    About Tophs blindness: My gf is mostly deaf without her hearing aids, but even her own father forgets that sometimes. She once told me that he called her all excited, that he got the family a spotify subscription so now she can listen to music on the go. She had to remind him that she can not hear and in fact has no ear canals. So the fact that close friends sometimes forget that someone is disabled is actually quite realistic. Especially if that disability doesn't affect day-to-day life that much.

      On one hand, I see the argument; Toph isn't seriously impeded in some everyday activities that blind people in the real world are. But on the other hand...
      1. She still can't do _all_ everyday activities. She can't read, for one thing. Or navigate a wooden house.
      2. Disability does not just include people who are barely able to function in everyday life. Heck, not everyone who's legally _blind_ is actually _completely_ unable to see. Disability includes people who are just less able to do some things most people take for granted. It's not a binary between "normal people" and people who are, as Xiran put it, incompetent.

So I wasn’t exposed to deaf culture and I don’t really sign and I mostly use other coping mechanisms to communicate. I’m about to get hearing aids. A lot of time when I start talking about being hard of hearing and how it is a disability people try to tell me it’s not because I communicate well. “Who was the snitch that said there was one last waterbender in the south?”
    There’s actually a theory that they were never looking for Katara, they were looking for Hama. They knew she escaped, and they knew she was a bloodbender, which is why they weren’t going to bother taking her prisoner again and set to kill her instead. I definitely believe this too, because it makes more sense than someone just ratting out a little girl that really didn’t pose a threat to begin with

    • @annapmark536
      @annapmark536 3 роки тому +391

      I have a theory about that too.
      In ATLA comic "North and South" we learn that (not to spoil too much) there WERE waterbenders at the South Pole that were living outside of the Tribe so somebody had to teach them. That got me thinking that THAT person was the one that was ratted out. The reason Yon Rha came to the siblings' house? Hakoda is the head of the tribe so it was natural to come there. By pure coincidence Katara, his daughter, is also a waterbender so Kya must have thought they came for her and did the only thing she could do.

      Its heartbreaking honestly. Despite her confident and arrogant front, she always worked really hard to achieve perfection and appease her father and his impossible standards. In the end her friends betray her, her father tossed her aside and her strife for perfection overwhelmed her, causing her to spiral down, resulting in being defeated by the loser of the family and realizing there is no way she can ever rise again. So she finally lets her emotions rule her, something she has never allowed herself, and breaks down in crying, kicking, screaming and total dispair. It was so extremely well done. I read a theory that the reason the Fire Nation "knew" there was one last Southern waterbender was because Hama escaped. So there was this incredibly dangerous waterbender out there that they were trying to catch, and obviously the first place they look is her home country because she might have wanted to return home. So they had no idea that Katara was there, but Kya assumed that they knew about Katara and took her place to be taken prisoner. ehhhh, i still disagree with this. she is not dis-abled. she is, as many say it in the real world, 'differently able'. No, she can't see using her eyes, but we don't call bats disabled for relying on echolocation in the dark. Her seismic sense more than makes up for not having use of her eyes in nigh-on every case, and leaves her far more competent than most who rely on their eyesight in the vast majority of ways that relate to orientation. Lack of ability to recognize ink painting/writing (and even then, that's bullshit because traditional chinese ink is primarily made of ground carbon, so she absolutely should be able to tell it apart from the paper it's drawn on) is absolutely minute compared to her 360 degree perception and complete immunity to light-based disorientation like flash bangs or sudden darkness. Or hell the fact that she can scan people's emotional states regardless of what facial expression they are wearing.
      Fact is, in 99% of instances her blindness is not in the least something she actually has to struggle with or around or even really account for as she goes about her life. She's completely substituted it for her seismic sense and I wouldn't call the narrow ways in which it does not accomplish the same things as photon-based sight a 'disability' compared to all the massive advantages it has over it.

