90s Stern often made my day but Jackies always made me smile. Thank You Joke Man
Billy and Jackie Puppet days were unquestionably the best
My personal favorite was the early Artie years. Jackie Puppet was great too ... Best part about Jackie, and this (and more importantly, money) is a big reason why he's still so bitter, was when they goofed on him.
Agree 100%. Notice that no shows with Billy ever get replayed. Not even clips. You barely hear Jackie or Artie. Big bird wants To erase the last 30 years. Hollywood PC Howie. Show is a huge pile of shit now. Even Gilbert is banned from the show now. Gilbert was the funniest & best guest ever but he only has women comics on now. Amy “totally lame & unfunny material stealing” Schumer & lame ass Judy Gold among others. Melissa McCarthy & Douchey fkn Jonah Hill every other week. & he’s the worst of all
Fact we got fry n many other voices like ren n stimpy childhood gold for gore n vulgarity on tv
Artie years especially the 1st years on Sirius was the best. Jackie's funny but he did bring so much negativity the last years on the show.
I believe it`s like with bands, we tend to favorite the era we became fans and started buying albums etc. I became a fan of the show very late as I live in Europe and Howard wasn`t a thing over here back then. When I started watching on UA-cam it was 2014ish and it was mostly the Artie era and even though I have discovered the 90s era later, and find it better, I tend to watch the Artie era shows more.
I always remember, the song "Why Won't They Let Howard Stern On TV?" was written as a parody to the music and cadence of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". They pretty much submitted it to Elton John, live on the radio, he read over it, decided not to sing it over (and _to_ ) the existing music. Elton whipped up a newer composition of music, including vocal cadence. His own delivery of certain lines even punch up particular jokes. I do believe, in the long run, Fred Norris is credited as the lyricist.
Wow two people that ruined there own careers, still blaming other people!
Its all they got.
I didn't hear them blame anyone for anything
@@originalsongsbyjonathanlew1512 Then you were not listening?
@@johnquest1044 they bitched and moaned sure. But they didn't actually blame anyone for the state they are in now.
@@originalsongsbyjonathanlew1512 I know, but if you know the history you can just hear it coming through. Jackie actually tried to get his job back, but the station said no.
Never thought I'd say this but Jackie's finally the funniest person in the room
Then again he was alway pretty good.
“I wasn’t there to promote myself” - best joke Jackie ever wrote.
How else do you make money though? Howard did the same shit times 1000. Can't hate people for trying to get bigger
Kevin Johnson oh no doubt but it’s funny that Jackie “(516) 922 -WINE, Jokeland.com, Governors this weekend” Martling said those words on his own.
who if not Jackie - we all have to promote ourselves.
.
Not much of a joke... Maybe you’re just an unfunny fuck.. 🤣😂
😂😂😂
Jackie is a class act. The show was at it’s best with Billy, John & Grillo.
Howard hammered Jackie MERCILESSLY on the radio non stop during the negotiations. Can you imagine your boss mocking you for wanting a raise?
It amazes me that people get so angry at Jackie, 20 years later no less, that he tried to get a big raise. Yeah, in hindsight he should of taken the deal that was offered. But viewers act like he committed some kind of crime.
Very very few people can name a Leno, Letterman, Bill Marr, Kimmel, etc writer. Jackie had a seat at the table, not kept away in a back room unseen. Jackies ability to recall old jokes and insert them as notes to Howard was not valued by anybody as these past 18 years show us. If anybody out there thought Jackie was a talent able to have his own show he would have gotten an offer. He needed Stern more than Stern needed him.
Facts
Jackie: "Robin took me to lunch two or three years ago, and we had fun and a lot of laughs. But she actually was trying to get me to join this cult that she's in, and I said, 'no, I really don't want to walk on fire on my fucking knees, you idiot.' "
7:19
So what does this mean?
@@SweWince That Robin is an idiot and always looking for miracle cures whether it's her health or peace of mind
Fred is the genius behind the show. Jackie was just great to goof on.
Jackie was the one making Howard funny feeding him jokes. Fred also wrote some but it was Jackie who carried Howard through those years. Not Fred.
