Just wanted to come on to say I used a lot of your tips within this video for my interview, and 2 hours later I got the call to say that I was selected for the PhD!! Can't thank you enough :)
@@laurenlane-s5p wow just 2 hours later, that's incredible, congratulations!!! Thank you for coming back to let me know, so kind of you! And so delighted to hear I could help ☺️
These are such nice useful pointers! Thank you! I have a PhD interview coming up where I have to present a paper on predicting cancer survival in colorectal cancer (I have a computer science background only and now trying to enter biotech 😄) and I feel a lot more informed now though still very scared 🤣
Hello, thank you for this video. I have a PhD interview next week and I wanted to make sure I had all I needed in the power point presentation and this really helped. Thanks for your guidance 😊
Salam Hira. How are you? I have applied to Oxbridge for PhD and am so worried about not being accepted. I am a social science student and my MA gpa was 6.1/7 from Australia, not that high. I have no publication, only three and half of years teaching experience. Your videos really helped and encouraged me. I have applied to more than two universities. A PhD is a must in my field and I want to be a better academic. ❤
Nice presentation, what about when you are asked to present your expertise and vision for a project that you are applying for can I use my previous work during my presentation?
Hi, if they are asking for both expertise and a vision for your project, you can make the first part about your previous work and show them what skills/expertise you have. And in the second part you can present your visions, goals, and hypotheses/research plans for the upcoming project. Hope that makes sense.
@@oxford_phd Ok, thank you for your reply, but in my case I am asked to present my expertise and vision for the project I applied for. That means I just present my proposal where I will state how I am going to solve the problem and the expected results?
Great video @Hiya. Learned alot. I have a PhD interview coming up and would have to give a presentation too. Kinda nervous. Don't know if the slides are good to go.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful! If you'd like me to look over your presentation or do a mock interview presentation with me, you can book a one-to-one meeting with me here: www.fiverr.com/share/rGVob0
@@oxford_phd Thank you very much for your response. And may I ask which font have you used? It looks quite nice. In a few days I have an interview for AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) studentship in Modern History at St Andrews. The field is quite different with yours but your video was very promising and helpful as a model.
Thank you so much for the beneficial video! Just. a quick question, did you draw the pictures yourself? If so how did you do this? did you use a program?
Hi! Yes it was on PowerPoint! It's surprising how much you can do on it using the simple shapes. Just pick a nice colour. Add a bit of shadows or 3D structure, and you're good to go. Some parts I think it may have also taken out from figures but probably not. If you do that, probably add "adapted from" and cite the paper.
Thanks for the video and information! I have to ask, did they ask you to present a paper or yoir proposed project? Or a previous one I just need to understand what will they ask of me Anyway, thanks a lot!
Dear Hira, This is Amiya Sur from India, I would like to thank you first for making an in-depth video on Interview presentation (a crucial aspect of phd interviews) However, I also got confused as I followed along the video, if my school have asked me to present on a project proposal, how can I already have results to share with them ? How do I show the graphs and all prior to beginning my phd ?
hey Hira😊 first of all thankyou so much for all this information. I am already expecting an oxford Dphil interview and wanted to prepare ahead of time. I am having trouble understanding this 5 minutes presentation time: would they give me a topic and I have 5 mins to prepare or this 5 min is the presentation time? My other question is: How would I select the project or topic for this 5 min presentation? would I be presenting my previous projects from masters or bachelors or something related to the project I am applying to?
Hi! You will have to present in 5 minutes and you should prepare the slides etc before the interview. The topic should be your research project from masters or bachelors.
Hi Hira. Thank you for the amazing video. I have a question. If I didn't complete my masters yet, but my prospective PhD supervisor told me to prepare a 5min presentation related to my current research work (which is my dissertation). How can I prepare the presentation? Should I only state the background, aim, and expected results?
You will definitely need an introduction, ideally with a schematic drawing (for example from Biorender), purpose/aims of your experiments (or tests), and then have 2-3 slides with relevant data, make sure the slides are neatly composed, ideally using a set template from your university or a self-designed template (the example that Hira gave looks good), and make use of the automated formats built into PowerPoint You should have one slide with the key discussion points, and it will be important to mention also the limitations of your study. The last 30 seconds can put your data/conclusions into a wider context, i.e. how it impacts population health, socio-economics, etc., depending on your subject area.
Very helpful, thank you! Like others in the comments, I am also awaiting to do an interview for a DPhil. Nervous about the presentation because my research was more application-based and it was in a team environment. Any suggestions for how to approach this? (My Master’s was more industry-focused and the project/research was about creating a solution to a problem that occurs in the hospital. And I was one of almost ten team members).
Hey! You could talk about the project in general but focus more on your contribution and what you did to add value to the project. Especially the research aspect to highlight the skills you developed which will be directly applicable to the PhD. Good luck! :)
I have 3 interviews coming up and I'm nervous. My MSci project went so badly and presenting it in a way that actually paints me in a good light is tough. I have to focus quite a lot on the troubleshooting, reflection and evaluation to at least prove that I can problem solve and assess experiment validity. And the worst part is it was an easy project (literally the most basic molecular biology) so I'm terrified that I'll simply be dismissed as incompetent and not trusted to manage 4 years of wet lab work. All my results are basically pictures of gels that don't have the band I actually wanted due to either plasmid contamination or simply poor PCR efficiency due to the primers being crap (something I should've picked up on sooner). I did well in my viva presentation which was essentially a problem diary, but idk how that will go down in an interview.
Hi there! I wouldn't worry! The results are outside your control. The imp thing is you tried your best and did the troubleshooting, critical thinking, problem solving. And poor primers hapoens to everyone and it isn't your fault! Just focus on what you did, what you learnt, and don't be afraid to mention what went wrong because it shows you were able to pinpoint what was causing the problems! This skill is crucial for a PhD actually!
Asslm alkm Hira Today I was having a PhD ppt presentation interview.. As I prepared so much and I really tried very hard but ..I got the mail in afreenoon that I did not get selected... What should I do..I cant tell you my feelings right now.
PhD interview. Usually, you have to present at least one research project that you have been involved among other contents like your CV and motivations. Then, the Q&A session.
If they ask to specifically answer this question in a 5 mint presentation How do your experiences and qualities provide a background to contribute to the research project?
Ma'am I have a doubt if you select a new topic then how you can predict the results and conclusion about your result as you only know it theoretically and the topic which you proposed is a new one so how we conclude the results of something which we ourself is new to us as we say we don't know it prior to the experiment pls clear this doubt ma'am??
