Not exactly cog sci, but in the same arena... we have a lecture in this series by Steven Pinker (Linguistics as a Window to Understanding the Brain). We're releasing a new lecture (there a total of 12) every upcoming Saturday and Wednesday. Since you've expressed interest I'll plan to release the Pinker lecture this Saturday. Stay tunes and thanks for watching!

This has to be one of the best expository videos on UA-cam. Mr. Cohen’s presentation is a magic mix of data, riveting storytelling, and masterful exposition and explanations. The only additional thing I could wish for is for the US and other governments across the world to hire him and others in his domain to help drive the right political decisions. Thanks for hosting him and keeping this video available.

This man is utterly wrong about demographics but has nice visual aids. We have massive population decline all over the world with the exception of sub-saharan Africa. I attended a Paul Ehrlich lecture at Stanford in 1970. Ehrlich predicted mass starvation in the world and in America by 1985. Population decline in 2022, is in every nation on earth especially India and China which has 40% of the world's population. Plus, urban populations have radically falling birthrates. Be careful where you get info.

Demography can be divided into 'formal demography' (need lots of mathematical and statistical knowledge) and 'population studies' (is more closed to sociology, economics, ......)

The only reason I browse the web is to learn more, especially through awesome presentation of information like what you and other fine people are providing, transferring content which both awes and factually informs people at the same time is just a magnificent tool for understanding different (new and perhaps unknown) perspectives.
That and the study of human anatomy.

Agreed! And more to your advantage: Mexico city was built on top of a lake which was filled with dirt, which makes it "gooey" when it comes to earthquakes. This "compacted mud" becomes very liquid when you shake it. This mud also amplifies the shock waves, which is actually worse.

Your use of visuals really enhanced the talk. I will definitely use clips or all of this video in my grade 11 Social Studies class (in British Columbia, Canada). A gross oversimplification of the problems we face, but how else can you explain it to people without spending decades understanding these things?
I have no clue how to fix the problems presented here and I suspect the solutions presented will be challenging to implement even if they work. I hope more individuals like Prof. Cohen can get the ear of those in power and help guide us into the future with a more careful hand, as regardless of my doubts, I still trust him more than a politician.

I think contraception is more easily available to rural areas in Pakistan and Bangladesh than in cities.
The corner drug store needs a prescription for contraceptives to my knowledge and even proof of marriage. I don't think it's in the legislation but it's definitely in the culture.
Anonymity and privacy in cities is a dead myth, especially in apartment buildings and housing complexes.

I agree that we should strive for a much lower global population than we have currently. To make a space analogy, our struggle for resources is quite analogous to the life cycle of stars - the high-mass (high-population) ones burn through their matter much faster than those with lower mass, which is something that is certainly desirable for us since we need to greatly advance out technologies for our long-term survival, and having a low population would buy us enough time for that.

It's not simply a matter of family size, but of lifestyle and consumption. I know people who live by themselves, but who are consumerists who waste energy, food, and materials because they throw away & repurchase constantly for convenience. I know families that are very conscious about the environment, always recycling, not wasting, being careful about energy and food consumption.
Another important issue is fuel consumption. Some single people travel constantly by airplane, take long road-trips and long commutes, and purchase items from the other side of the planet. These single people may carry a higher carbon footprint than entire families who stay local in their vacations, have short commutes to work/school, and purchase locally.

QUESTION posed :why is it better to live in the city? all your answers are based on contraception (biased?)
here is the real question & answers which you outline yourself
    (AS I PERCEIVE THEM)
WHY IS it BAD TO LIVE IN THE CITY? the illusion of privacy , all crime (rape? hence the greater need for contraception?) is much higher, there is much social turmoil (war/rioting?) so security is a big problem, more exposure to virus /bacteria from other countries (health problems) the fact that "they" have quadrupled the price (or rents) economic problems, the fact there is no parking, transportation problems. this doesnt sound like living in liberation to me.

Thank you for a really interesting lecture. I couldn't help but compare the statistics that were available in 2012, regarding population and birth rate, with where we are now with so many people dying of this horrible virus. I saw the other day that a woman in India gave birth to nine babies (which is quite rare). It made me wonder about replacement theory, which works with animal populations too. I wonder if this sort of thing is related to that.

The most important thing to understand about the food situation today is that there is absolutely enough to feed everyone adequately. Food shortages are caused by people, not drought. It's an issue of distribution, not production.
Most people think the 1984 famine in Ethiopia was the result of a drought. Untrue. The drought made it worse, but it started as a result of war displacing farmers and leaders who seized donated food to sell for arms.
    Famine is man made.

That is literally the best time to teach someone. You could teach 15 years of information in 3 years, simply because a child's brain is so much more adept to learning, I think the number 1 thing to teach at that age would be language. Not just native, but maybe one or two others. It would have to be done right to avoid confusion of the child. But I think it would be the most effective in advancing a culture. Teaching a 2 year old just requires a well trained person.

Imagine if the same material were covered by the history channel. So much more dramatic music and footage of explosions, as well as a bigger focus on how bad it can get rather than the solutions and the responisibility it takes to seek after them.

Thank you for making this video. I really think that at least this level of understanding of demography is important for everyone to know, I'll definitely be sending it to my friends and teachers.

makes sound sense!! True, based on data from undernourished and provisioned countries. Shocking that so many in the U.S. (1 in 7) households unable to properly feed their families...Does anyone have a more convincing theory as to reversing these issues? Why is it that when someone proposes actionable, and deductively reasoned proposals, that naysayers always rebut without offering a better or alternative solution? I say shut up or put up!!

Watching this in 2021 with the Covid 19 situation going on, millions of people dying, makes me really think if it is somehow actually THE CHANGE that our world needs. I know it is sad, but this issue about the worldwide rapid population growth is something that should be discussed more.

Just as an advice: I'd be really happy to see a video like this about cognitive science, maybe with Daniel Dannett from Tufts University. That would be awesome.

His name is Joel Coen. He's talking about Thomas Malthus, who in the late 1800s predicted (or 'miffed') that population would eventually devastate the earth.

I don't have to imagine I have dyslexia.
I will remember what that was like.
Thank God for The literacy council of Tyler Texas.

Some people are born to share the information and teach.
