The Fender Bassbreaker 007 Amplifier | Class A Amp | An Inside and Out Review Played | Tony Mckenzie

  • The Fender Bassbreaker under review is just 7 watts output. Here we show you the inside and out of this amp so you can see the overall quality - and it's played too at the end of the video.
    7 watts is not a lot to be going on tour with so slow down and think practise amp or amp at home. If you use a 4x12 cab then it will sound louder of course but its not really a machine for gigging with. It's a Class A amplifier and you can if you spend a short time with it get tones that are hard to achieve from other amplifiers for guitar.
    But the question is... is this amp anything but a toy? and is it really worth the money. Find out in the review here.

      Yes I like to show what you are really buying... it shows so much about the amp and makers. Thanks for watching.

      I really appreciate this. Does anybody hate the new "soldering the pots and jacks onto the circuit boards as if they were effects pedals" as much as I do? Makes them difficult if not impossible to replace when the time comes eventually.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  6 років тому

      I dislike them - I would not say hate them as they are what they are, but I often wonder about replacements in 20 years time... Good point and thanks for watching.

    I bought the 007 combo a year ago and I’ve used it everyday I’d say. Beautiful tone. I’ve just pulled the 007 head now with the 70w 12” cab.

      @officialtonymckenzie  3 роки тому

      Yes the 007 worked great for me too. In fact I had two at one stage. Mine were second user (and in the UK) costing about $200 equivalent. Great for the money. Thanks for watching and stay safe.

    So I was told it's a single ended amp, which is prone to some low hum. I bought the matching 1x12 cab. Sweet little amp.

      I did have TWO at one stage :). Not that bad an amp especially for the price at the time. And thanks for the post of your experience with it too.

    I am impressed with the workmanship from Mexico. I have a Strat made in 2011 and a Telecaster made in 2015. About the same as the American Strat and Telecaster made 60 miles away. I changed some things just because I can't seem to keep my hands off. I played that amp in a local Guitar Center. I was amazed by it. I have from a two watt Vox head to a hundred plus Fender Black Face and several in between. I just couldn't justify being it home. I can live without many things but I need a justification every day. That was mine for that day. Thanks for the great review Tony!

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому +1

      Yes much of the Mexican stuff gets 'bad press' it seems but its pretty cool for the money I think. Ha it's so easy to keep buying stuff.. guitarists never find the sound in their heads I think - its always in the background and 'just one more thing' could do it! :) But it never does. The 7 is a really nice head... I got this one for around just £160 second hand and it was like new. A nice class A amp. Thanks Kevin.

    Thanks for opening up all these boxes :) Here in Canada we can't walk into the store with a set of tools and start dismantling amps. The fuse holder is a deal breaker for me. (Wouldn't have known about it without your review. ) They could have put on a less substantial carry handle and used the savings to put in a decent fuse holder. Thanks Tony.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому +1

      They certainly don't let me do it here either :). Nope... I have to go and buy one before I can open them up. But I think its worth the effort to see the quality inside. Yes the fuse holder was 'so so' really. I'm not so sure of the price of the '7' in the USA but here they are expensive list at £270+ (or some thing like that) which makes it around $375-390 which is not cheap for a 7 watt amp. Always worth a look inside ;-) thanks for watching.

    Great review my friend, so many folks wanting to buy these amps new or used never have the opportunity to open them up and take a look at the build quality....so you are a great help to a lot of us by giving us in depth information before we spend our money...so again thank you for taking the time to make these video's.....being a long time subscriber, you have helped me understand the difference between slick marketing and the real truth behind these products. Take care Tony and I look forward to watching the Marshall ballbreakers review..lol

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      Ha yes the ball breaker for sure... not! Actually the real ball breaker is the 2555X head I also reviewed which is really heavy.
      I always love to see inside amplifiers - I have seen the good and not so good stuff and it's always an 'eye opener' to see exactly what we all buy. TBH this little 007 for the money is pretty reasonable quality. Mine was £160 second user but it was like new. And being a Class A amp it has its own tones for sure. Thanks for the kind words... and as always for watching.

    VOX AC 30 HW, Marshall JTM45, Fender Deluxe Reverb here…. and the Bassbreaker holds it’s own. Certainly when recording. Needs a good match with the type of guitar/speaker (Jazzmaster, Tele, single coils) and it literally spanks the big boys! Amazing price… No affiliation with Fender whatsoever, just like this little amp a lot!

