i wind my skeins into cakes mostly for the GLORIOUS center pull, but also because they’re neater and more compact for storage i also mentioned in another comment that when i get low on a certain skein i put it into a plastic bag so it doesn’t get everywhere. and then when im working with it i just open the bag partially and pull the tail end through so it stays neat even while im working
I usually don’t wind my yarn into cakes. I usually just keep my projects in their own bag, and leave the tangle of yarn at the bottom and unravel as needed. But when I do cake, it’s because of many reasons. Mainly, I cake if I’m joining yarns myself. I like to mix and match different types of yarn for my projects, and caking them together as one yarn 🧶 is easier than trying to wrangle two (or more!!) bouncy baby floof balls. Also, I will cake yarn if it’s either a really difficult texture (hello, chenille) or if I buy a skein that doesn’t offer a center pull (why do companies even offer it like this 😭). Oh, or if it’s sock yarn. :3 My cotton yarn for my cable knit sweater is caked. My acrylic yarn for my first attempt at a raglan sweater is not. My merino yarn came in a nice, center pull skein so they’re fine. My chenille yarn from the dollar store is not center pull, so on the winder you go. I’ve never seen an electric winder!! My boyfriend bought me a nice wooden one recently, much better quality than the plastic ones (I’ve already broke one hehe), but I love the battery operated one. Especially since it doesn’t have a cord to get your yarn wrapped in!
With my Bernat Blanket Yarn I have my husband help me.😂😂 He's not real thrilled about it. I help him with stuff I'm not thrilled about. Marriage is a give & take! 32 years now... ❤
marriage is a partnership. Neither parties should be thinking about anything but the love they have for each other, not about what they get from each other.
i found that exact yarn winder at a discount store for $4! i will say that in my opinion, my $20 hand crank one is a lot easier to use and makes tighter cakes than the $40 on Amazon electric one 👍
Omg that’s amazing!!! Wish I had found one that cheap haha I’ve heard that before with the hand cranks! I haven’t tried them before! I mainly chose this one because of my pink aesthetic and also because I could actually find reviews that showed me that it also worked with blanket yarn!
Yes! Whenever I untangle is it is a mind numbing task (in a good way) and I just watch tv or yt while doing it. I haven’t been knitting as much but now I’m gonna start a project back up because this video reminded me of it (sorry about the whole tangent lol)
I love yarn blobs...idk why Also, when my yarn starts looking tangled, I pick up the string and kinda just wave it around a bit - usually the yarn just realizes it craves personal space and then you're all good
i got a cheap hand cranked winder on amazon 10 yrs ago still works great!! still pretty fast and gives a arm workout if you do a lot in one sitting , but less arm strain than hand winding❤
Put some velcro strip's on the bottom . And a strip on the table so it will stay in place when you use it. Remove the winder and put it away when not on use. Ready to use when you want to use the winder again. Simple fix for wobbly.
Yarn cakes and those wooden spinning yarn holders are my go to combo. Not only can you work through an entire ball of yarn without any tangles, but you don't have to stop and pull yarn free every few seconds
Personally I love to wrap my yarn by hand it’s really satisfying and calming EDIT: Not to be that guy, but I’ve never had 100 likes on my comment before!
Same!!!! Also, I know how to wind center-pull balls by hand and know that most skeins are wound so you pull from the center. Somehow, I don’t think she’s doing/ knows this.
It’s a beautiful show and I’m looking forward to you guys watching it. I find it hits better when you are emotionally open to understanding the characters and I think you both will get a lot from it.❤
idk... its preference, but i find it more satifying winding it myself. I'm still going to have to sit there with an electric one and watch it, might as well do something with my hands.
Considering knitting crocheting etc is already hard for older ppl or ppl with arthritis or raynauds, some of us have to spare our hands in any way we can.
@whatever3145 Yea, I can totally see that. I have carpal tunnel, not so severe, I can still do some stuff, but there are somethings I'd rather get some help on.
You need a swift at the point your tangles were at. And a stocking or old pantyhose over a manufactured skein can keep it contained through your project, just put it on at the beginning.