Artie was a good replacement for Jackie but the show was never the same after Jackie left.
Two very different types. Jackie was feeding Howard with jokes while Artie told them himself, and sometimes gave them to Howard. To me it seems like Artie was mostly using the jokes himself anyway.
Artie was good for awhile.
Miss Martling on Stern .. it sucks hes gone
He was a huge part of making Howard funny. After he left the show had to change because most of the new jokes didn`t hit the nail as Jackies did.
Jackie should have hired a professional to represent him in the salary negotiations. His big mistake.
100%
He should have taken the 900,000.00 he was offered. Any rep would have told him to. He got greedy as fuck.
NYC HARDCORE his offer was $675,000 year 1. At the end of the 4 year contract it was $975,000. Jackie wanted $975,000 year 1. He talked about it on some podcast.
I don’t hear him complaining. Just cause big bird says he made a mistake that’s his opinion. He’s enjoying life & happy the schnauze is the one that’s always miserable and is the money hungriest person on earth
hahaha jackie was too cheap to hire anyone.. his own demise
That looks like the Jokeland Headquarters.
This is good stuff, would be cool if Opie keeps going a different lane like this.
Yeah, he absolutely has a gift for this arena as well - Opie can do anything.
.
Hate to admit it, but Jackie blew it. He gave tens of millions over the years. And the truth is, the only person not replaceable is Howard.
Fantastic interview!
The best was Jackie with "Off hour rockers" at Neptune
Pub in East Meadow in the late 70s
I started listening to Stern in the summer of ‘86 when he came to WYSP in Philly... The “early” days... I miss those days with Jackie and Billy West and a lot of the early “whack packers” - Artie saved the show after Jackie left. Now the only reason I listen is for the old stuff
I’m curious what Fred, Gary and Robin made...
This is a great video. Not kidding I really like it. I would love to see more like it.
Howard said "I'm not ready for Opie yet"
Keep waiting on that Greg.
This is really good, more interviews like this please!
Great interview
Have to give credit to Opie for one thing: he doesn't delete any of the negative comments on his videos, the way Stuttering John does. Credit where credit's due.
Love it OP keep up the good work.
I can't even watch this all the way through. 2 people that thought they were entitled to way more than they were actually worth to their prospective shows!
Jackie telling the story proudly about Howard paying the difference of his salary... does he not realize how repulsive that makes him
Buchwald! Jackie's single biggest mistake overall, was not joining Howard, Fred, Robin and Gary, in having Don Buchwald be his agent as well. He intensely distrusted Buchwald, and justified it in his mind as the Stern-crew being against Jackie, which was a paranoid, over-reaction on his part.
Even if we were to learn later that Buchwald actually hated Jackie on a personal level, negotiating for the Stern-Show crew was an ever increasing financial win for everyone and Buchwald, not being a self-destructive moron, would not have professionally undermined Jackie's financial compensation, ever!
I do believe however, that Buchwald and Jackie would have butted heads over what Jackie was worth in $$$. Maybe Jackie would have remained stubborn and still walked off the Show over it eventually, but at least Buchwald would have attempted to educated Jackie on how to negotiate based on more realistic factors, not just Jackie's simple math.
You don't have to like each other in order to mutually benefit from the synergy of such a unique and successful combination of people like the Stern-Show crew from that period. It was truly the Golden Age, not matter how much Howard claims that he loves the current show setup and that it's perfect now.
All of this is too bitter of a pill for Jackie to swallow.
His behavior is not unlike Pat Cooper, over-reactive and ultimately fades into obscurity due to self-sabotage.
It's a bit late now for Jackie to learn from his mistakes.
Okay Howard go back to playing chess
COLD GOLD MAKES YOU OLD WAY BEFORE YOUR TIME
Bahahahahhahaaaaaa AHHHHWOOOOOO!!!!!
I’m hearing Billy West singing it like Jackie!😂
This is great Opie!
Howard’s a snooze fest these days
So what the fuck does that make Opie and Jackie then?
@@Ard.cfc90 Much better than present day Stern. Opie's not bad at interviewing people, especially when he's along and doesn't have anyone he feels like he's gotta compete with, and Jackie's always good.
he would be a snooze fest even if Jackie was there.
