up like the guy in “Memento” - unable to make new episodic memories.
Neuroscientists Sheena Josselyn and Paul Frankland have proposed a theory that childhood amnesia happens because of rapid formation of new cells in the hippocampus when children are young. This is known as hippocampal neurogenesis.
Basically, while your brain is manufacturing lots of the cells you will use to make memories for the rest of your life, it wipes away or obscures the memories you already created as a young child.

Close your eyes and try remembering an event you experienced in the past.
Many people remember events they experience in the 3rd person, seeing themselves in their memory. If you think about it, that is impossible.

My first memory is waking up on my third birthday and knowing it was my third birthday. I remember confidently walking downstairs from my room and stating it was my birthday. Then I got my present. It was a remote controlled car. This was back in 1985.

My brother can remember a little bit after being born. He said he remembers looking around and seeing these people who he didn't know. He also remembers not having words for it but it was more a feeling of not knowing them, if that makes sense. My mom and dad said that he was very aware when he was born because his eyes were wide open and he was watching the nurse walk by and he was holding his head up. It sounded amazing! That's my older brother. I'm one of two children in my family. Well, this girl is out! PEACE!

My earliest memory was when i was a baby, I was probably a little under a year old. I was in my mom's friend's house playing with keys while my mom was getting her hair done. I saw my mom's friend plug in a hair drier and turn it on and wondered what would happen if I plugged in the keys. It wasn't pleasant and the last thing I remember is getting hit with a broom handle and crying.

Also this is likely be due to me reminding myself throughout my life, which is why I still remember something that early.

I'm pretty sure I have a memory from when I was 1 or 2 years old.
I had a dog that died before I turned two years old yet I can remember laying on the floor as a baby and the dog wouldn't stop licking me, and I couldn't stop laughing.
Watching this video made me question whether or not the memory is real, but I can still see it in my head, and I knew what the dog looked like before I even see a photo of him. So maybe not ALL memories get wiped

When I was about 1 year old I remember my Dad filming me. I was under the table and I was staring at the red light on the camera. The funny thing is that I've never seen the video because it doesn't exist anymore. One time I told my parents about that and they were truly shocked because they remembered watching the video and my Dad also still remembers me being fascinated with the red light.

Holy wow, thank you all so much for sharing your stories! These are amazing. My earliest memory is climbing out of my crib in my family's first home, and toddling into the dining room, where my mother was sitting at the table writing or looking at papers. I would've been about 2 years old. Though honestly, at this point, it's more like a memory of that memory. I feel like it 'looks' different than it used to, but I couldn't explain exactly how. /Lauren

my most recent memory is when I was 1 and a half years old, I crawled outside my house and into my front lawn before my mother ran out and grabbed me. I could talk then and later that day my brother got bad that my dad cooked something he didn't like and yelled that he would never eat again, and so I said " you'll get very hungry" and my whole family except my brother started laughing.

I have a number of extremely early memories!!! Born in 1954, I can remember the yucky green formula I was given as a baby. I can remember escaping from my playpen. Having my dipes changed. Being held by my mother, grandmothers, a number of aunts and my big sister...I don't remember any men (like my dad) holding me much until I was big enough to walk. I can remember crawling and learning to walk (and my mother washing the kitchen floor all the time as that's where I spent a lot of time crawling). My baths in the kitchen sink as a baby. Being stuck in my crib at "nap time." Crying to get attention when I was done with my nap. ...if I took one (I hated naps)! I remember my "nundle" (a blanket I chewed on to cut my teeth). Our dog "Buttons" that would knock me down when I was learning to walk. I remember standing next to my mom in the front seat of the car at a very early age (no car seats or seat belts in those days). ...and yes...even a foggy dim view of being pushed in a cart of some kind though a pair of doors that I always associated with my birth. ...or shortly afterward. I'm sixty one, now and I can remember a lot of what went on in my life. I can remember very early memories of Captain Kangaroo and Here's Geraldine (I might even remember that theme song), Garfield Goose and the first Bozo's Circus on TV, school from kindergarten on, my paper route, tap dancing lessons from age 4, climbing trees, little brothers coming along, etc. Just snapshots or little vignettes, but none the less memories of actual events. I'm sure you will say I'm wrong, but it doesn't change the things I can remember... I occasionally will say something to my sister and she'll exclaim..."you remember that? I haven't thought of that in years!" Frequently, if I concentrate on a single memory, I can start to remember what came before and after. In some ways it's nice! ...but I can't remember people's names to save my life if I don't have constant reinforcement over a substantial period of time! ...almost never forget a face, though!