Been thinking about getting one of these too. My hands are getting worse and it's just so much better anyway, than many hand rolled ones. Good for leftover yarn or yes when it's a puddle. I'm gonna make some yarn cozies/yarn huggers tho, trying to prevent that tangled puddle. Last time I crocheted a shawl, I used like 5 hours with my mom, so 2 persons, to detangle and had to cut a couple of places cause it was a mess. 😬
I just ordered this one from UK Amazon, thanks to your video, so I hope it works ok! I’ve been using a simple winder from the 1960’s but skeins today, are so tangled inside that you need improved models and a whole load of patience to complete the cake! I buy 100g skeins so I need a larger winder and this looks perfect!
i wind new skeins into cakes and when they start to get all loose and tangly like that i just put them in a ziploc bag and it keeps it less messy storage-wise and just in general
I like winding into a ball by hand BECAUSE it takes so long, and even when I borrowed my aunt's winder, I liked that it was manual and had a crank 😂 I didn't think electric yarn cake winders were a thing bc I thought it was part of the fun
I bought this electric winder and returned it after attempting 3 different types of yarn. After about 30 tries, I finally had 3 cakes. It was awful, I would not reccommend. I am looking for a hand crank large enough to do at least half of a skein of blanket yarn now.
I know this is kinda random but i just discovered yarn bowls and there super helpful! I would recommend getting one since they help with making sure your yarn doesn't knot and they come in a lot of different sizes
Colanders that have round holes work great as yarn bowls. Also just about anything can be turned into a yarn bowl and using a binder clip as the guide for the yarn works too. 🙂🐈🐈⬛💖🌈
@@themaryjay I also have used big ramen bowls as a yarn bowl before, some have the hole for chopsticks that works for thinner yarn but otherwise i find I don't need the hole so much, just having it in the bowl helps keep it from going everywhere.
I have a swift (to deal with hanks and skeins) and a hand-crank winder and it is my dynamic duo! It’s so satisfying to make a yarn cake, especially with gradient yarn. I keep all my cakes on a pegboard wall because of it were all in bags in storage I would forget about them.
I’ve been using a manual ball winder for a few years now because I like the center pull and I don’t like being suprised with yarn blobs or random knots in a pull skein. I use the zip lock bags too, mainly because I like to carry yarn with me when I’m riding shotgun or know I’ll have a long wait where I’m going.
I got a yarn winder because I started buying yarn in hanks and I did NOT want to wind that up by hand, so now I can happily spend a couple hours on a weekend winding yarn for future projects while watching something.
If you're winding a lit of yarn/wool, the cake may be bigger than the circle piece. I found that using a piece of cardboard cut into a larger circle "doughnut" helps. It also stops the yarn getting caught in the gear underneath.
I ALWAYS roll my skeins into a ball before I start. It doesn’t take long, it’s relaxing, and it saves big headaches from the skein loosening and getting tangled.
I just use a stick and wind it by hand over the stick. I have a manual yarn winder, but I tend to prefer more tension in my yarn balls and cakes for space and it just leaves it way too loose for me. But maybe I just didn’t experiment enough before going back to my tried and true method of using a big stick from a long gone wicker basket
Nah. Hand-winding the yarn is my favorite part...so much so that I actually do it before I even start crocheting! All new skeins immediately get hand-wound into a giant ball.
Trick for using yarn cakes. Take the yarn from the centre of the cake to work with. Faster to work with, no snags, tangles or yarn ball skitting around the floors or knocking the yarn bowl over.
I took a small board and a medium C clamp and clamped my Royal (no longer available) yarn winder to it. This way I can move it to different locations if I want to,it mostly stays at the end of my desk. 🙂🐈🐈⬛💖🌈
I clicked on this video thinking it was about making pasta. Then I read "cakes", and I was waiting to see how she makes some kind of cakes from yarn. Then I learnt a new expression: yarn cake 🎉

Do you have any issues with the yarn bumping off the shape? Like it doesn't grip with the rest of the shape and slips down around the base or just falls off and tangles? I use an older hand crank that has this problem at certain times and I have not found a solution. I'm wary of an electric one as I really need the ability to control the speed and strength. Also when I let it do it mostly alone the cakes end up really loose and fall apart easily. I prefer mine where I can chuck them across the room without them falling apart. I'm clumsy and I have a toddler that loves my yarn (willingly shared with him) and having them fall over is frequent. I've had one or two smaller ones just explode on me. So annoying ~_~ Tho I will say nothing tangles like Truboo, a bamboo rayon yarn. It's gorgeous and silky soft but oh my word does it tangle like no one's business.
I often have both cake and crochet videos in my recommendations. I had no idea which way the term yarn cake was going to go until I watched wwww~ I've never seen or heard anyone call yarn rolls/balls cakes before!
haha I think it's the way that it's winded that makes it a cake! A ball is usually a more round shape, a skein is the oval kind, and a hank is the twisty kind!

"Enema yarn"
😂
Out of all the yarn winders I have tried, the very best one, is my husband. Sorry ladies, he’s not for rent.
What kind of yarn do you use? It looks so fluffy and I would like to try it for myself!