I love O&A, don't have a favorite out of the two, don't bash one or the other, but this interview was better than anything I've seen Anthony doing on his show.
Awesome job Op...thanks for these!
Opie is fantastic, and Jackie is a great guest. These two make great radio.
You guys have great chemistry! Love the shows Opie. You’re doing great brothman 👍🏻
Opie reaching new lows knowingly putting Howard Stern's name in the title.
Anthony was always the talent. Opie was riding coat tails.
How else would anyone watch?
It's hard for me to be on Jackie's side on the one. He left the show in 2001 and he's not being interviewed about anything he's done in the nearly two decades since.
Jackie thinks just because he feels he was worth a million, that means he was worth a million. Nobody else was offering him that much either.
Shawn M he overplayed his hand, sure. But if Howard told them to give him the raise, they’d immediately do it. With all the therapy Howard gets, he hasn’t changed for the better.
The Joke Man series was awesome Opie. I could listen to his stories once a month easy.
The Jackie years were the best years period.
Absolutely. Jackie was the speed of the show then. Non stop line feeder for Howard. Most of it unnoticed to casual listeners. Proof is in the shows compared to before and after Jackie got there.
Good times I remember when Jackie came to your studio 2013
AWESOME!!!! Love this Op!
love it opie, the new fan just listened to the whole saga... i resonate with you and your life (golf/upbringing/perceptive) especially the shows with Patrice O'Neal, he called what cancel culture was curating years in advance.... keep it up nothing but love
True, the show was earning a ton of dough, but Jackie was making way more than most (if not all) radio writers. When you factor in all the plugs, he had it made. Should have rode the gravy train.
I don't know what you do for work, but that's the dumbest thing I've heard. Jackie, like him or not, was a huge part of the station picking up millions of dollars a month in ad revenues and affiliates. The idea that he wasn't making a million a year by the mid-90's shows how greedy they all were. Howard was making millions and the guy that wrote 90% of his funny lines and digs at guests at others was making a few hundred grand. The reality is, the brass didn't even really understand how much Jackie did each morning because Howard took all the credit even though Jackie was passing notes every minute with ideas of what to say.
I've heard Howard make that argument and it's disingenuous. There is no other radio show that you can come up with that was anywhere near the popularity or money maker that the Stern show was. Considering Jackie was one of two writers(I believe it was basically him and Fred) as well as a on air personality it really wasn't that bad. Obviously Jackie never did much after the show and the show is still around to this day. Jackie took a big swing and missed. At least he tried, unlike Fred who's eaten Howard's shit for decades.
@@MrOctober44
Jackie has also mentioned the breakup of his marriage and having to get his drinking problem under control as big issues back then.
really enjoyed this
All the people that hold a grudge against howard like jackie and artie are deep down pissed off that they cost themselves one of the greatest gigs in radio
ye might wanna add John to that.
with all respect because I wasn't there, don't know the actual drill -
therefore I can't join-in or join-on - I'd have had to be there. I couldn't
afford to intern (Gary had interest, but I needed to load trucks - UPS - in
order to PAY for grad school). Woulda killed to intern there - doubt I woulda left.
Took an advertising job soon after - nearby Mad. Ave. firm on Lex and 43rd.
(great because you merely took the train into Grand Central, walked a few blocks).
.
actually I think Boy-Lee was still there when I first applied as an intern. But
I kept applying once Gary took over. Gary's grown more than maybe anyone
this side of Howard and Robin - i.e. went to therapy himself, major props for that dude.
.
“I’m smokin pot..”
Hey Ope, has it ever occurred to you that Brother Wease is lying to you about Howard saying "he's not ready for you"? I think Wease told you that, because he knew it's what you want to hear. I seriously doubt Howard's even given you that much thought.
All I can think is how much more I would enjoy watching Ant and jacky vs Opie doing this interview.
Amazing to hear Jackie talk about his salary negotiations...just 11 years after Jackie left the Stern Show & they had all transferred to Sirius, Mel Karmazin's final salary & golden handshake severance was an eye-watering $255 million...
