My first tennis opponent was the wall. I had received no lessons then. I went to a coach and he told me to practice with the wall for 2 sessions and then come back for lessons. I had only seen one tennis match in my life and that was a McEnroe-Lendle final. That was all I knew about tennis. So I invented my footwork and strokes. The strokes I improvised really sucked, and I knew it after I received the first lesson, but somehow I managed to understand the importance of footwork in those private experiments. Footwork became my obsession and the best of part of my game. I can clearly remember I reached the conclusion I really need to move my feet to play this game. But your student's experiment demonstrates something else, she is much focused on the shot and she forgets to move. Different people, different experiences. Maybe my experiment means nothing to scientists, but I thought I can share it here.
The Spanish are very involved in the footwork side of tennis. I believe they originated the mindset of you really only hit the ball about 15-20% of the time, the rest of the 80-85% is moving to the ball. Which is why you should understand how to anticipate ball flight and move your feet accordingly to really thrive in this sport.
@@ldeue4837 I didn't know what do they teach in Spain. Thanks. This video puts a question: "can a beginner benefit from the wall practice?". My answer is yes. Even without instructions I think I did benefit from it. It forced me to think independently. And this particular student also says yes. Though she does not provide a detailed answer, she seems to be satisfied with it.
Your student Anna is evidently a super gifted talent for tennis. I know a lot of guys playing more then 30 years and playing amateur tournaments even yet they can't do the wall as this. Wow!!! 👍💪👋🙂
Intuitive Tennis is one of these tennis channels, that really HELPS and gives practical advice for each level of players. Plus Nik is not afraid to show the truth on court... No fake lessons, no „learn tennis in 2 minutes“ nonsense... I give probs and respect to this guy!! #tupacoftennis 😂😍
Wow what a tremendous aptitude for tennis she has! But it's also fantastic seeing the fundamentals you taught her put into work so soon. Keeping rhythm with the wall with a full follow through is no small task for a beginner. Great video!
Thank you Nik. This has to be the best wall training fundamentals video. Now I understand why I hit the ball too high, why I can’t maintain steady volleys and why it’s good to practice using dead balls. I’ve took lessons from multiple coaches here in Palo Alto, and no one discussed these basic tips. Thanks again!
I've just taken my 4th lesson and my instructor is telling me all the same things you are telling and showing your student in these videos. They are SUPER helpful for me to see, as in my mind my swing looks like a pro, but in reality I am in the same place as Anna! Keep them coming!!!
Great instructional videos like always. Seen a couple of these beginner lessons. It's a good idea to go back to the basics sometimes for a "refresher" course. Helps fine tune technique. And I am one of those who loves hitting on a practice wall. Overall workout is awesome. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Agreed tennis wall is very important to improve technically!! We still play against the wall even as advanced tennis players!! We post tennis videos and would love to welcome you to our channel and videos as well and would appreciate your support!!
Anna is just too cute. She's so connected and in tune with herself. She is a wonderful student of life. Don't want to make her self-conscious but I couldn't help but praise her. She must be a good dancer as well, I'm sure. She will be good at anything she takes up and she really can follow it through with good work. Beautiful solid coaching, coach! I really like watching your content and lessons.
great lesson coach. I see some players yousing the wall in a wrong way so guidence is a must . The wall is alweays there and you can train the year around.
Amazing video! I have been struggling with the wall since I started playing a year ago. I have been following the Anna series - you are both awesome :)
Great video to learn from! Thank you for sharing! I've been practicing almost daily against the wall but have been having issues . Going to try these techniques today!
more of a dead ball against the wall i am glad you said that it validated my concern because i always use the not so bouncy balls against the wall but i thought in the back of my head i was kind of cheating the wall we have is a wooden wall with lousy gravel with pebbles everywhere which makes it even more challenging thank you very much would love to come to the usa and take a lesson from you someday
@@IntuitiveTennis i had one other question for you i always hear tennis coaches say prepare early but when i watch steffi graf's forehand it appears like she hits late is that because she had great racquet head speed so it didn't matter and also she seems to move that left arm out of the way earlier than every other pro when she hits a forehand
Thank you for these videos. Funny thing is I started watching and learning how to play the same time this lady did. I've been playing more now, and practicing on the wall as well. Thank you for your videos coach 👍

What racket do you use in this video and also which ones do you recommend for a 14 year old junior tournament player? Thank you and I love your content!
Great advice here. I've been struggling with my 2 handed backhand against the wall but your tips on using a dead ball and not swinging back as far really helped. I was ripping around 10 in a row consistently. Applying this in matches, would you recommend a short takeback for 2 handed backhands when you are inside the court and have less time, and a full take back when you're near the baseline?
I find that I can hit nicely off the wall, controlled and at a nice height. But it's difficult and frustrating to do the same on the court, the ball goes high so much. Sooo much technique involved
Hey, does anybody have a suggestion for me, I don't have access to a "real" tennis wall so I was thinking maybe up the wall of an (elementary) school or empty business, around the back, or on one of the side walls. I could really use one at this point, I'm reworking my groundstrokes pretty fundamentally, trying to flatten it out and make better contact.
To reach pro level it take time but the more you practice with attention meaning analyzing your shots mess around with the grips try different approaches until you figure out what works for you, the key is patience don’t get bored because you don’t see quite improvement baby steps and consistency will get there, this word of advice coming from someone never held a racquet be4 lol 😆
Do you suggest to a beginner to use the wall? I had 15 lessons in total, but sporadically because of COVID. Now I will not have access to a coach for some months and I want to practice with the wall. Do you advise doing it? Could it consolidate bad technique?
God, this girl listens! You just give her an instruction once and she's off doing it. She's a very good student! With her talent and enthusiasm, I'm sure she's gonna be a very good tennis player for someone who learned as an adult. With excellent form, too - no pun intended. [Yes, I _DID_ notice that she is a rather good-looking woman. Cute accent, too! S.O.W., how's your wife with this, Nic? Me, I married a French-Canadian woman, she's the hot-blooded Latin type and well, you know how there are always these shoes hanging from telephone wires? Just use your imagination... 😮]
I think her racquet grip is so loose or something, it looks like it's gonna fly off her hands. Coach can you help her to hold the forehand while the tip of the racquet it pointing up little bit
I learned tennis hitting against a wall. You develop hand and eye coordination and footwork but you are forced into learning to hit down the line against the wall. It looks like Anna has had more than 3 lessons to be honest. She needs to hit the ball at least 3 to 3.5 feet above the ground as if there is a net to clear in order for her tennis shots to be relevant on a real court. Hitting against a wall is excellent practice but it is better to learn with lessons so that you know the right grips. That was my downfall. I taught myself to use a Continental grip and when I finally played, that forehand grip was useless.
You probably want to rewatch the beginning of the video. It clearly states she is a beginner with only a few lessons. It would be surprising if her strokes look better than was is shown here
What a great student. She listens and makes adjustments immediately.
Just said the same thing, only it took me two paragraphs and the better part of my life story. Great minds, eh?
You need to be quite experienced to be able to make all these adjustments. I don't think she's a real beginner...