    Another great video Tony, and another that I somehow missed from earlier in the year. Having heard you play through it I went out and bought one with the matching 1x12 cab and will give it a go this evening. Hey Robert - do come back and let me know on here what you think... more comments from owners never did any harm :) For it's 7w etc. I thought it was a pretty cool piece of gear. A bit awkward inside, but it was made pretty well too. Thanks for watching.

    • @skithewhitestuff
      @skithewhitestuff 6 років тому

      Hi Tony. Having played through it I can say I was surprised how loud it was, especially for a 7 watt amp, it doesn't sound that much less than my Marshall 100W. I should think it could handle a small gig well enough. As I have the separate head and cab, the speaker is the 12 inch as apposed to the 10 inch in the combo, I'm not sure if the 10 inch could handle the bass as well as the 12 inch but i found it to push a lot of bass and had to turn it down to a quarter on the dial, i'm not complaining its just an observation. I am however, missing the usual effects that can be found on most amps, in the form of Reverb & Delay, so I'm now in the market for a couple more pedals as my other amps have them built in. I did like the treble boost button, which i thought would just be like turning the treble knob to the max but it seems to give it another dimension, i heard another reviewer describe it as a Marshall tone. It takes pedals well and handles the extra volume that they can give the overall sound.
      Overall i am very pleased, it suits my needs, and its the first amp that my wife likes the look of, it goes with the rest of the furnishings, happy wife = happy life.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  6 років тому

      Ha happy wife ;) I know what you mean. Good comments throughout there and great for more opinions like I said before. Correct it IS a basic amp without the frills but it does sound pretty cool. Through a 4x12 it IS loud :) Thanks Robert for the info - I'm sure it will also help many.

      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      Hi Tom - yes I have created a few videos and just uploaded - keep you busy for a while :) I thought this amp was not really a 'badly made' amp - it's true that it's likely made down to a budget, but as you see it had no real problems. Mex is one thing, but this one is better than some eastern amps I've seen - even from 'names'.
      I had a bereavement so was not around for a while but I'm here now. Thanks for watching.

  • @ArielCoronaVillano

    I've read through the comment section and I've gathered you sold it, bought it again then sold it again. Can I ask why you ended up getting rid of it? I mainly want it for studio use, cleans and as a pedal platform. Great videos by the way, new subscriptor :)

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  4 роки тому +2

      Indeed... I did sell it and buy another later. I used for studio too, but different style probably. I rarely use pedals except a wah and the drive on any amp can really be a make or breaker for me - and I do like them without those pedals. I liked this amp really and the main reasons for selling anything often is that I use the money to buy other gear for review. On the second occasion I bought the amp very low cost (second user but like new) so bought it again. Later I sold that one also to refund other gear. Its no real reflection on the amp. I did have a supersonic 22 head at one stage and I sincerely regret selling that amp - far more suited to my playing. I have loads of inside and out reviews of amps on my channel here: ua-cam.com/play/PL764D9C7505FDEC8D.html and you might like that stuff, but there is so much more - check out all the playlists... and thanks for watching. • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      Hi... well I guess the 'understanding' of the internals is really only a part of the reasons to look inside any unit you might buy. I like to see if there really is quality in there, whether there are dry joints, low quality components, plain old junk etc. and I do think that many people that view these videos really do want to see that. It always puts my mind at rest when I open up a unit (amp, effects etc.) and see just how well it was made and the company took pride in the manufacturing of the unit. If the hardware is 'right' then it's likely that the rest will be 'OK' too. Thanks for watching..

      These sell in the UK used for around £165.00 ($210) which I feel is a reasonable price for the amp. While it's no Diezel or Mesa Boogie at that sort of price and from what I showed it's pretty hard to beat. Take the Marshall CODE and this is a better amp... and mine is not that noisy? I wonder if you have a tube issue? But you are right that you can't get the money back that you paid for one of these new. On used gear, I think its often down to what price someone will accept as a minimum as opposed to the price they want... Ha and I know that to always be the case when I sell some gear. Thanks for your info from a user - always great to hear.

      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому +1

      Well it is probably built down to a price (I think I said that in the video) but it is a Class A amp so it has other attributes if you're a 'tone hound' so to speak. I agree that no loop is never that good though...

    I have a little 10w blackstar solid state for home use but looking for something with heat
    id like to know what you would recommend without remortgaging
    the in built effects on the blackstar sound great but are limited
    I have a few stompers I love but think they would sound loads better through tubes
    thanks for the years of down to earth entertainment 54

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      Well, ArielSmartyPants below said the Bassbreaker 15 was basically three channels and reverb, loop etc. and its likely to be built like this one so that's a consideration. I also have used other stuff recently (in review etc.) like the older THD Univalve - they can be bought for about £400 UK so are a good deal and will probably last forever. I also prefer tube amps really... I have tried and used (and still do) most of the simulators etc. but tube amps 'feel' better when you play somehow. Thanks for those kind words and for watching John.