Both of these guys can’t stop riding Howard’s coattails
when Opie has the right guest he’s truly a great interviewer (This is simply awesome) People should stop knocking Opie because there lord & savior Howard Stern has issues with him (This was fantastic) luv Jackie and respect Opie for all the drama he had to deal with trying to steer the ship known as the O&A Show
Opie is boring as hell and this is coming from a fan of their show
Is Opie doing the show from his dining room table? That guy has no Talent
@Chris Hansen it actually makes sense though that Opie would actually have a budget for his show, just to keep it the same 😂
Chris Hansen only things good about O&A was everything but O&A.... carbon copy ripoff of the Stern show. Patrice O’Neal and Norton and CK and Burr made that show- the 2 “stars” might as well have been two construction workers talking about sawdust
@Chris Hansen i know your goofing, lol
Is this part of Jokeland? Possibly the infamous table that hangs out of the window when extended 😂
@@Don-Yeti possibly, but it doesn't appear to be in the "20 and 5" position here.
You rock O. Thanks for all the years of great radio
One thing you can give credit to Op Op for is he does do a great job at interviews...... Give yourself a bell
Yes, he's outstanding - and Opie always puts the other dude on display - it's never about Opie - he does a nice
job here with Jackie. There's some serious pain involved on Jackie's part - but Jackie's good-enough to fight
through it - speak as authentically as possible.
I was close by the show. In grad school. Daily listener, classes always through by 3 p.m. (when it
was an aft show). I learned so much from Howard, and it went way past humor, comedy writing, great
bits, daring takes on risque subject matter, etc. Howard was an inspiration to get into therapy
(now a lifelong advocate many years later). Howard was an inspiration to start watching what
I ate - i.e. the importance of good nutrition etc. Also the way Howard fought NBC, the FCC - I'm
not even sure where Howard Stern gets his strangth. But I'm grateful to everyone - just sorry it
had to start ending and slowly. Still in all it was a fantastic run - and they'll always have:
"The Greatest Radio Show of All Time" on their resume's. Thank you howard, and thank
you Robin, Fred, Gary, Jackie, John - of course Gary who I respect beyond belief. What
growth by everyone there. Artie as well - just one great decision after another after another.
...
Funny how Opie passively takes all the credit lol
15:26 1995 salary negotiation
21:12 2000 salary negotiation
So true
opie. get at me...
Footer!!
You have your headphones on. Make sure they talk into the mic!
Squash the beef? Opie..... You made the beef!!!
Like Lennon and McCartney?!?!
The set of balls on Jackie.
Like Greg Giraldo cracked at a Stern show roast....."Jackie, I love your new book that just came out- how to fuck up a career you didn't deserve in the first place!"
I love this Opie. Changing my opinion of you honestly. Would love if you kept interviewing more former Stern staffers like this.
Jackie is counting the shows money. Just like all employees!
You still keep in touch with "Stuttering John" Jackie?
This should have been opie's show. With his great radio knowledge and history in the biz, he could have interviewed other jocks and just shot the shit about inside stuff for fun. Hell even bring Denny onboard occasionally.
4:45 “I don’t tell back biting tales.” Hahahahaha SERIOUSLY!?!? What planet is he on?
AT JACKIE'S HOUSE !!!
2:36 Lets Go
Fred knows where his bread is buttered.
Howard went down and crashed because jackie quit...hahahahahahahahah Now thats funny!
Gotta critique Howard Stern's secret leaked seminar.
"LIKE LENNON- McCARTNEY" the first funny thing Jackie ever said
2:35 a perfect display, of the quality of this content
Here is Opie playing Jackie like a fiddle.
Totally. Stuttering John did the same thing to Opie when he was on the show. John fed into all of Opie's delusions because he knew it would get him going. Talentless people always have to resort to shitstirring because they're not able to do anything else.
I don't think Jackie understands that skipping work while demanding an amount you won't budge from isn't "negotiating".
