Thanks man. I know that this was quite a while ago, but the fact that you explained the basics of this process so well is helping me to understand how to implement this with all new software in 2018. Thanks for that!
Excellent tutorial James. I understood the BV512 in Reason4 but struggled in Record for some reason. One thing it would have been nice to see was your idea on how to made the output clearer once you have the basic set up. I have heard answers such as modulator volume/ compression or even filters.
ah ok nice , i figured it out for live vocoder... enable "rec source" on your mic audio track and !important!, make sure both audio track and combinator track are record enabled! that should do the trick... if you play now on combinator track your voice is also picked up and modulated: AWESOMESAUCE! (answer of OzONa in Propellerhead Forum)
I'm with the rest of these guys. I did exactly the same thing and I got some sound but not like this. At first, when I added my audio track, the signal from my MIDI control was not seen by the vocoder. I even tried a couple of videos and couldn't get it to work.
For all of you who don't have any sound this is what I did. I created a mix channel and took the vocoder output and fed it into the mix channel. Then I put the Stereo width on 0 and put the volume up full volume. If the sound is too low just create a maximizer to boost the volume.
Wow comments are nuts man. This guy ha this guy did an excellent job in his explanation and quick break down of the basics and then some. I'm not understanding all the complaints but I got the vocodwer
Don't have an audio input....yet ?? Oh my - that sounds promising. :D Nice videos, James. You should consider zooming the screen in/out more. I use that a lot with my tutorials.
@bossplayer with the beatrepeat combi, i've found you have to deliberately trigger it late. eg. to stutter a snare sound, try triggering button one like 1/8th of a note late its easier to play around with a controller if you have one, or use remote overide with your qwerty keyboard, and live record a few automation passes. then copy and paste some of these automation clips between the buttons and on different parts of the bar. thats what i do. ps awesome videos JB!!
@0tto777 i must have done it wrong as well, there is no output from the vocoder connected to anything and the bv512 isn't responding to any sample loaded in the nnxt
can u show us how to really use the beat repeater in reaon. record on vocals and the beat i cant seen to get it to hit or repeat when i want it to its off beat
why does my vocoder not have an audio track thing when i create one but urs does when u explain the record part... which shows the left output routed to it
im having a few issues hen i hook up everything (vocoder nnxt etc) im still not getting no sound. when i run it to the mixer it only comes out one side :( and what patch is that subtractor that gave you that effect?
USE THE "TAB" KEY TO FLIP THE RACK. That's what NO ONE tells you, it is not mentioned in the operation manual or anywhere else!! It's the TAB key that allows you to see the rear panel in the rack view.
this does not work for me ?!? Followed this done it the same. Got my audio coming through put it in the modulator. Subtractor going in the carrier. Play audio, hit notes, no sound :/
Im sorry but i dont think you mention once what that "Master Selection" thing is...and it's connected up so it's doing something... this is not a very friendly tutorial. I bet Steven hawkins would have a job following this tut. O n just a suggestion.... make Reason 5 go fullscreen, i dont know why but i find it really annoying and im sure other people do aswell!
These tutorials have been soooo helpful and have really sparked creativity in my work, just by teaching me how to use Reason to its full capacity.

Your videos are excellent. I've been looking for this information for a while. Thanks! I can't wait to start working on it.