    None of these modern day production amps will be dragging along 20- 30 or more years from now like the handwired tube amps people dust off..retube and cap and play just fine. These are disposable amps. Ive seen pcb tube amps from 10 or 15 years ago opened up. The pcb where the tubes are mounted is all yellow and brown from heat stress. Pcb mounted pots are a bad idea from a design stand point as well. Iam sticking to my old Traynor amps from the 70's thank you. They are cheap as hell..hand wired and still can be found in pawn shops. Easy to maintain..built like a tank and sound great. These modern pcb amps are just not up to par with quality. And the botique modern small builder hand wired amps are fine...just pricey as hell.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      I guess you are right about that... the PCB stuff can deteriorate... but remember those old Fender boards suffered from moisture getting in to the board and shorting? You don't see that these days on PCB (at least I have not heard o it - but you might have?). Yes some of the cost of 'high end' amps is frightening and opening them up often shows that many of them are also PCB these days. Its one reason I like Ceriatone - all P2P boards and affordable generally. Have you tried those?

    • @jeremiahwilson1781
      @jeremiahwilson1781 7 років тому

      tonymckenziecom No I havent. But I got fellow musicians that own a couple and WOW. A real deal hand wired tube amp that a regular fella like me can afford. I been meaning to save my money and try and order one of the 18 watt Marshall circuits. A guy I jam with has the 18 watt tmb Marshall knockoff combo and man that thing is a stinger. Yeah..Ceriatone..ive heard of em. Affordable and built tough.

    I have one, great tweedy tone - the tone controls work fine, I find there's enough treble with a bit of coaxing - the mains hum decreases a bit when it's fully warmed up, maybe half an hour? I wonder how it compares to a Chinese made Juketone Royal 5 Watt head?

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  6 років тому +2

      I don't have either of those amps now... so could not compare. But I really like the Bassbreaker 7w. Well enough made and it can get some really good tones. The internal quality of the Juketone might be not as good... but there again I have seen some Chinese product that is very good internally. Thanks for watchiong.

    I just fixed my 007 today. I thought it was dead, but it turns out that one of the tubes (valves) were just loose. Sort of makes me question the construction quality.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому +1

      Hmmm... I never had any trouble with this one on here, but they are a Mexican made amp (no real negatives inferred except maybe quality control) and they did cram a lot in to what was basically a piece of folded metal for the 007 head. Always check those tubes though and it just shows how easily someone could be led up the path for a loose tube! Good comments and thanks for watching.

    My Bassbreaker 15 could have your Bassbreaker 7 in a fight!
    Nice review mate.
    I love my 15. Nice to have that mid pot though.

      I have decided that it could :) others have commented on the BB15 as being a tidy piece of gear. But the 007 IS a Class A and the BB15 is probably not... so each has its own advantages really. And the 007 was cheap (second user). Anyway I have the secret weapon... XOTIC SL pedal... and the 007 will melt your 15's chassis by breathing fire on it :)
      Thanks for watching.

    Great vid, as always. I love what You do, Tony. Tons of respect. Could You make a review of Joyo Mjolnir as it is cheap and quickly is becoming popular these days? I had bad issue with evh 5153lbx. It should be reviewed as well. Keep on rocking !!!

      JOYO MJOLNIR - i know i know - strange name. It's a nem of the hammer of Thor :-)))
      My problems with 5150III LBX: lots of noise and buzz even with the guitar being not connetcted, muddy when played loud, shrill and thin when played quietly, cheapish pots with crackling noises, and very loud popping from time to time. It was brand new and i sent it back immediately. Very poor quality imho and bad experience. Maybe i got a lemon, but QC should be better.

    Soldiers fuse,! I thought about buying this but this changed my mind.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  5 років тому +1

      Actually I did revisit this regarding the fuse. I was wrong on the 'soldering'. But if you look here: ua-cam.com/video/2vY1eS77fxY/v-deo.htmlm56s if you look really close there are two 'covers that fit over each end of the fuse that you could 'pull off' to change the fuse. However, it's still inside and difficult to reach. Hope it helps.