I was at an amusement park around 2 or 3 years old holding my dad's finger with my whole hand and adults were just walking legs since I was so little. Dad had to let go of my hand to get his wallet out to pay admission so I embraced his leg so not to get lost. I looked up to make sure Dad was there but I was embracing a strange man's leg. I screamed for my Dad realizing I couldn't see him since I was so little. Suddenly arms scooped me up and I was looking into my Dad's face. And then I was OK. That's my earliest memory. I shared that at his memorial after he passed away.

I asked her if she remembers the time I fell off the kitchen dinning room chair onto a glass ornament fruit bowl she had on the floor next to the chair. When I did her eyes widened and she asked how on earth I remembered that. She says I was 1yrs-2yrs old and without a doubt no more then 2yrs old. I broke the bowl and hit my head but not a scratch or bruise was on me. My mother is very religious and she said she began praying allowed. I told her i remember her and her friend that I haven’t seen growing up in the room I remember exactly what he looked like. But she said there was only her home that day. Maybe an angel?

My first memory was probably around the age of 1-2 years old. I remember the smell of the mat the doctors layed me on to do tests. The mat was made out some kind of latex and I often got reminded by it when I smelled it somewhere else again later in life. My mother told me some years ago the docters found out I was allergic for that as a baby.

I've always disagreed with this idea of childhood amnesia. I have very vivid memories of my early childhood. I know how old I was because of the years I lived in 3 different houses for my childhood. 1st house I lived in was for 3 years, the next was 5 years and the 3rd house for 11 years. I agree I don't have as many memories in the first 3 years of my life but I still have plenty. Like being fed cranberry gerber food, very off standout memory. Other's like the first time I saw rain and times I injured myself when I was 2.

***** I don't remember what day it was in any of my memories, if you asked me what I did on a thursday 4 months ago, I wouldn't remember, I don't know anyone who does.
I still know what the weather was like that day, what I was eating, where I was oriented in the house and what I did after I was finished being fed. Not surprising it's the only vivid memory I have of being fed.

I'm an old man, jk I'm only 21. I still have vivid memories of being under 3, like the first time I saw rain, the first time I was given cow milk instead of formula or breast milk. I threw it across the room near my fisher price orange and yellow car. I remember being upset and grabbing blue bunny, my stuffed rabbit, and hugging him and turning to my left side to go back to sleep.
These memories I have are short, spread out but vivid like yesterday. There are under 100 of my early years and sometimes it takes something in my present environment to bring them up again, but I remember them well.

***** The problem is that we're not good at distinguishing between real and false memories, especially from when you were a kid, and it is incredibly easy to make false memories about your childhood; all you need is a picture of the event, or for someone to tell you about it. Most adults who claim to have vivid memories from events in early childhood are simply remembering what they were told about these events by other people later on, and have forgotten the fact that they were told about it. This is because the brain is good at storing knowledge but is notoriously bad at remembering where we learnt that knowledge. It's the same reason why you probably have access to lots of random facts without remembering where you learnt them or who taught them to you.

    • @EqualsThreeable
      @EqualsThreeable 9 років тому +3

Yeah, but I have no photos of my early childhood, and those that I do aren't really memorable. My parents never really talked to me about my past, and they say they don't remember the stuff I remember. So I'm pretty sure are true memories. The fact that I have such detailed memories ages 4-8, the second house I lived in were of those ages.

I'm 31 years old. The earliest memory that I can recall.... I was living in the Bronx, NY at the time my parents and I lived in an apartment on Grand Avenue on the 4th floor. I recall it was a sunny day and my father was at home cleaning. I remember that I was in my baby crib wearing my blue pajamas that was white covering my feet. I also recall that the show Alf was airing. (for those of you who remember that TV series). I personally don't know why I can recall that memory and that is really the only memory I can recall from that time frame. Yes I can recall memories such as the firefighter who gave my toy back after I had drop it from a fire escape because of a small fired that had occurred in an apartment unit within the building I lived at in Grand Avenue.

