  • Just imagine that at one time Ohio had one of the busiest ports in the World and it was Ashtabula that held that title! Walk around the harbor and you can still see remnants of that past along with the modern shifts to make this a tourist town in these new days. Combine history with beaches, beach glass and perhaps a good, brewed coffee or IPA and you have yourself a nice little daytrip!

Thanks Jim for showing the Ashtabula lift bridge, the harbor & all the history of the area is very cool too. I will definitely go up there & check this out for myself on a weekend. I had to watch this video in 2 parts since I had to leave for work this morning & finished the rest after work. And I'll look up that festival for next time, I love most fairs & festivals. It's neat to see all the angles of that bridge going up & down. Nice job on the video!

Dad grew up on 1131 West 8th Street Carl Kosola. He owned the home across the street. His ashes were spread at the Coast Guard Station where the family fishing business was until the 50's.

Sadly, the Tecumseh is no longer there. It's been taken to scrap. But recently, the "Cuyahoga" freighter, that was docked roughly in the same spot of the Tecumseh, caught fire. ( there's video of it on UA-cam) . Great video, by the way!!

Hey thanks for sending the positive vibes!! I actually did a kayaking video and paddled over to the Tecumseh! About 3 weeks later it was gone!! I loved seeing it, but I’ll have the memories. I’ll need to check that out!!! Thanks again!

Hey Jim. I'm one of the few bridge operators. The humming was from a brake not disengaging so the extra lifts were the operator and mechanics trying to work on fixing the issue

Pretty cool to hear from one of the operators, especially after growing up here in bula! I actually graduated from lakeside and work for the railroad now and have done work on JM (the CSX/NS bridge down the river) including a few lifts back when the bridge tower was operational. Fun Fact: Beside being a train bridge obviously, our bridge is actually very similar to yours on bridge street and really only have 2 major differences which are 1. Our machinery room is mounted on the moveable span and the operating strut tracks are stationary on the counterweight tower, where your machinery room I believe is mounted on the tower and pull the tracks back into it (This is a more modern design). And 2., Our counterweight is actually hollow! When installed it was filled with sand so that the engineers had more control over the weight distribution.

If you would have kept walking up the hill where you were looking at the Tecumseh, just to the overpass where the tracks are, and turned 180 degrees, you would have been able to see the train bridge. It basically the same as the lift bridge except it is for the trains to cross the Ashtabula river. The train disaster bridge is behind the hospital. That entire stretch of the river is great for kayaking.

There is another bridge further it's a JM Drawbridge a Strauss Heel Trunnion Bascule bridge built in 1911 by the Strauss Bascule Bridge Co used by the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad New York Central and Norfolk Southern Railroad. This Railroad bascule bridge was fabricated by the Pennsylvania Steel Co.