    I dissagree about it having a fenderish/brittish tone, its about as marshall as it gets. trebble boost on, pushed a little with an MXR dyna Comp and dial in the EQ it sounds like a JCM-800. perfect for recording. huge sounds. think A Perfect circle tone. does have a little too much transformer hum for my liking at low volumes. you need to have it fairly loud for a clean recording.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the info and how you found this amp yourself. It did seem 'fenderish' to me, but I did not push it too hard with external stuff. But all good info for sure and thanks for watching.

    did you not find it dull and muffled tony ? when i tried one it hummed like a bugger and with the treble maxxed it still sounded dull.

    • @Classix1969
      @Classix1969 7 років тому

      in the video your treble control was nearly dimed, a sign of a poorly thought out eq section. some say even the bright switch is still too dark, personally id go for the bb15

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      No there was more than enough treble?

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      Actually I did not show the settings of the amp that were used... maybe on the 'bench' but those were not what I used on the video. Remember there is also that treble button to press which makes a big difference. You are not the first to talk about the BB15 and it's cool features etc. especially for the money. Also remember that the 007 is a Class A amplifier and the BB15 I believe is not (correct me for sure if I am wrong on that - its a guess) so the 007 will sound a bit different than some amps. But treble was not really missing for me... maybe the speakers on the cab you tried it on might have been mismatched or faulty? Just a thought - obviously I could be wrong on that. But good points and it helps other guys with what to look for when they try an 007 out... Thanks for watching.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  6 років тому

      Yes I would say it is... but that could depend on the speaker cab... 2x12 or 4x12 and the ohms range used and the speaker efficiencies should be borne in mind.... good question! Thanks for watching.

    I didn't understand the hype surrounding this line of amps, they all sounded awful to my ears. Seemed to me at the time and now that a lot of punters have serious confirmation bias when it comes to gear. Two ecc83 and a el84 but only 7 watts, despite those beefy looking transformers, suggests this was a set clean and use a pedal amp? The power distortion was so fuzzy and tame I can't see how else you'd use it. Who needs more such amps? Not me. Small heads are supposed to be all about getting power tube tones at reasonable levels, or why bother even using tubes at all and not just do a mosfet design? I'd like to have seen something class A with a kt66 or 6l6 big bottle design, or a el34 based off a couple of ecc83 at about 20w. Something that you set to 11 and then surf the volume controls. Something with balls and character that isn't just totally generic and fizzy.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  4 роки тому

      No hype from me! I don't hype anything - if its good its good and if not? I'll say so! I bought this amp with my own money and tell it as I found it good or bad. I get your comments too - you're right that lower wattage should be lower output for great tones... but not always the case, check the try the PRS MT15 - loud? Ha louder than 15w forever! I'm not entirely convinced about tube amp replication in most forms I could mention. A great tube amp is very hard to replicate and often complexity of the simulator makes the idea pretty useless. A tube amp? well less than 3 minutes and you'll generally have a good tone. This amp under review was a shadow of the recent supersonic 22w heads they made... now those were great Fender amps and these seem very different, but then again these are half the price of what the supersonic 22w head was. Thanks..

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  4 роки тому +1

      @Bandana Dee Isaac Actually I had TWO 007 amps and they were pretty much the same overall... not bad - but also not perfect. The supersonic 22 was awesome but it cost more. Check out something like a Bogner Brixton (hardly seen around these days discontinued) but if you want a really great tube amp tone for probably less than $500 or so then that's a secret weapon for sure. I did sell both my 007's eventually, but because I bought them used I really did not lose money on them - thanks.

  • @RabiBenLavi
    @RabiBenLavi 7 років тому

    I think it's Fender's copy of a Bugera. It's ok, for the price you paid, but over priced with that particle board cabinet instead of plywood. Modern electrics standards prevent them all from making the cheapos they could in the old days. Like the ones with no mains transformers and no ground pin. If plugged in the wrong way, the chassis was hot with US wiring.. So I guess they had to settle for a cheap cabinet.

    • @officialtonymckenzie
      @officialtonymckenzie  7 років тому

      Ouch I did not know they did that in the old stuff. I agree that the list price is off (I think it was about £270 or so here) but the £160 I paid made it worth buying. There is not a lot in there for the money for sure but it was interesting to see what they did. I thought the grey covering was not really 'Fender' as we know it and seemed 'cheap'. Thanks for the info and for watching.

      tonymckenziecom it's a modelling tube amp. It has an ac30 setting which is why I got it. Very nice sound I only use that setting or the tweed 4x10. The onboard effects are really good for an amp fx set up (as far as they go, usually pretty rubbish) got a nice spring and plate reverb. And the overdrive claims to model the Ibanez 808 close but not like the real thing