Anthony should get an Opie puppet
“ of course Howard paid me the money out of his own pocket. He needed me”- definition of million dollar talent with a ten cent attitude
but there might be a different way to look at this. Rather than just dump on Jackie - God knows
enough people did or tried-to. What woulda been nice if Jackie had gone into a therapist - worked
through it with a therapist, i.e. am I being UN reasonable?! Then maybe turned that into ongoing
bits, i.e. Jackie at the therapist. Howard tried doing this with Artie - and it coulda led to so many
golden moments. But people don't like the couch. I'm not sure why having spent the better part
of my life in therapy - I thought if Howard Stern willingly can then that's a pretty good reference.
I literally started therapy in early winter of 1983, musta been late January not sure the exact day.
That's how loyal of a listener I was. That's how much I was taught by Howard, the show, etc. Oh
and I think I forgot to mention Fred in a previous post - that's like forgetting to mention Bruce Springsteen.
.
If Howard needed him why
is he still on top while the joke man shills around on second rate podcasts talking about when he was on Stern?
Domenic Quinn haha he needed him? He made a billion dollars after he left. What a delusional fuckin guy
mmaunz that’s not the conversation. Anybody with a brain knows the show sucks now. Point is, Howard didn’t exactly need Jackie did he? I’d say he’s a lot higher on the “on top” list than Jackie Martling is. We know the show sucks now and it’s not classic anymore, thanks for telling us you fuckin moron
tom senick still on top? Have you listened to the show lately? Or in the last 8 years?
All I can think about is Springsteen's 'Glory Days'. I don't know what he did after he left but I wonder if he ever could command the 1 million a year he asked for back then.
The fact that this has 331 likes is 9 months speaks volumes.
If Jackie had just stayed he’d have gotten his payday
Like everyone else that did stay.
Holy crap, Jackie's gonna dislocate his shoulder from patting himself on the back so much. Never shoulda left the show, Jackie...big mistake!
Really?
Jackie you definitely deserved the money! They should have given you an ultimatum and say this is it take it or leave it by this date at least
That Elton John/ dump button story.......I don't believe him lol
The Boss is always right!
Jackie’s the best; I love listening to old Stern and Jackie tapes. The Beatles broke up when Jackie left!
I always viewed the whole 'pay raise' thing as a case of, "3 sides to every story........his, hers, and the truth."
Our ego is always our worst enemy. Wouldn't be surprising if Gary and Fred's salaries have increased (at least) 20x what they were making when they first started on the show. If that is accurate, then, it would be safe to think that Jackie would have earned a similar increase.........over time.
This was GREAT to watch. I'm laughing at the weirdos complaining lmao
@John G yeah bitch
It's called truth.
L O V E J A C K I E ! ! !
Jackie wishes he was still on the show. His cheapness cost him his career and lots of $$$$
There should be a comment thread on this.
With every last bit of life and soul thats been drained from the Stern show today, knock-knock jokes are about as edgy as Jackie could get.
Hashie19 If a bunch of SJW start to target the new SJW Howard Stern for his past shows, those who made him rich, we will see a new career destroyed as it happened to Cosby... I'm still waiting 🍿🍿🍿
Matthew Anthony Robin has always been 2nd highest salary to Howard.
Jackie's _deadly._
Jackie,Fred, Billy and the Jackie puppet were the the best on the show!Howard's barely in my top 10 of favorites on his show!
It’s called The Howard Stern Show, not the Jackie Martling Show.
Johnny Carson didn’t name check the writers of the jokes in his monologues.
They also never got on mic and weren't on camera like these guys were.
It`s impossible to compare the two. Two completely different platforms, content and personalities. It`s like comparing sushi and pizza.
He didn’t need you. His career continued to rise without you. Who needed who?
Joke man !
Great format for an old school interview
Nancy was thrilled, then when Jackie lost the job she divorced him.
Howard made who Jackie is. This guy still won’t admit it.
Boy, this is sad to watch.
Two jealous guys in a dining room
demetri elenis yup !
Weird that Howard Stern would want to take credit for The HOWARD STERN SHOW. The fact Jackie doesn't understand this is why Howard has a billion dollars and Joke Man sells stuff out of his basement. That said; Jackie > Artie !
jackie is insane