Even if they come in for less than a minute we have to do this. Gotta say good morning/afternoon when you're passing them in the hallway. Teachers think it's super disrespectful to not do it, and get super mad when we don't.

    I think your take on not having mentally ill villains is really interesting! To me, I don't see it as dehumanizing mentally ill people, I see it as humanizing the villains. Knowing that they're like that because of generational trauma or BPD or something really helps me to remember "this villain is a human being. Maybe if their father had treated them better and worked with them on this illness it wouldn't have gotten to this point. We have to love them through their trauma!" It also then helps me to be more understanding towards myself and other people because you never know a person's background. Someone may be super kind because of their trauma and mental illness (like Katara) or super unkind because of their trauma and mental illness (like Azula). I think that the two of them in particular are foils of each other, both ~14yr old girls who lost their mothers and had to deal with their father's lack of acceptance towards them and their own mental health issues. The villain being mentally ill really just shows that the issues aren't as black and white as "this behavior is bad".

    And yes, although students are not required to say the pledge and it is illegal to force them to, it's generally seen as a big no-no. I only ever had one teacher tell us he'd be okay if we didn't say the pledge because it was within our rights.

      It's also connected to the family's long history of violence, particularly towards relatives and, in the case of Roku, close friends. Zuko and Azula's duel COULD have been an epic smackdown, but the showrunners specifically lobbied to get live strings for the heartrending music and the whole thing just reads as tragic. She's literally wearing Fire Lord clothes that are so big they're falling off her when he arrives, because she's *maybe* 15 at this point. Ozai arranged for his own father's death after trying to capitalize on his nephew's tragic demise AND being (facetiously or no) told to murder his own child.
      Zuko refuses to attack Ozai during the Day of Black Sun - even when it comes to redirecting lightning! Compare with The Storm, where when the roles of powerful and powerless were reversed, Ozai maimed a barely-pubescent child for daring to surrender. And Word of God states that Zuko is looking on the defeated Azula with pity at the end of their fight - a fight resolved by Zuko's new friend rather than him committing violence against his own sibling. Iroh and Zuko both take pains to break away from the toxic cycles of violence that have plagued the Fire Nation royal line for so long.

Roku's kids probably took it with them when the island was evacuated. As for how it ended up in Iroh's possession, he might have been suspicious of his father dying and sister in law disappearing at the exact same time without any official comment and conducted an investigation of the town of Hiara where he would have known Ursa to be from. He'd especially be suspicious if he was aware that Ursa had been trained as a master herbalist by her mother and knew a few things about certain untraceable poisons.

    I think what I like about the Southern Raiders the most was the fact it was shown that its okay for Katara not to forgive the man who killed her mother. Like it seems obvious when I say she couldn't forgive that but so many kid's shows go full in on Aang's perspective. But I think its an important message that if you can't forgive someone, that's fine you shouldn't force yourself to do so. I find at least in the culture I grew up in there's a very strong fixation on forgiveness such that it almost seems like if you can't forgive someone there's something wrong with you, when there's not.
    There's also the "you're only hurting yourself" aspect people put onto not forgiving someone which I also find wrong. Forgiveness has never been about making the person who was wronged feel better, its about absolving or at least easing the guilt of the person who wronged them and no one is entitled to that.

    Tbh I never really saw Azula's breakdown as a depiction of mental illness. She wasn't a mentally ill villain, she was a child under a lot of stress and manipulation/abuse (Ozai was not a good father to either of his kids, just because Zuko suffered more obviously doesn't mean Azula wasn't equally mistreated in a different way).
    Azula had a strict worldview: I am strong, I am perfect THEREFORE things go my way. That gets shattered twice, first when Mai and Ty Lee betray her, and then when Ozai reveals that he has no more use for her, tells her to stay put like a good little attack dog, and leaves her alone at home with an empty title. Also you don't have to be diagnosed with a mental disorder to experience delusions or hallucinations. Sometimes stress causes neurons to go haywire for a while, so while those are symptoms, they have to occur in tandem with other symptoms and last for a set amount of time.
    Basically, I didn't think Azula breaking down was a result of "mentally ill people bad". I understand why people think it is, but I just saw it as her reacting to the events around her.