Dam reading some of these makes me wish I could have had a childhood like theirs. My earliest memories are a bright light and a ceiling and my next earliest memory was watching 9-11 on the news. A dust cloud engulfed a city street and people ran some dust got into the car and I asked my mom why she said, "It went through an air vent honey" Thousands of people died that day, needless to say. As I was typing this I realized something profound, those memories affected my behavior. I did not respect people or handle them all that well. I now understand that our earliest memories affect how we act in our lives. I know we can turn away from wrong doing and I will do so. Thankful I saw this video! Stay blessed everyone! I remember being born. For real. All I can remember is darkness at first, then I think I could see some red, you know like when light shines through your closed eyelids and looks red. I recall opening my eyes to see white light but everything was EXTREMELY blurry. Couldn't make out anything other then that I was looking at light. My dad would often (annoyingly) tell me every year for my birthday that he was there when I was born, he said he held me and said something to me, I was crying but then I stopped and opened my eyes. However I don't remember hearing anything, and again, I saw nothing but light because everything was extremely blurry. I found out sometime during my high school years, that babies do not have developed focus in their eyes yet, so that makes it more credible. I had a relative tell me once that he remembers being born too and he saw his dad's face and all that, but I just don't really believe it, because of the focus thing. The first sound I remember was some old lady walking slowly across a floor, don't know where it was or how old I was, but I think I may have been held by someone, anyway, the old lady I think stepped on something cause it made a loud crunching sound. A lot of kids don't believe me when I say I remember being born. Sometimes I wonder if it means I'm special. It just amazes me how many people don't remember stuff, my childhood friends will sometimes say they don't remember a lot of the stuff that I do and etc. As a kid I used to go to this Halloween party for a few years held at a church, anyway I befriended a special needs girl... the next year I saw her again and asked her if she remembered me from last year, I think she remembered me but the year after that she said no.

Butt Poopington Not true. Psychoanalysis is still studied to this day, some forms of Freudian therapeutic techniques are applied by psychologists everywhere. There was and probably never will be a psychology degree without somewhat extensive study of Freudian theories and therapeutic techniques. So you cannot be more wrong.

    • @--sql
      @--sql 9 років тому

Ksenia Donis Psychoanalysis was invented by Freud, yes, but just about all of his techniques and theories are seen as pseudoscience by contemporary psychologists. There are many, MANY scientists who consider the entire field of psychoanalysis to be pseudoscience because there is simply too little scientific evidence that it works. Freud took all of his results at face value without looking further into them. He did not rigorously test his results as modern scientists do.

    • @kseniadonis294
      @kseniadonis294 9 років тому

Butt Poopington as a fellow psychologist I should agree and disagree at the same time. It is impossible to scientifically test psychoanalytic theories, unlike cognitive or behavioural psychology. Psychoanalysis is based on anecdotal evidence and concerns itself with the "black box". However as I said it is a impossible to disregard Freudian psychology and psychoanalysis. The culture the relationship between therapists and clients that's in large thanks to Freud. Psychology is not only science it is also an art and a therapy.

    • @--sql
      @--sql 9 років тому

      Ksenia Donis
I mostly agree with you, however I think that a lot of what is considered "impossible to test for" really can actually be tested and quantified, in one way or another. If not now, then eventually. With that said, the fundamental tenants of psychoanalysis are based on untested premises, so really the whole thing lays outside of the realm of science for now, and, in my opinion, makes it an unviable form of therapy. There ARE perfectly good forms of therapy that have been scientifically tested in the field of psychology, but any psychologist who uses psychoanalysis as therapy for their patients is relying on faith and faith alone.

I clearly remember a few incidents from 7 months onwards. I was able to walk then and by age 11 months I was able to run. At 7 months I used to mumble a lot trying to speak a few words but couldn't speak with clarity. However, I was able to understand a few things what others used to speak. I could understand facial expressions pretty well, like laughter, crying, annoyed, etc. From the age of 2.5 onwards I remember everything clearly, like my firsy day in pre school, first friend, first text book, first uniform, first school van, first exam etc. My earliest memory is listening to my parents' conversation in the kitchen and then going to the dinner room all by myself then, into the garden exploring the house. It was a huge place. At age 2 when my brother was born, I also went to the hospital and wanted to play with him. Back then I thought I had a sister until I was 6 years old when I realized I was wrong.

I forgot about the inside of the pram for ages until something triggered the memory. I think it was an image of a pram. Later when I saw a photo of mine lots more memories came back. Interesting concepts. While hearing this, I began to think that much of what was said is true, but to add that in order for most of us to recall something it has to be repeated many times or looked over many times (actors/actresses in plays/films have to mostly remember lines). If you think about all the times you can recall a movie/show scene that excited or saddened you or songs you enjoy and can sing the lyrics with the song right away. I am no scientist, but I agree with the developmental part about the brain, but I also think that if everything in our life was repeated over and over again (like a "Ground Hog Day" movie moment) then we could at least recall most of our memories, but would have to play back like a movie for us to remember/recall all of it (which sounds impossible). That would be a scary idea, since now everything is changing and trying to find ways to make our lives easier, but it could make our lives the total opposite.

