  • Picked up my Honda Acty at port Freeport, TX.
    Allot of first time here.
    First time importing.
    First time towing a trailer.
    First time hauling a truck.
    First time right hand drive.
First time picking up at the port.
    First time for everything.
I wanted to try importing a vehicle and I have learned allot.

My Hijet left Puerto Rico a couple of days ago and is halfway to Jacksonville Florida. It's a little over a week away from the port of entry, Newport News Virginia. The three month wait is almost over. I'm making lists and plans for the 18 hour round trip to get the little kei truck. I'm charging my jump box. I've spent the last three months buying a small mountain of tools and accessories and supplies for the little truck. Thanks for your video. I hope my port experience is as trouble free as yours.

@@mistertyspy - As a first time importer, I don't know what I don't know. I did a ton of online research and still somehow managed to overlook the need to file the ISF form with US Customs and Border Patrol no later than 24 hours before my truck left Yokohama. I filed when it was halfway across the Pacific Ocean. In theory, Customs can assess a $5000 late filing fee. I sent a mea culpa message to CBP but haven't heard anything. I hope there isn't a nasty surprise awaiting me at the port. :-o
I also still don't know what forms my local DMV needs to register and license the truck in my state so I can drive it on the road. They're being vague about it, so I don't know which forms to get at the port, and apparently some of them need stamps or signatures. I need to figure that out tomorrow.
I can see why many people get into the business of importing, repairing, upgrading and selling mini trucks. They're cute, easy to work on, they're rare and highly valued here in the US, and once the treacherous importation process is figured out for the first truck it's a lot easier after that.

@@Letsfightinglov - I purchased my 1996 4WD Hijet on 8SEP22, it shipped two months later and spent a month on the ocean. I drove to Newport News Marine terminal and picked up my Hijet on 8DEC22. It had a blown clutch so I winched it onto the trailer and drove home, eleven hours away. I ordered clutch parts from Japan. Actually, I had the clutch disk, pressure plate and throw out bearing in two days from Amazon, but I wanted to replace the rear main oil seal on the engine and the pilot bearing at the same time so those parts were apparently only available from Japan. I placed orders with Impex... orders plural because they allow you to order and pay for parts, then tell you those parts are discontinued, so you need to order aftermarket compatible parts. Eventually, some version of the parts you want should be available. Over a month later, I'm still waiting for the clutch disk, and it should be close to shipping. Then they charge me ~$50 for one week FedEx shipping. I've been doing overdue maintenance, repairs and upgrades while waiting for the clutch parts. I have a Hijet Restoration thread on Mini Truck Talk forum if you're interested. I'm taking pictures and video to hopefully upload to UA-cam but I've been procrastinating.

In AZ I have a few ranch properties and tinyhouse communities so I enjoy using, but in places like az, you can drive hijet, acky, samby, etc everywhere except freeway and highway. Many people actually have kei trucks there! We also have a few tinyhouse communes in tn as well, where nearly every resident we have jumped on the kei truck or van wagon as was better for errands and daily commute vs their larger vehicles! I just get so much utility of use with my kei trucks, while I have f550s 5500 rams, jeeps broncos etc. Something about small jimny as a daily vs even the bronco or jeep, the fact its uncommon. Same with my hijets, just not common.
Im often out on spread in tx, to wyoming, have my rifle and just hunt or am camping with animals.
My daughter has her own ranch and just got a 2022 hijet jumbo she uses all around her prop. Her ranch and 2 farms supply her restaurants and food trucks. Thai, Viet, Lao, and Filipino food. She raises goat, chicken, fish, etc. Her trucks are all big as she hauls project hot rods and imports, she also uses for cattle and horses. But tbh I know she loves using her kei truck. When she lived in japan with our other family she worked atvour wagyu fac, and she daily drove an old suzuki and old daihatsu when she lived over there. She then built a s15 silvia with a supra 2jz for speed, and honda k24 turbo 86 corolla for drifting. She uses her hijet more then her ram or superduty, more then her jeep or tacoma haha.
My sons waiting on his kei truck subie to arrive. He drives a sti and a forester!

My 1996 4WD Hijet with HI/LO transfer case still hasn't shipped even though I paid for it three weeks ago, so it'll be more than a month before I'm at the port in Newport News to bring it home. I hope my port process is a pain free as yours. Others report horror stories of long waits, come back tomorrow, failed USDA inspections, and zees papers are not in order!
I'd love to have a 4WD kei van. Great little people movers and grocery getters, and yank out the back seats and drop in a homemade bed module and sink module, both with storage, and it'd be a great little camper van. Add a lift and larger tires on a model with a low range and preferably a diff locker and it's a cheap but good overland vehicle. I *REALLY* wish we didn't have protectionist laws in the US and could import cars newer than 25 years old for use on the road.

Just make sure you have all the import paperwork down and you should be fine. You'll need safety inspection and vin inspection once it's here. Once you have all your documents than you can get it titled and registered. This was my first time importing so I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions. My recommendation is if it's within your budget than purchase one that is already has title in that states. Save much more time and stress. The truck needs to be registered and that's usually done in your own county. For anything that isn't a transfer, most states require an inspection, mostly to confirm it isn't stolen. Registering an imported Japanese mini truck can be a huge hassle, depending on how officious your local DMV is. Also, these kei trucks aren't good for long highway miles. They're best for around town and back roads. Top speed is often 55 MPH although some will do 75 or so on flat terrain. It's also a bit sketchy to buy a 25+ year old used truck sight unseen from a Japanese website, put it on a boat for a month, and plan on driving it hundreds of miles right off the boat.