    • @griffinraynor8425
      @griffinraynor8425 3 роки тому +288

      A person under that kind of stress is absolutely going to develop a mental illness. Azula and Zuko both almost certainly have C-PTSD from their abuse and insecure upbringing. Zuko shows signs of this by having frequent breakdowns, having trust issues, and being easily manipulated by Azula and Ozai. Azula doesn't show it as much because she's hardened herself and she's not a POV character, but her breakdown absolutely seems symptomatic of mental illness to me, especially the way it develops.
      I disagree with the idea that Azula shouldn't be portrayed as mentally ill because she's a villain. As somebody who suffered from mental illness and abuse as a child, what I hate much more is seeing antagonistic characters who have been abused and yet are NOT portrayed as mentally ill, because to me that feels like ignoring the consequences of that kind of trauma. Azula SHOULD be mentally ill - she should just also be sympathetic and be allowed to recover.

      "just because Zuko suffered more obviously". How is it obvious? Especially befoe saying that they have been "equally mistreated"? From what I know of the fandom, it's seems to me that people take it as a given that Zuko suffered more than Azula at best, and at worse, some don't even know/recognise that she has been mistreated at all. All of this come down to the fact that he has been the black sheep, humiliated, physically attacked by his father and then banned, and on the opposite, she has always been the favorite (of their FATHER), and never casted out.
      But if you think about it, all of this was actually what saved Zuko and doomed Azula, as it protected him from their psychopatic father all those years plus gave him a replacement for the good influence of their mother with uncle Iroh, while Azula had to STAY with the monster that yeah, favored her SO had to SUFFER from his influence, AND had ZERO good influence/protection as her mother didn't know how to handle her and she didn't have Iroh.
      So basically I think that it's the opposite, Azula had it harder than Zuko as he had a chance to redemption with emotional safety and love to counter balance his father abuse, while Azula had none and has been stuck with this tyrant all her life. And him favorying her WASN'T actually a favor at all, as it wasn't love nor emotional safety! It was just his sick/power hungry and manipulative game with a little then teenage girl.

      @TwoOne OneZero I appreciate the sentiment that mental illness is usually long-lived and not something people can 'get over' or stop suffering from completely. That's absolutely true.
      However, when we talk about recovery in mental health, we generally mean getting better then your worst state in your condition, and/or learning to cope with and manage the mental illness in an ongoing basis. We often talk about recovery as a process, in the same way people do with addiction - the problem may never go away, but you can get better and better at dealing with it, and when you relapse you can work to get better to a more stable state.
      Azula may well have a sociopathic disorder, but I'd caution against characterizing sociopathy as primarily violence and aggression. While from my understanding those are symptoms, I also understand it to be about a difficulty empathizing or sympathizing with other people, which can make violence more common in some due to not having a warning system based on other people's feelings or reactions. However people with low empathy are fully capable of being good and nonviolent people. My trying to point out Azula's mental illness comes with a huge disclaimer of not wanting to excuse or explain all of her violence as a part of that, to the point of potentially perpetuating stereotypes about real mental illnesses.
      Admittedly there's a lot I don't know about mental disorders outside my own, but I haven't had any reason to believe that any of them are beyond possibility of coping with. People ending up in jail or unhealthy mental facilities is a fault of neither them nor their disorder, but of society - it's a failure to take care of them and offer them the best opportunity to take care of themselves. I don't really think anybody's beyond help if we really genuinely give them a chance, and they take it. I understand that people getting thrown in shitty facilities or otherwise getting left behind does absolutely happen all the time, but the way you're phrasing it seems to make it more about how severely mentally ill they are and not the lack of care available to them, which I don't believe is right.