I remember pushing my cousin because she tried to take one of my birthday presents out of my hands and then curling up on the floor, thinking "sleepy"; this happened during my birthday party, when I turned three.

My mom was shocked when I told her about a memory I had about seeing her and my dad taking furniture off of a truck. I went on to tell her about the color and she was even more shocked. She told me son you were about to turn one. That was 39 years ago. I know people who have memories beginning from 3 months.

As upsetting as it may be, my earliest memory is my mother holding me and crying while we watch the second World Trade Center tower getting hit. I also remember from that day my mother throwing the phone against the wall in frustration because she couldn't get in contact with my father.

I'm apparently a freak of nature, because my earliest memories of being between 1 and 1 1/2 years old (crawling age) were never erased. Although I feel weird for being "different" in this regard, I also appreciate that I can share common pop culture and societal references (though firsthand experience) with people much older than me.

The earliest memories I am confident about is a dream about Disney's Aladdin I had when I was 3. That and generally walking around my house.
about 2 decades have passed and I still remember dreams I had that young?

Mom says if you concentrate hard enough long enough, you can remember baby stuff. Two things I remember, playing with a little barn on the fireplace - I like the way the doors open, close and lock and being uncomfortable, wanting mom to tuck the blanket around my head. There were no words just emotions and comfort feelings. So weird.

I remember from age of two. My first memory is being in a house full of toys and I was laying on the couch getting my diaper changed and there was another kid talking and the lady had a tub of water with her and she sets it on the floor, it was one of those things you put your feet in. One side was the living room and the other side was the kitchen.

One of my earliest memories was sitting in my high chair when I was almost three and knocking my sippy cup of grape juice into the floor and my mother getting a little frustrated.
I have a couple other early memories I would like to share that are quite strange. I was about four years old and in the tub with my older brother and sister (aged about seven and six). I was sitting squished at the back of the tub. I remember my brother and sister started fighting and my sister fell back onto me. I was forced underwater and with the weight of them both on me, I couldn't get back up and breathe. My siblings finally sat back up and I remember floating a little but not having any control of my body. It was as if I died or lost consciousness. Then I heard my mom screaming. It was the most terrible sound and I can still hear it now thinking back on it. An eye blink later, I was suddenly sitting up at the back of the tub again with my brother and sister in front of me as if nothing had happened and my mom re-entered the bathroom to help us finish up in the tub. This was not a nightmare because I remember continuing the rest of the evening and telling my mom something bad happened in the tub.
About a year later when I was five, I was playing in the yard of our little townhouse. There was a row of pine trees up a small hill behind our home that led to a parking lot and another community of townhouses and apartments. I decided I wanted to go past the trees. As I climbed up the small hill, my mom screamed at me to come back right now. I remember fear flooding me because I knew by the tone in her voice that she was going to spank me. I was so scared that I vividly remember SEEING MYSELF walk down the hill to her from her perspective as if I was next to her. I had literally removed myself from the situation. As soon as I reached her, I saw her from my own perspective again and then she swatted me on my ass lol....there was no escaping the pain.

I can also remember telling my parents when I was about three years old that I was a soldier. I was trapped behind enemy lines in WW2. BTW, I'm an atheist and totally opposed to this type of thing. How could I recall anything before I was born? One more thing - I believe we can be reborn in the past, because time is not linear, it is curved, as Einstein showed. Also, okay, this is complicated, I'm very anti-abortion, because of, you know, waking up alive in the womb, when I thought, in words, (Oh, this is where I am) and when I was born, immediately understanding every word anyone said (I don't care if you don't believe me!) I could see, as soon as my eyes opened, unlike what is the common belief that kids can't focus for a while, and I knew that the stainless steel weighing scale the nurse was taking me to was going to be very cold, so I screamed. I was arguing with my mother, because I finally figured out how to use the voice of this body, by the time I was 9 months old.

Personally, I think you can remember. The problem is, you don't realize you are a baby. You don't see yourself that way until older. What the person "thinks" he should remember, but can't remember it, are not things that interested you as a baby. You remember the things that interested you and you don't realize later, that you were that young. I remember doing things and seeing a picture, that was taken, of me doing it, and was amazed I was that young. What I don't remember now, was hold old I was then. I remember sitting in a highchair. I remember my mom rubbing my gums with a cool wash cloth when I was teething. I don't remember teething, that didn't concern me, nor did I know it was happening. But I do remember what my mom did and me wanting to chew on that cool washcloth because it felt good to do. I remember my aunt changing my diaper and me pissing in her face. LOL That really happened. I can remember her jumping out of the way when she was changing my diaper. I don't remember pissing in her face, I learned that much later, but I remember her jumping. I had wore diapers, and I pissed when I felt like it. And at that moment in time, I guess I felt like it. I heard my mom mention, when talking to another mother, that I never crawled as a baby. I remembered I didn't want to crawl because the floor hurt my knees. I remember it. Before I learned to walk, I remember things. But its things that interested me then and not what I thought should interest me. If you think on it, you can remember.

I have memories from 18 months and younger tied to trauma. I remember being at a gathering and a drunk relative giving me a nickel and choking on it. Being rushed to the hospital. Also going to church and walking down the street we live on. I have many more memories. There was another trauma. Could the memories be like a awakening in early childhood?

I remember when I was one. Ridding on a toy tractor in the kitchen while my mother was cooking. the reason I know I was one is because I asked my mother about the toy tractor. she told me I had one when I was one but it broke sometime before my second birthday.

I think my first memory is crawling after a mirror on wheels while my grandmother was visiting. No clue what age that was but very certain I couldn't walk yet. Most of my memories from that early are almost like photographs, just remember a face, a situation or something like it, just tiny flashes.

My earliest memory is when I was at my 1st birthday. But, I remember most things in a " video in my head" so to speak. My first memory is almost like a still frame on a camera of my aunt. But looking at photos she looked different . But it was deffinetally her. I just think my brain just messed it up ever so slightly over the years .

Maple tree in our front yard, I thought it looked nice.
My mom spraying water with a hose causing a rainbow to appear.
    My dad building a boat.
Being too hot with sun on my crib and crying. Mom rescued me and dog tried to help :) Had a very sore head and sat leaning against wall in the shade. I wasn't very mobile or dexterous.
The last one is probably the of the earliest. I was still learning to speak so it's all a bit of a hodge podge. My mom thought I had slid down the side of my mattress but I had riggled down the side to escape the sun. I was too young to speak so she didn't understand. It's stayed with me my whole life. I think the dog was trying to pull me out at one point. They got rid of him because he barked a lot. Probably saved my life in retrospect.

My earliest memory goes back to when I was about a year old. I thought it was a fabrication of my mind but my mother is in the memory and has confirmed every detail. The funny thing is, I vividly remember speaking to my mother and I remember her responding to me like someone responds to a baby uttering sounds rather than words. I remember being frustrated, but when I asked her about that memory she told me I couldn't even speak yet, which explains her reaction to me but also makes me wonder how I can have a real memory of me speaking when i wasn't able to.

My earliest memory in life was when i was just 9 months old. Before you say things like"How is that possible?,You are lying. and How did you estimate that you were 9months old?" i can say that i can explain it.Ever since i was growing up i have always remembered thing from when i was 3-5 years old.I remember my kindergarden, how it smelled, what i did there, certain things that have happened and just very vivid memories. And i had had a reocurring memory of me being small and crawling, probably a baby,in my home's kitchen which was green at that time following something round that has been spinning backwards and a woman smiling behind it on a white floor.Yes i do remember it as it is and before i could explain it to myself i actually always wondered if it was a memory or a dream?I had told all my relatives about it and they all shook their heads all the time thinking i was imagining. But we endeed has a green kitchen at that time,so they kinda belied me and said it could be possible it indeed was a memory.I havent told about my memory to my granny though.Ironically i don't remember when and how i told her about it and she nodded saying" Why yes i remember! When you were a baby and just learned to walk you had a "proshtapulnik"-in my country this was a celebration that the relatives do for the baby when it learns to walk and put random objects on a table, whatever the baby catches standing that will represent what he/she will be when he grows up. "When u had that celebration we had all gathered in that kitchen and put a white floor mat." When i told her about the round object and the smiling woman she said" Why yes that was me.I was the one rolling a homemade round bread on the floor luring you near the table with the objects." I then asked my mother when my proshtapulnik was and she said i had learned to walk at 9months old. That is my earlies memory i have and it has been reoccuring in my mind all the time ,these blobs of color that i have made sense of are my first memory from when i was under just a year old.