    Hallucinations are not automatically linked to mental illness though. Severe exhaustion and/or stress can also make you hallucinate.
    I don't think that Azula's hallucinations are vilifying mental illness. She is however severely stressed and I can't imagine her eating or sleeping well since Mai and Ty Lee left her. Her entire worldview was shaken by this one act of defiance and she clearly doesn't take it well. Hallucinating in such a vulnerable and highly emotional state is not necessarily connected to mental illness.
    I also feel like its wrong to armchair-diagnose fictional characters with mental illnesses that aren't addressed in universe. It makes us unconsciously project our perception of that character on the specific mental illness we suspect them to have and that's harmful too.
    I won't deny that Azula becomes very unstable but that does not necessarily mean that she has a mental illness.

The other theory is that she was trying to give an "out" to someone she perceived to be a kind yet helpless old man.

    I'm not sure how messenger hawks work in Avatar, but real messenger birds worked by returning to the mail posts they were taken from, since the bird's instincts were to return back to its nest or home. This system allowed you to send a message back a fixed location, and presumably they would use a bird that was taken from the next location down the chain, continuing until your message reached its destination.

      Meh. PTSD being suffered by the hero and being shown as not violent is pretty common and shows up in some of the most prominent stories in media. Harry Potter has it, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta have it, Buffy has it, Frodo is heavily implied to have it before it was even a diagnosis and it was just referred to as shell shock...
      Honestly when we talk about needing representation for more mentally ill characters who aren’t violent, you can’t just use any mental illness and say it is an example of this. We need mental illnesses where many people actually think that most people with that illness are violent - like illnesses with psychotic episodes such as schizophrenia and bipolar or something like dissociative identity disorder or personality disorders like BPD and NPD. Azula doesn’t have PTSD or depression, she has bipolar type 1 or schizophrenia. Her violence is linked to the fact that she suffers from psychosis.
      Bring me a character with psychosis who isn’t aggressively violent and then I’ll call that good representation.

      @@quadling3521 That’s one of the reasons why I was upset at the Ant-Man films sidelining Hank Pym so much. In the comics, he has bipolar. Opinions vary on if that counts as good representation or not, but it’s something the movies could’ve done right if they wanted to instead of sweeping it under the rug.
      But now I want a superhero team who all explicitly have various mental illnesses but their powers have nothing to do with said disabilities.

    My theory for why Zuko and Iroh didn't go for Ozai themselves was because they realized that to the outside world, it would seem like them usurping power for themselves. Heck, this even goes back to Zuko in the first episode. He shows up, destroys the villages fortifications in seconds and then takes out Sokka in one hit - and then he gets hit in the back of the head with the boomerang to present to the audience that he is still vulnerable.

    I actually like how they made Azula have a mental breakdown in the last two episodes. Her breakdown was actually two seasons in the making, or 14 years in the making for her, and given the messed up family dynamic she and Zuko have with their parents, it was only a matter of time before she snapped.
    Although I do agree that there should be more heroes who are mentally ill and who are not dangerous so that mental illness doesn’t have to be demonized.
    I highly recommend you watch the Azula Analysis done by Hello Future Me, if you have an hour to spare. It’s very educational and it explains clearly why she had her breakdown and where her mental illness came from.

    • @Soroboruo
      @Soroboruo 3 роки тому +21

      Honestly if you discount the comics (which i personally take as "optional canon") there's no further indication that Azula is hallucinating like she did with seeing her mom, and as other people have mentioned, she was under so much stress and dealing with abuse that mental health problems were basically inevitable. So yeah, 'breakdown' feels more accurate. Plus what made her a villain wasn't the mental illness but the *source* of it - Ozai's rules and expectations, growing up in a truly unbearable, absurdly stressful environment with impossible expectations heaped on her, plus far less experience with recovering from failure and mistakes than Zuko did.
      I do wish she'd gotten a proper recovery arc though.
